Just as a note since it happened to me yesterday, if you are bootlooping after sbf, you should go into stock recovery and wipe data/cache. After 3 failed sbfs, I got that tip here and it fixed the bootloop immediately. This is apparently happening to quite a few folks, maybe GB related, I dunno.

Ok, so I understand the SBF portion of the process, well as much as I can by reading. I'm more of a hands on learner so I will tackle that process if I need to, or when I need to.
Moving on from SBF, I really would like to flash a ROM (Apex). What is the first step you typically would take before going into flashing?!

First step is to create a backup to have something to fall back on, don't matter how many backups you create you can never have enough, after that its just a matter of going to the first page in the thread of the rom you want to flash where the devs will post info about the rom and instructions, follow the install instructions to a t , don't care what anyone says, the devs created it and they know best so don't cut corners and follow them, then flash your rom, re set up your stuff ( in time you will be a pro at this step lol) and enjoy ....the most important tip I can give is always wipe data unless otherwise posted and even then I still do, some hate to because they don't want to set everything back up but in the end this will lead to issues more times than none ( this step will also be in the install guide ) ...let me know if you run into issues

One more thing I would like to touch on about backups ....when they file as they read it is numbers and dates on your sd card, after making numerous backups you won't remember which is which , so to cut down on confusion we rename them, now this can be done in rom manager which I don't use or just as easy from your file manager ( I use astro or estrongs) now after you make the backup go to your file manager and open it, scroll to sd card and open it, then go to clockworkmod and open it then backups and open it, here you will be presented with a list of the ones you made, longpress it and you will be given a list of options, select rename, now the most important step is DO NOT include any spaces in your rename, instead substitute spaces for underscores or dashes, reason is if you include spaces when you go to restore from recovery the md5 cheksum wont match, so my backups tend to look like this
APEX_1.4.1 or
STOCK_ROOT
Notice the underscores etc , not sure if this was explained to you yet or not but im just trying to save you troubles

Another great tip I can provide is AFTER you flash your rom and AFTER you get it all set back up with homescreens and how you want it make a backup of it that way you have a clean backup of that rom so if you install any mods or themes for your chosen rom and something goes wrong no fear you have a clean backup of the rom all set up already to restore, this is a time saver my friend because if you didn't have this backup and something did go wrong then you have to reflash the rom etc, this tip will cut all that out if the equation, this is also useful for installing themes for your rom, it's never good to flash a theme on top of another one as it can leave trails like a color or icon from your old theme to your new one so let's say you have your rom installed and want a theme and install it, well 2 months later you decide that you want a change, don't flash your new theme over the top of the old, instead restore our clean rom backup as I described above THEN flash your new theme and you can do this whenever you want to jump from theme to theme, again im not trying to overwhelm you with info just providing tips myself and others have had to learn the hard way with or been passed along from others

I appreciate this tip. I have already done this step! I actually made 2 STOCK_ROOT backups, as you stated before... You can't have enough of those.
I feel as if I'm ready to flash my first ROM. A few other quick questions before I start. Should I purchase Titanium Backup PRO and ROM Manager or should I just stick with the Free versions?!

I don't use either really but when I did the free version was fine, but if you like them and use them purchase them as a donation to the dev for their hard work!

Well I don't use rom manager because it can be buggy imo and all rom manager is clockworkmod recovery with a nicer ui to it, I prefer to manually install etc from clockwork and I start fresh with my apps after an install rather then restore data for apps with titanium as imo restoring data can also sometimes lead to issues so I let my apps re sync from the market after sign in to google and start fresh

I've decided to use the Liberty ROM. I am moments away from taking the leap of faith. I've got my DX connect to my PC getting ready to put the .zip file onto my SDCard.
Any last words of encouragement before we do this gangster sh*t?!

Now I will let all of my applications re download from the market place! After that I will reset up my phone to my likings.
Again, thanks for your help. After toying with this for a while, I may be back to pick your brain for some more knowledge!

I suggest making a clockworkmod (nandroid) backup immediately after flashing a new rom.
