Droid charge through USB

So I started having this problem and I have two suggestions.

Try a different cord, it's possible for them to get damaged and create a short.

And, this worked for my Bionic, it would not charge properly from the USB3 ports on my computer it would start and then the charge would stop but it was still recognized by the computer. I moved it to USB2(or 2.1 whatever) and it is fine.
Not sure if that is the USB controller or the actual USB3 spec, but something to consider.

Hello there. I've read somewhere that a laptop can still charge a usb device, in my case an Android phone, even when the laptop is off but connected to a wall socket. Anyone heard about it or even tried it ? As for charging time it takes around 4 hours to fully charge my Samsung GTI5500 but then the battery doesn't last as long as if it was charged with the adaptor.

My ASUS motherboard has bios option for this. It's a desktop, but I imagine that option might exist on other system. It's just a bios setting that allows the USB port to be powered even when the computer is off.

My Casio Commando doesn't seem to be charging via the USB port on my laptop either. The red light doesn't come on, nor do I see the battery icon on the top of the screen indicate that the battery is charging. I do have the USB selected to "Charge Only". When I first plugged my phone and cable in to the USB port, I got a message on the laptop that a new device had been plugged in, but could not be installed. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

If the drivers never installed, it may not be able to charge your device. Laptops can be finicky in that they will attempt to shut off the USB ports to save power (even when plugged in) if there is no active connection in the port.

Try getting the drivers to install correctly and see if that helps.

If I'm understanding this correctly, then it should be possible to come up with a male-to-female USB adapter to do this? It passes the power through on pins 1 and 4 and leaves 2 and 3 empty on the hub side and shorts 2 and 3 on the device side?

Code:
[FONT=Courier New]        Adapter
     1 --------- 1
Hub 2 --o |--- 2 Standard data cable
     3 --o |--- 3
     4 --------- 4[/FONT]

Does that look correct?

Sure wish someone would produce something like this. I'd probably buy a dozen of them. I like using cheap hubs as charging stations. The relatively thin USB cables and very thin 5v wires of other devices are a lot easier to wrangle than a/c adapters plugged into in power strips and extension cords.

And a couple more searches in Google and I found some. They're a little more expensive than I was hoping for, but the packaging is just about exactly what I had in mind. I'm going to order a couple, one for my Epic and one for my girlfriend's iPhone, and see how they work. I'll report back here.

Edit: Looks like my link was removed from my message. I meant to point at Amazon. The product is iXP1. They're currently about $5 apiece.

This might help some of you, if you have a protective gel on your phone, remove it when charging. In my case at least it didn't go in all the way but still said it was charging. I removed the gel and that fixed the problem. USB and car charger were having the same problem. :D

And... It didn't work for me.

I tried it on a $3 7-port hub I bought off Amazon. I happened to notice that the power supply to the hub is only 1.0 amp. Therefore, when I plugged in both my Epic and my girlfriend's iPhone, they were probably pulling more than the power supply was providing.

With both plugged in, the iPhone was switching in and out of charge mode constantly. I unplugged the iPhone and left mine plugged in all night. It indicated that it was in charge mode. But, in the morning, it had about the same charge that I remember from the night before. Maybe 5% more.

Possibly, with a more expensive hub, it can provide the power necessary to charge multiple smartphones. But then it's starting to get a little expensive.

So, that sounds like another business opportunity. An inexpensive charging station that can provide the full .5 amp to several USB receptacles.

I've found that charging my HTC Sensation on my Samsung laptop that if I use a regular USB cable, I get the the same slow charge on both my USB 2 and USB 3 ports. The interesting thing is when I use a USB cable with no data bus just a charger cord, I still get a slow charge on my USB 2.0 but on my USB 3.0 port I get a much faster charge.

I hate to raise the dead lol but
i just got a Droid and IMMEDITLY have charging woes.
I left it plugged into my PC all night, with the Droid off. (abt 8 hours)
turned it on in the morning, and it actually reported LESS battery life then it had when i went to sleep. what gives? should i cry now? i sort of have a bad USB cable but it should still work fine for power, unless data does send through to the PC somehow. someone needs to write up some information on the way the Droid charges.

i tried plugging it into my (Unofficial) Wall charger, but that caused the touch screen to stop working (Weird?) so i figured leaving it plugged in that way may damage the phone?

i have the samsung vitality with gingerbread and so far love it!

i had the same issue with it taking forever to charge through a usb port on my laptop. however, i turned on usb storage with it plugged in and noticed a dramatic increase in charging performance. i just did this so i cant put a charge time on it yet but ill post an update later.
