Root Droid X .596/Z4/D2 Bootstrap Issues.. Can't install any zips?

Having two different issues with my phone.

SBF'd with .596. Rooted with Z4, using Droid2 bootstrap.

For one: I can't reboot into bootstrap through the app. I have to use the old fashion way.

For two: Any time I try to install any update zip files, I get an exception error. Doesn't matter what type of update it is.

Specifically, I've been trying to flash a wugfresh wireless tether update so I can use it on the stock .596, but no dice.

What could be wrong, and what could I do to remedy?

i dont think there is a .596 sbf file, and GB is unrootable with z4root, you have to use the d3 method


with d2 bootstrap you must hit bootstrap recovery, hit ok for success, then reboot recovery

these zip files must be compatible with .596 gb or they will not install.

you must sbf to froyo root with z4 root, then install the prerooted .596 ota gb

d2 bootstrapper make sure you hit bootstrap recovery first, then reboot recovery, and thats all you need to do.

There is a .596 sbf file.
 
Dammit, now the stickies have been moved around, I cant find the link for the thread of the directions I followed.

But, I followed them to a T. Did a SBF linux CD, SBF'd to Froyo, installed Z4, installed D2 strap, bootstrap recovery, reboot recovery, flashed two part blur_version.2.3.340.MB810.Verizon.en.US-Part1.zip.

The sticky was up there for months. Now it's gone, replaced with the .602 directions.

I was an ace at rooting D1.. but when it came to the DX, my mind was blown - so I didn't come up with all this stuff on my own, I followed directions. Just can't find them now. :(

HOWEVER - If the directions were wrong, and I need to fix it, could someone point me in the right direction? Is the non-root/Z4 issue the reason why i can't flash any zip files?

I can run root only apps.. so i don't quite understand. Titanium runs just fine, I've removed bloatware stuff...I can run wifi tether (although nothing will connect).. etc

Maybe i've misled, but I believe the directions were to SBF froyo, root with Z4, then proceed. Wouldn't that provide a rooted GB? Pretty sure that's what i've read all over the place..

This is pretty much exactly what i did.

Gingerbread for Newbs

1. If your not sure about your set up then SBF back to stock Froyo by following This Video. It
has links in the description to files you need to download. Its actually very easy and should
only take 30-45 minutes (if its your first time). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

2. You have to be rooted and have the Droid 2 Bootstrap on your phone.
Use Z4Root to root your phone. Takes about 30 second to root your phone. http://www.droidxforums.com/fo... Link credit : Wicked @ droidxforums
Then download Droid 2 Bootstrap from the market ($3)
3. Download the part1 and part 2 files from above to your computer (DO NOT UNZIP THEM)
Connect phone to computer in “USB Mass Storage” mode.
Drag and drop the 2 files you downloaded onto your sd card (NOT IN ANY FILE, you will
See them at the bottom of your sd cards files list)
4. Open Droid 2 Bootstrapper and click “Bootstrap Recovery”, click “OK”
Then click “Reboot Recovery”. When your phone comes up use volume keys to scroll down to
“Install Zip From SD Card”. Use camera button to click it. Then scroll down to “Install Zip
From SD Card” and click it. Next scroll down till you find the “Part 1” file and click on it.
When it gets done loading, scroll down to the “Part 2” file and click on it. When it’s done
loading you should see “Reboot System Now”, if you don’t then push your
power button on top 1 time to take you back a page and you will see it. Click “Reboot System Now”
and let it run. It may take a while so don’t get scared, just give it time. This whole proces shouldn't take
more than an hour.
5. Enjoy some Gingerbread :)

a new rsd lite... maybe it works with windows 7 now. basically bud this works the same just replace the .602 sbf with either the .596 or the .340 and thats all you gotta do in all honesty, everything else will be the same
 
imo if your still having problems just start fresh. Follow the link that you put in Post #7

the first link you posted involving Z4 root was originated in May. That was a long time ago and things have changed a bit since then.

also where you may have went wrong. Here is the first line of those instructions

only take 30-45 minutes (if its your first time).

You mentioned in your OP that you sbf'ed to .596
.596 is NOT froyo. So that may have been one issue.

OK.. that makes sense. So.. just so i'm clear on how i should proceed:

1. SBF back to 340, stock. Should I unroot? Or does going back to 340 unroot it to begin with?
2. Use a simple root tool, like Pete's 1-click. Reinstall bootstrap.
3. SBF 602.. Will it retain root?

Sound accurate?
 
heads up. the current GB build is actually .605 There is a .605 SBF file but some people have had problems with it. So do this in addition with that guide

1. after sbf'ing to .602 activate your phone and all of that goodness. Then do a system update check and let it download .605.

2. Then proceed with the rooting method in that guide. That rooting method works on .602 and .605
