Droid, Wifi, and VOIP?

So I am wondering...
If I buy an online number from Skype ($18 for 3 months), will people be able to call my droid when I am away from 3G but connected to wifi and logged on to fring?

Skype Out = "oubound calling" = $3/mo (you can use Verizon cell # as Caller ID)

Skype online number = "inbound calling" = brand new phone # = $60/yr. (or $30/yr. if you have Skype Out)

Online number SkypeIn - Skype personal internet number

I discovered a significant limitation on the usefulness of fring. After I make a call, I need a dialpad to retrieve my voicemail. Fring apparently does not support this feature.

I installed sipdroid and sipsorcery with hopes to make voip cals while traveling. Works fine on my home network but failed in san juan, st thomas and tortola. Not sure about the usefulness based on this trip.

LMAO... wait 'til you get married! Oh things will change then. LOL

Seriously, Vonage is a good service. I'm sure in time the Sip Creds will come out. Right now I'm trying to get my Droid to sync with my laptop and Lotus Notes...

Ya, Im out of the country for maybe a few more years. I have paid Vonage Home service (Linksis CAT5 device) for many years now to keep my home phone number. I had it working on my Iphone via Fring/Siax , but stupid me didn't write the decrypted password down. Iv'e been looking for it everywhere and forever without luck. Since the crack URL doesn't work anymore, does anyone know of another way to get it? Does it still work? Or did Vonage somehow disable it from working using the old method? Thanks so much, BTW: What's wrong with being married? My life so far had been great.. ;-) I guess it depends on your comp of your wife ;-)

Downloaded the fring update today (ver 2.0.0.13). DTFM dialpad is now supported in the android version.

fring + skype = wifi calling without the need for cell service!
Skype out to any phone number at very low cost.

I have been reading this and have some questions.
I have no verizon 3g at home, I have the extender.
When I travel internationally and/or can I make and receive calls at home using a mixture of sip/fring/google voice/the force/gizmo5?
I picked up a gizmo5 account just in case. I have a gv also

You may want to try software called friendcaller. It works. Got it on the Droid market. Regular phone calls made via wireless lans are cheap.

I have a terrible CDMA signal at my house and was very eager to set up a sipgate + sipsorcery + GV solution to make calls with my Droid over my WiFi connection. And I must say, it's fairly disappointing. The connection is pretty reliable but there is a more or less unbearable 2-3 second delay while talking for both ends.

Does anyone else experience this type of delay using this setup?

Where/how did you pick up a gizmo5 account?

I have looked all over for a solution and am really wondering if there is one at this point in time for Moto Viop -improved call quality over 3G.
I have: Droid Moto 2.1 w\
Gizmo5,GV,Sipsorcery via sipdroid voip and silverlite..
I can say that the sipdroid voip interface is great-blends tight in with the phone buttons. The only difference is the screen that comes up during the call (a slider to hang up or answer)That is all I can say positive about it so far.THe calls are buggy(sipdroid voip).Sometimes it drops calls in a few seconds- random drops sometimes it won't after multiple call attempts and call back.
THe sound quality is so poor that I cannot communicate with repeats and "can you hear me?'s" sometimes the callers voice plays fast forward and other times the call goes right to g-voicemail. I still have the google voice app loaded into my phone from before I finally bought an ebay Gizmo5 account( had google voice long ago).Super choppy dead space and words \parts of sentenced dropped.
I also read that verizon offers a data only plan (anyone aware of that? THey told me that I had to have a min of minutes plan).
Obviously I am trying to go 100% Voip and thought that the current hype about the technology available would be much better than what I have experienced. I cannot use my phone for communication Voip when using 3G.
I have the most recent version of everything and have read that this works great on motodroid. Wifi is as good or better than the moto droid on a cell call.
Is anyone aware of any specif issues with this combo of soft\hardware that creates poor quality or enables improvement?

- Have you tried setting up your SIP client via a trunk on pbxes.org (per sipdroid's instructions; trunk service is free)?

- Getting a SIP client from a "full service" VoIP provider such as callcentric? Again, configuring client via online trunk provider (e.g. pbxes.org) and sipdroid. callcentric can also be used to support your home and traditional POTS phones, a la Vonage.

- Combination of Skype In/Out (unlimited calling within US for ~ $13/mo, and can use your current Verizon cell number as caller ID).

- Configure Vonage account via sipdroid and trunk provider (nothing like having your home phone service extended to a mobile device)?

I must not understand the trunk service and pbx. I do not understand what this may have to do with call quality.
I went to the pbx site and registered and got lost after that. THe interface on the site isn't functioning correctly and isn't user friendly. Do you know how to set a pbx up?
As for the other options, I am trying to go free, if it is possible 3G voip.
I do not see the point of merging home lines and mobil. I don't see why anyone would have a land line or multiples phones. I have a phone why would I need another one? I can only be on 1 at a time and prefer to not be locked down to a location because of a phone. THe point is to be totally mobile and voip- anywhere.

There are many reasons to chose one SIP/pbx provider over another, most related to cost and QoS. Call quality is mainly dependent on latency, circuit quality/connection, and bandwidth/codec. "For me", pbxes.org's call quality seems better than sipsorcery's. I was also able to get calls connected on a more consistent basis than sipsorcery...YMMV. However you started your post stating that the solution was "buggy".

You'd be hard pressed to get "free" VoIP service, that allow calls to the PSTN, without use of an additional phone number/service/cost. But again, Skype Out will let you make calls with your current "cell number" as the caller ID. "$3/mo for unlimited minutes" is a very inexpensive way to expand/leverage a cell service provider's cheapest plan. The reason "I" merge Vonage service with mobile (on one devices) is that Vonage not only provides unlimited calling to the US, but also unlimited "free" calling internationally (YNMV), of which my g/f calls her family everyday in Europe...along with the fact that my home number is the number I've had the longest, and provide to businesses. I also need/want a fax line.

The cost of Vonage on a monthly basis, is similar to adding "unlimited calling" to the cost of a mobile plan, however I have more features provided with Vonage (i.e. Ring Blast, availability numbers, etc). So I pay for the least expensive mobile plan, but have additional/unlimited minutes and functionality with SIP service. Vonage services (4) phones in my house, so I don't have to worry about dragging my cell phone all over the house, along with providing the connectivity I need for my Satellite provider's update process.

I can only be on 1 at a time and prefer to not be locked down to a location because of a phone. THe point is to be totally mobile and voip- anywhere.

How would having (2) phone numbers working on (1) mobile device "lock you down"? I can also forward my work calls to my Vonage number, so I do not have to "stay in the house" when I'm on call. Vonage number ringing on my cell, and not using any "minutes", alows me to be infinitely more mobile.

I have not used a minute in a month. My call quality outside of wifi isn't so hot sometimes.Other times it is crystal clear. I still haven't figured out the pbboxes on sip yet.

So Sipdroid is free? And compatible with most Sip based VoIP provider? Thinking of using my Onesuite VoIP with Android phone. Haven't decided yet which phone though.

Yes, Sipdroid is free. What you will need is:
An Android Phone (Obviously)
Sipdroid (Free)
A VOIP Account

I'm sure you won't have a problem, I have set up Sipdroid with my Gizmo5 account and it's working perfectly. Also, you can sign up for a Google Voice account (free) and you will get a GV number, which you can set up to forward to your gizmo number. For example, I have my phone set up so when friends call me, if I have service available I can answer my phone normally, and if I am somewhere with a good WiFi connection, I can answer using VOIP. They can call this without needing to know the VOIP number, which helps. Let me know if you have any other questions, PM me if you need to.

hey,

i tried VoipDing and i felt comfortable with it. The home solution works and the mobile solution have not yet tested. i dont know a better way to call abroad at low prices. Do you?

What kind of rates does VoipDing charge? I use Gizmo5 because it has free incoming calls. Outgoing calls have a charge. However, if you use the app "Google Voice Callback", you can set up your phone so you can make calls, and GV will call you and make the call for you. Effectively, you can make outgoing calls for free too by using GV Callback. The GV Callback trick might work for VoipDing too, does it give you free incoming calls?

Thanks. I have GV and Gizmo but haven't really use it much. I still don't have an Android phone yet but thinking of getting an iPad clone instead like an aPad with Android OS. I guess SIPDroid will work on aPads too.

Probably will work, but...
If the device does not have a mic you might need a headset to use it
.. But I dont know sipdroids bluetooth capability so you might want to look into that.

Most tablet devices like that do not have ear speakers like phones do, so if you are making a call it might be coming through a louder speaker and allow people nearby to hear your conversation. But for this you could use headphones.

I haven't heard of an aPad but I've heard the galaxy tab is great
