Sorry to hear that. I've had no more trouble with the refurb replacements I've gotten from VZW than I had with the brand new phones. Got a refurb Fascinate to replace the original (refurb was flawless till it got wet) and a refurb Charge to replace the original (refurb is flawless). Not questioning your experience, just saying not everyone has these problems.
I do think that those users who root their phones or delve into Samsung's "hidden menus" are more likely to have phone troubles than those of us who remain stock.

My old phone (a windows mobile 6.1-6.5) became a lot better with custom ROMs, but I was honestly sick and tired of having to upload them and do this and that to make it the way I wanted. I jumped to an android device and was dead set on staying stock. After fighting with Verizon for 2 months, I decided I'd try the custom ROM game again. Thankfully the ROMs have made the phone better in most cases, but there are still things that bug me (really the only thing now that I have 2.3.6 is the static in calls and it seems to drop data connection a lot more than the previous GB radios - I may be loading the EP1W radio back on to see if the data stays on better). But once I swapped to a custom ROM the data dropping was almost non-existant in comparison, and I never had an issue with it not letting me make a phone call.
The hidden menu's have almost always been an issue regardless of what phone you get. There are only a couple of settings that I've ever cared to modify and one of the settings was in the old WM6.5 days where I could allow a phone call to interrupt the tethering.
Modifying voltages, overclocking, bouncing different towers, and whatever else people do is beyond what I even care to try.
Been doing some reading up and I'm really hoping that the Galaxy Nexus works out well for people. I'm not a fan of Samsung at this point, but reports are saying that it's going to be just like the OG droid. Completely stock and updated directly from android rather than having to deal with Verizon and their bloatware, etc. If that's the case, it should turn out great. Vanilla android seems to be the absolute best route to go, I wish that CM7 was on this phone for that reason.

I'm on EP4P, humble version. I'm guessing you are only on the stock leak by mentioning the version.
I did run the stock EP4P for a few hours, no problems whatsoever. In fact, other people have resounded my comments.... switching from cell to wifi to cell is almost seamless, where on other rom/radios, it would take forever.
Not so sure that EP1W will help.
Also have you read the notes to NOT use conservative (stock) and set min cpu speed to 200. Everyone I've setup that way has not had data drops and they haven't had the "popping/static" on voice calls. Not so sure this is a fix, rather a band-aid, but it appears to work. Probably a combination of reiser file system that samsung chose and trying to squeeze the best battery life out at the expense of a few operational issues.
Regardless, VZW should update this thing stat. Rumor has it that VZW has been rejecting the new roms submitted by samsung.

I ran the deodexed/debloated stock rom for a day and then yesterday I uploaded the HumbleROM RC2. I had never tried the min-clock, but since trying it I havent had the static in calls (but i've only called 2 people since, so I'm hesitant to say it's completely resolved at this point if you know what I mean). Quick question, is there a program that doesnt cost that will setup your min-clock to 200? I have Tegrak, but every time the phone re-boots it sets the clock cycle back to 100
I'm just cheap and dont want to pay the $2 to have it auto load every startup.The data dropping has been very weird. I never use wi-fi, no real need to switch between the 2. It's not as bad as stock was, but I'm still randomly not getting any data, even though it says I'm connected to 4G. :S Wasnt having that issue with the EP1W radio, so I'll probably just try it, worst case scenario I'll have to put back on EP4P.
Wonder why Verizon would be/has been rejecting ROMS. You'd think that it would only help them. If they are rejecting them, that's some shrewd business, they realize something is wrong that needs to be fixed and they're basically forcing people to buy new phones. :its a mystery:

Hey i need help figuring ot this phone, bad. I am not in the least bit a tech guy. I bought it at Radio shack because of the price and the sales guy had one and said it was the best thing since sliced bread... Well, in two days of playing around on it thinking i knew what i was doing, it crashed and had to have verizon complety wipe it clean. Now the internet goes dormit at random times, screen shalls or goes black, changes settings by itself, head phone jack quits and will drain my extended battery in an hour with no apps running. What do i do? Please someone help me. I am starting to hate ever buying a smart phone.

Random internet dropping and screen lockups are expected from this phone in stock form, but the rest of the issues you're experiencing sound like major issues. Replacement time

Ah... Cross foruming as well eh
I'm gonna try that route and see what I can do, hopefully things will be resolved. I've tried this same thing before (but only got morons in customer service) This mess has been going on for quite some time
