Droid vs Eris Pics & Video

I was at the Boston Aquarium last week and shot some video of the big 200,000 gallon tank. I looked amazing. Everyone I showed ask me. "You took this video on your phone? It looks amazing!" Everyone.

Bruceo, I understand you don't like many things about this phone but your approach really needs some work. Maybe you should look at getting a job at Motorola or Google?

What approach... Stating the facts and my dissapointment and frustration with d evice that does not live up to a fraction of what it is marketed to be and then read responses that are not adressing the actual issue and are obviously made to comfort themselves for comitting to a device that they have stuck themselves for 2 yrs and an unjustified etf. Yeah you may be able to correct all the issues by rooting but I fell for thaqt on winmo and spent countless hours flashing and configuring roms and even though it was much better it still sucked. I just don't want to wate time with rooting. The way it was marketed I thought the droid would finally be that phone that would be close to perfect right out of the box. It isn't by far. I am hoping htc next high end device will be that device, not perfect but get at least the expected basics.

Only time will tell but believe me if it does come and soon I will be visiting this forum to call some people out. :-)

Personally, I don't think that any phone comes out perfect or even near perfect out of the box. Once these hit real world, thats when a 1st gen phone gets battle tested.

Thats why HTC probably will have the better luck because they've had a few iterations of Android devices to screw up and make better. For instance the G1 which I think is a terrible phone and a lot of people who didn't like it.

Apple makes a killing off of this philosophy because they only have one phone and one OS to worry about. It makes it easier for them to deal with certain issues and just refine them.

Since there are a few more cooks in the kitchen with the Android phones I can assume that makes this learning curve a little more difficult. Google has to make a one size fits all OS and then all of the phone manufacturer have to custom fit it to their hardware and style.

I think they may have rushed Android 2.0 a little fast but I don't run into any complaints that you do. Maybe its because I use my phone as a straight business and life management device over anything else. So as a camera, I've run into a few blurry cam issues but nothing major thats makes me cringe or anything.

I can also agree some of the core apps in the OS really need some work. Google owns when it comes to simplicity, they are pretty decent when it comes to functionality but where they fail is the sleek, smooth and sexy.

But thats my take and I'm probably taking your posts the wrong way since I don't run into any of the issues that you do. I don't have very many complaints or gripes about this phone. I think HTC will probably take the lead again probably first or second quarter 2010. But then Motorola will be having their next versions coming out. Right after HTC releases their new Android phones Motorola will announce their next rocking version.

But that is the cycle of technology unless your an Apple fan whom comes out with a new version of their product once every year.

Damn, I really started to ramble there. Back to xmas decorations. :)

Thanks for taking the time to make a thoughtful post and not a mindless unsubstantive rebuke.

just for the record, i tested and the 2.0.1 update DOES NOT fix this issue.

however, at this point i am extremely confidant this is not a "design tradeoff" and is, in fact a software bug. that's because by recording a bright area and then quickly panning to a dark area, i have been able to "trick" the camera into staying in bright mode! this means for a few seconds it will brighten the dark area as you would expect it to and you can actually see everything in your recording, but eventually it adjusts to the horrible dim camera mode leaving you with the essentially black picture.

here's to hoping motorola/google cares about this enough to fix it.

Unfortunate... I am trying out the Iphone 3Gs right now and I was checking up on my daughter a few moments ago and she was on her bed sleeping with one of her dolls and the weather outside is gloomy and the sunlight coming in the room was very dim and I tried a shot and it came out great whereas it would have been black with my droid. Its also nice to shoot a clear video and then quickly trim off the bad and excess footage then upload it to facebook. Pasion with 720P video please come out Jan wk 1 :-)
