"Droid" This and "Droid" That....

What makes a phone a "Droid"? I always thought it was a Motorola Branding technique... but then I saw the "Droid Charge". So what deems a phone to have the "Droid" title?
 
Droid is pretty much a Verizon brand name, no?

I don't flinch anymore when I hear it used generically. :D

On the one hand, it helps with recognition; proprietary eponyms can be good for an industry. The term "Droid" seems to be becoming one.
 
Ahh, it's a Verizon brand name. That makes sense now. Thank you.

Back in topic, "Droid" doesn't bother me. For me, it helps distinguish between people who know what they're talking about and people who are more casual about the Android Operating System.
 
If anyone reads the comments over at Engadget, there's a guy with an everchanging variation on "Norm". He always uses "droid" over android (and usually capitalizes it). He's an absolute troll (but a funny one nonetheless).
 
I've always hated the term "Droid."

It sounds immature and stupid, Android has a classy ring to it.

Considering I had a G1 when it came out and then more Android phones, I might just be an Android snob.

Plus I hate Motorola and Verizon.
 
I agree i can't stand it when people say they have a "Droid phone" the first thing that goes through my head is they probably don't even know what version of Android they are running. There are so many people out there that don't even realize that a Droid phone is an Android phone, and most of them don't even realize Android was made by Google.

Like Tslide91 said up above, i guess I'm an Android snob as well. Lol.
 
when someone tells me they just bought i droid i usually just say
man that's an old phone the droid hasn't been sold in a year or more
why didn't you get a current phone

of course then im called stupid
 
Aside for the actual phone called a Droid, "Droid" is a prefix used on premium Verizon phones. Not all phones on Verizon are called a "Droid-goofyname".

I think it was stupid to intentionally make a confusing naming scheme so early in the adoption of Android. YES I DO CRINGE when I hear people say it, and it especially annoys me when professional organizations do it. A local radio station routinely plays a commercial advertising their "Droid app". The local newspaper did the same thing until I wrote and corrected them.
 
I loathe this jargon! On another forum that I'm a member of people are always using their 'lappy'. For God's sake, 'laptop' is only two syllables, is it so difficult?

The worst ones are on watch forums. They always tell you that they found one on 'the Bay' and they never buy or purchase a watch. As soon as they decide that they want one they 'pull the trigger'! It really irks me, I must be getting old!

I couldn't care less as long as they're using it properly. Droids are Androids but not all Androids are Droids.

Well, Droid is a product line as well as a specific model.

Could be worse. Try "labtop". I guess those computers can only be used in labs and don't work elsewhere?
 
OTOH, I'm confident that even if Verizon had never used the "Droid" term to market a subset of their Android phones, the term 'droid would have caught on all the same.
 
From a marketing standpoint, Verizon harmonizing all of their Android phones under the 'Droid' umbrella is short of brilliant. Just imagine how hard and expensive it would be for them to market each and every Android phones they have. That's not an easy feat. By branding the phones under one category, Droid, the name will stick and resonate with the public. When creating a commercial, they can re-use one of the Droid commercials and at the end, say what Droid phone that Verizon is promoting. The name Droid will stick with the public longer with the customer after the commercial was aired.

 
Takeshi, that's what I mean. Using it in place of the word "android." NOT using it for a specific model/line of android devices.
 
I don't really care if the call an android phone a droid...just don't call it an iphone.:p

I remember when the droid 1 came out, people always said "cool iphone..I didn't know it had a keyboard. " :mad:
 
Droid Schmoid. I just wish people would stop calling their computers "The hard drive" and referring to MS Explorer as "The Internet".

I love labtops. Then again, to be fair, I work in a lab. Labtops do exist. They are those old computers that run some dated analytical software on some dated OS (95 anyone?). They absolutely cannot be upgraded because that breaks the software. The software is invariably from some company that no longer supports it (at least not that version), and it cannot be upgraded because then it does not work with the machine whose output it is analyzing, And the machine is invariably some $50000 humongous thing.

On topic, I agree with the poster above who said they do not care, so long as it is correct. Droid is perfectly good for any vzw branded Droid phone. Else, it is and Android phone.
