Root droid is messed up, need help on this one.

I recently purchased a used incredible, the issue the owner said was wrong with it was the screen was stuck on the HTC white boot screen. I have fiddled with this thing for hours. First it would loop the boot screen, then it would vibrate 5 times and turn off flashing the green light. After much searching on the net, I finally got it to stop vibrating when turned on. I now have it to where it will boot up like normal until you see the slide to open screen then the screen goes black and it cycles back to the HTC boot screen.

I am at a loss with this one. I have tried flashing different roms, And now it is still stuck on the boot loop. (although it will power to the slide screen before reverting back to the loop). I have tried the stock PB31IMG file that was described in the back to stock thread and it still does it. What am I missing??

does PB31img flash successfully? Have you tried running it a second time?

Is the device s on or s off?

Thanks for the reply! PB31img does flash successfully, it goes through the update process and everything. And the phone is S-off. It's strange, because the phone will boot up just fine until it gets to the slide screen and then fall back into the boot cycle. I am under the impression that something just is not flashed on it right?

have you tried the factory reset option in hboot?

Has the phone had a custom recovery on it during your posession? If so,were you unable to mount or format any particular partitions?

Hey Scotty, I have done the factory reset many times. But I just figured it out,I used this guide earlier 5 Vibs of Death | PvilleComp's
But was not aware I was supposed to run the Death fix.zip. I ran that in recovery and rebooted the phone and it booted right up! It is now functional. But on the down side, I did not realize until now that this phone does not take a sim card! Is there anyway to activate other carriers on this phone such as t-mobile?

awesome! Glad you got it going.

Unfortunately, the Inc 1 is a cdma only phone. No way to use it with GSM carriers. :(

Ah, that's too bad :( lol. At least I got it working, I guess I could either sell it or use it as a media device of some sort. Thank you for the help Scotty85!

both of those options are good... i have a plethora of phones i dont really use as phones

im glad to help, but i didnt really do anything... just asked some basic questions while you figured out the answer to your prollem :D

at any rate its good to see it back to life and not in the bottom of a trash can ;)

Oh boy, BACK to square one. I am not sure what to do with this thing, It was working good for a few days and then I opened a game that I put on the phone and it started the looping issue again. I tried to follow this guide... http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/181255-how-return-stock-gingerbread.html

I figure maybe turning back into an S-on phone will correct the issue, but once I get to the step of flashing the forever S-on tool, I go to recovery and the phone will go to a blank screed vibrate 5 times and turn off. Any ideas on what I can do to fix this?:(

Well sounds like you are back to square one. There is no reason to go back to s-on, it does not effect the stability of the phone.

http://pvillecomp.com/?page_id=33 follow this again, I guess. I'd only give it one more shot at being stable though (but i lack patience when electronics start doing those type of things)

Thanks for the reply. Now I can follow that guide well but when it comes to the terminal emulator I am having an issue. What is a good terminal emulator to use?

I've only ever used the one called "terminal emulator"
Terminal Emulator

See the problem I am having with this method is the phone will not connect to the pc, it boots down before it has a chance to even connect. Unless there is someone to do this from the pc I am not sure how to go about this. Would renaming the Death fix file to PB31IMG do anything? Or does it have to have those commands typed out?

I've never had to perform the steps in that link so I'm not too familiar with it. But I asssume you are following the steps to boot up correctly (wait for the splash screen, then plug it in)?

Yes, wait until the first htc boot screen appears and then plug it in. What a headache this phone has turned out to be.

Really hate to say this but it sounds like a hardware failure of some sort. Definitely worth trying the 5 vibes fix again if you can interface the phone again but getting the vibes of death twice in such short order is ominous. Wish you the best though.

Ever think about using it with PagePlus Cellular, you can Prepay your phone

Check out Prepaid Cell Phone Cards | Prepaid National Cell Phones they run on Verizon's backbone.

I use it and it works great..

I got my HTC Incredible

S-Off
2.3.4 Gingerbread

I don't pay for data, I use WiFi whenever, but you can get a data plan with them.

16GB SDcard and I can back up my complete phone with it, I use Titanium Backup along with ROM Manager to complete my recovery cycle.

so did you run an RUU for either gingerbread or froyo? did you use .exe files or PB31IMGs? did they completely install without error?

there have been instances of .exe files fixing phones, that we have not thot fixable, giving the impression that the .exe may work better for recovery, tho theres no way to really confirm it,as the phones fixed with them may have been fixable with pxxximg files as well,we dont really know. point is that if youve only tried running PB31IMG files,it may be worth a shot to run the .exe

failing that, hopefully you are still s-off.

id install a recovery, boot to it,then see if its stable in recovery(i.e. no bootlooping)

you can run the terminal emulator commands in a cmd window while in recovery if youve got adb/fastboot and some experience with the cmd window allready :)

Call it beginners luck, since this is my first phone I rooted.. I had an HTC Eris before this one, not worth the effort...

My Incredible is workring GREAT with no apparent problems and I am 100% rooted with 2.3.4

I downgraded to 2.2 then went S-Off. So I guess this was the FROYO version.
Followed:
http://androidforums.com/incredible-all-things-root/427344-how-root-2-3-4-downgrade-get-s-off.html EXACTLY...

Then after I verified Root access and everything was working fine, using Root Checker, I then downloaded the 2.3.4 Gingerbread version of PB31IMG.ZIP from:

Thread: Finally...Gingerbread RUU (4.08.605.2)
http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-incredible/450788-finally-gingerbread-ruu-4-08-605-2-a.html

The final Gingerbread RUU for the Incredible is now available. Also extracted the rom.zip and made it available as a PB31IMG for those that prefer to update via hboot. Among other things, this will provide another option for those having problems getting updated with the multiple OTA's.
