Help DROID Incredible random restart/reboot problem

Simply put, I thought it was a heat problem too. But, once when it was doing the death-loop, I left the phone off for about an hour. Plenty of time for it to cool down. It started up fine, but after about a minute or two, it rebooted again. The phone was not hot at all to the touch. Due to my own personal experience, I'm calling the heat theory busted. Sorry.

Problem Solved - Freeze it

Hopefully this post will help people out, but before I begin, I would like to offer some background information...

  • I would just like to say that i've owned this phone since this very first day it came out
  • I am now currently on my third HTC Incredible
  • I have always been a fan of this phone other than this very specific instance for all the reasons that are advertised (lets be honest... its a pretty awesome phone)
  • I am not an HTC employee nor do I work for any other phone related organization
  • I'm creating this post simply because I do have some legitimate concerns for the safety of people who own it and are having the same problem

When the problem begins...

Like most of the people on this forum you've probably been wondering why your phone keeps randomly restarting itself. Sometimes it'll happen when you're using Google Maps w/GPS, using moving backgrounds, downloading random content (videos, streaming music etc.) or perhaps you're just charging your phone or simply talking on it...

What the reaction is...

So it becomes incredibly frustrating (no pun intended) when you're trying to do something useful and your phone all of a sudden decides to do a "death-loop" cycle (as i've come to call it) ...rendering your phone useless for a set period of time (minutes, hours, or an entire day in my case). The phone shuts down, restarts, shuts down, restarts... etc. You try holding down the power, restarting it, doing a hard reset and even taking out the battery in the hopes that it'll solve the issue. And as almost everyone in this forum has noted... it doesn't really help.

What the problem is...

The problem is really quite simple. Your very very powerful totally awesome phone is doing waaaaay too much mult-tasking and processing to the point that it begins to overheat and becomes unstable. Much like a regular computer... it crashes, restarts, and will continue to do so until environmental conditions for the components change. If you've ever seen a laptop become clogged with dust and overheat you'll notice it does the same thing to the point where it wont even boot up anymore (most likely due to a fried motherboard).

How you can test this theory...

Multi-task it! Turn on wi-fi, gps, play videos, and literally anything else under the sun until the phone begins to overheat and crashes. On brand new phones (out of the box... not refurbs) this usually wont cause an issue right away, but I guarantee that on a long enough timeline... this will inevitably lead to a system/hardware crash and will perminantly cause irreperable damage to phone and increase the probability that such events occur.
Put it in the sun. Yes, believe it or not... you can even cause a death-loop cycle by leaving it on your dashboard while driving or even taking it to the beach and leaving it out in direct sun-light (usually longer than 10 minutes). My first perfect recipe for disaster occurred when I was driving to school (45 minute long drive to Santa Monica) and i had the phone resting on the dashboard while playing Pandora radio and charging at the same time. The phones starting restarting, was noticeably hot to the touch, and didn't get out of the "deathloop cycle" for about 20 straight hours. Why did it keep going in the death loop cycle up for 20 straight hours...? I'll explain this next.

Newtons First Law of Overheating

An HTC Incredible in a deathloop cycle will remain in a deathloop cycle until acted upon by an outside force. Upon observation and taking some notes it appears that once a "deathloop cycle" starts it will remain in the deathloop cycle until the environmental conditions change. This means that your phone will continue to restart until it cools down.
"So why does it keep restarting, shoudn't that help?", you ask? Well, a restart actually causes the phone to do quite a bit of "work" and therefore releases a significant amount of energy similar to the conditions that caused it to restart in the first place. So instead of the "habitual restarting" actually solving the problem... it actually makes it worse by having a resonance like effect.

How you can fix it...

Quite frankly... you can't fix it. But what you can do to minimize the symptoms or to prevent a deathloop cycle is to stick your phone in the fridge or freezer until it cools down enough to become operationally stable. I say again... THIS WILL NOT FIX THE PROBLEM... but will at least make your phone usable for a short period of time (until it reheats again). And yes, I do feel rather stupid for having been over at a friends house (who just so happens to own an iPhone) and tell him that I need to use his fridge to cool down my phone so i can use it.

What Verizon will tell you...

"We've never come across that problem before" is I'm sure the statement you've heard most often from Verizon employees. The truth to the matter is that they are all trained to say this because they have to be cognitively aware that other customers in the store might overhear you complaining and decide not to buy the phone. Likewise, I know this is true because its a theory i've tried and tested...
The first time I had a problem I brought my phone into the Verizon store and a guy (lets call him "Brad") said he had never heard of the problem (Keep in mind he also owns the same phone and is most likely legitimately curious about the problem). We went through the motions, ordered a new phone, and I was on my way. 2 months later... i bring it back to the same guy and again he states "Never heard of the problem".
Unless he's had a mild stroke and checking my customer record does ring a bell... he's completely lying to me.Very very poor decision...

Remember the Recall Formula

Take the number of phones consumers have in the field, (A), and multiply it by the probable rate of failure, (B), then multiply the result by the average out-of-court settlement, (C).
(A) times (B) times (C) = (X) ...

If X is less than the cost of a recall, Verizon or HTC won't do one!
...in short, this deniability is all about money and Verizon/HTC will never come out with a recall or fix because quite frankly its too costly to their profit margins. Remember... they're a business and not the Red Cross.

Why this problem can feasible become dangerous and potentially life-threatening

Because I don't work for HTC i'm not entirely sure if they've been slapped with a lawsuit yet but I can guarantee that one is coming right around the corner (possibly even from myself). Believe me... there's a mountain of documented evidence on those Verizon systems and its only gonna get worse. But here's are a couple more observations...
The external temp of the phone, while on a deathloop cycle, can overheat in excess of 140 degrees (god knows what the internal temp is), which can be almost unbearable to the touch and will continue to sustain these excessive temperatures until you take the battery out. If you're not smart enough to do that (which I wasn't because I couldn't figure out how to get the cover off) this may inevitably cause internal combusion and can potentially start a fire. Leave it in a car, your house, or any other medium in direct sun-light while multitasking and I guarantee you're gonna have a major problem.
Verizon also can't claim they never heard of this problem because I brought it in to their store the other day and an employee also noted how "hot" the phone was. I made a side-joke and brushed it off, but did note that this was something they should seriously look into as it could potentially be dangerous.

Last thoughts

I really hope HTC looks into this problem and if anyone is willing to start a class action lawsuit, please let me know. I would be happy to construct a website (i'm a web developer) and begin an online petition for the recall or fixing of these devices. I honestly can't stand it when companies try to brush this off as if its nothing and then end up burning someones house down (literally).

I hope this has helped everyone who reads it and please be careful when using your device.

Dumbest post on the internet right here.

Why am i able to multitask like a crazy person and get crazy temps without the first flaw?
Just this summer i went on a road trip, had the phone plugged into a charger, in sunlight, using navigation, wireless tethering to 2 devices, and listining to pandora while sending it to my headunit through bluetooth. Phone acted like a champ and still does.

What i would really suggest you guys do that are having trouble with random restarts is get an atrackdog list and post them. I bet there is an app that you are all using that the incredible dont like.
My brother had installed an app on his phone once and as soon as it would boot up the screen wouldnt let you do anything. The phone was garbage untill we went in through adb and fixed the phone.

Sigh, mine started to reset itself last week. Now it resets at LEAST TWICE a day! I don't know why. It is not getting hot. Usually it is when I text/am getting a text. Handcent must be screwed up or something-- I dont know. But it is annoying and upsetting.

You really proved my point on the matter! It's NOT as simple as excessive heat (though it did seem heat related) and it's NOT as simple as a faulty app. In fact, at the VZW, the guy offered to do the factory reset right there, and it never got that far.

If something is so hosed it can't complete the factory reset, something ain't right..

O

Dumbest post on the internet right here.
.

I don't agree with you. I too, believe the issue to be heat related, at least it definitely is in my case.

My phone often gets stuck in the reboot cycle when the following criteria are all true:
  • Phone is charging in the car
  • GPS is on
  • Bluetooth is on
  • Recently using a GPS enable application like Google Maps
  • Phone is hot or at least 'warmer than normal' to the touch

I found that the only way I could get the phone to stop rebooting was to turn the air conditioning on and hold the phone in front of the vent until all the hardware was cold throughout. This works every time I need to interrupt that reboot cycle.

I will also say that I have seen the phone get very hot while using the GPS and it does not always reboot itself, however, when it does start rebooting, cooling the phone back down resolves the problem 100% of the time for me.

Now for some very speculative thoughts on why this might be:
If the phone has the ability to monitor its internal temperature (and I think it does) and there is a software failure while the temperature is above a certain threshold there may be some code in there that purposely causes the phone to shutdown or has the unintended consequence of causing the phone to shutdown while attempting to recover from said failure.

After dealing with this problem for several months I rooted my phone and installed the Cyanogen 6.1 RC2 rom to see if the problem would persist. It does not.

My conclusion is that it is both temperature and software related. My temporary solution was to cool the phone down. My permanent solution was to root and install a custom rom. YMMV

After receiving a refurbished replacement phone from Verizon, I'm now up to 168 hours of up time where before it would reboot several times per day.

Awesome. I'm now a member of this exclusive club.

Forgot and left the phone on overnight last night on a table in my house. (I usually keep it powered off at night.) OEM battery was in, it drained from about 90% to 47% from 10pm to 7am, which seems like a lot. Anyway, I powered down, swapped in another battery (I have two, one is always charged and ready to swap). Started it up and all I get now is reboots. At the moment, the battery is out of the phone, and I am letting it cool down before trying again.

I do not run a task killer and do not have many apps running, though I do use Beautiful Widgets and the home screen lock replacer thingy. Phone has been perfect up to now. Really hoping all it needs is a cool-down. Don't want a replacement...

Mine was doing this for some time, I had to do a factory reset ofr somthing or another and it has not done it since. I didnt redownload all the apps I had, so I was assuming it was an app that I had

Well I can't even get to the home screen. It just keeps rebooting. VZW is sending me a refurb replacement. Awesome. :(

Probably needs replaced, but the guy at the store may want you to try the factory reset.

Mine did this AT the store when the guy was trying to do the reset for me. He gave me a new one on the spot!

Well FML for calling CS, I'm getting a refurb. Nice...but that's what the store rep told me to do when I called in.

Next time, I'm going to the store directly.

Went ahead and did the factory reset and that worked. Lost root of course!! Ugh.

Edit: Did not lose root but this thing keeps overheating and rebooting. So frustrating.

Well for as much as I bemoaned VZW CS this summer (a lot of bemoaning) this guy was really cool. He just looked at me and said, "Well since I broke it, I owe you a new phone I guess . . . "

He also had an answer when I asked him about the AMOLED on mine vs the new SLCD screen. Most of the VZW employees would just give you the blank stare.

Not sure if any of you all are dealing with this, but every other day or so (especially when it's plugged into a charger) my Dinc will restart, get to the homescreen, then restart again. It repeats this pain-in-the-ass process over and over again until I take the battery out for about 5-7 minutes.

Is anyone else dealing with this? Is it a battery issue or a phone issue? This is my second Dinc, and I never had the problem with my first one.

Let me know if you all know of any remedies for this issue.

Thanks.

i've had random restarts before but not as frequently, and it never does it in a cycle. just one restart and it acts like normal after. it's really annoying when it does happen. this happens now, and on my previous incredible. i don't think it ever happened on 2.1.

if it's that bad i'd try a factory reset, and if it persists i'd ask for a replacement.

I used to have a lot of reboots on 2.1, but never this bad. If you are rooted, try a different Rom. If you are stock, there is something wrong with your phone. I would ask for a replacement device. This is not normal.

I'd suspect it's overheating. The the fact that it's cycle rebooting and then stops, and that it's doing it while charging is a pretty good indication that it's overheating. Next time, try unpluging it, setting it somewhere cool, and stop using it for a few minutes.

Yeah, the battery is very warm when I remove it. But most of the time, the device isn't under any heavy usage when it starts restarting. And I am still stock, not rooted.

Thanks for the info, I'll probably just go snag a replacement.

This happened to me last week due to overheating. Went to the verizon store, they did a battery pull just to see if it had been in water, and then shipped my a replacement (overnight) for no charge. I didn't even have to show that it repeatedly boots. Unrooted my old one and mailed it back. Very easy.

By any chance are you getting severe battery drain all the time? Almost sounds like something is constantly running. Might check your up vs. awake time to see if the phone is sleeping...settings > about phone > battery.

Just a thought, could be hardware too.

i have this problem too where it goes into this rebooting frenzy that sometimes wont even stop even after i pull the battery out and replace it. in fact, my incredible is having lots of problems. they sent me a new one, but it is not actually new, but instead is a "like new refurbished" phone. should i trust this or just request a new one instead of a refurbished one? i also downloaded a couple apps from the android market and for some reason, when i try to use them, a message pops up saying something like, "unable to link...". talk about a real pain. this phone has been a real headache. should it be this glitchy?

totally bogus :\

i have this problem too where it goes into this rebooting frenzy that sometimes wont even stop even after i pull the battery out and replace it.

Inc #1 overheated (probably) and went to an unrecoverable White Screen of Death (WSOD). Inc #2 was a refurb with massive overheating reboot problems (~30C == crash). Inc #3 was a refurb that has not crashed once in the several months I've had it.

I used Battery Watchdog to observe the correlation between temp and crashes. Inc #3 has been up to 40C (sub 1-bar reception + trying to connect to a balky wifi) and had no issues (other than me saying hm this thing is getting warm!).

So my experience is that the refurbs can be totally solid or they can suck.

so far, the refurb is working great. i will see how it goes. much better than the first phone that rebooted so much that i really couldnt use it at all. what a headache that was.
