So as some of you may know come July 15th I'll be owning a Droid X and it will be my first smart phone. Huzzah! However I was wondering how many of you may hold off now that there are more rumors of a 2 Ghz processor (made by Motorola of course) coming out in Q4 of 2010, supposedly confirmed for either Q4 of 2010 or Q1 of 2011 by the CEO of Motorola. And if you're not that's cool. I mean I know in the world of computers that sometimes the smallest upgrades make the biggest difference, but to me I've found a phone that I can be comfortable with for the next two years and if not I can always sell it on like Ebay or something and purchase a newer one like a lot of people on this forum do. So sound of loud and clear. Remember newbie here, so I'm not saying anything about waiting for the next or best thing, cause if you did you'd never have a new phone, just with the rumors saying it's around the corner so soon are any of you rethinking your purchase or still going to purchase and then just upgrade later if you like what you see.

In PC world, the main reason for having the baddest computer possible to run the newest game at the highest setting resolution.
In mobile world, that really does not apply since there is almost NO POINT in owning 10Ghz phone with 70 GPU's since not a single app requires such performance. This might change in the future but not soon.
Please tell me what you can do with a 12-core 100Ghz phone that you can't do with OMAP 36xx
 
"Just around the corner" could easily be 9-12 months off here. Do you want to wait until then? What about in 9 months when there's a rumor of another new phone 3-6 months away? What do you do then?
 
heh! I just bought a sony quad core I7 with 6 gb ram, blu-ray, and hi def screen. So..what do I use it for? gmail and posting here! ;)

Yea true I mean I'm the one buying the pieces to keep our computer up to gaming speed. But Motorola is claiming that the faster speeds alwill allows buisness users to access their information quicker and emails even faster.

Exactly right. You'll always be waiting for the next beat thing if you don't jus bite the bullet and get what you need in a phone now.

Or think of it this way; If you constantly go out and buy the latest and greatest, with each purchase you are only gaining a little, but if you actually wait the whole 2 years **GASP** it's like going from an old 386 (that you went ahead and got the math co-processor) to a sextuple core i12. Soon enough you won't have to touch the damn thing, just think it and you are calling Mom or an old friend. As you are driving up it will automatically open the garage door and turn on your favorite cd's. Of course that is possible now, but I digress . . .;)

Hahaha I would love the garage door opener since mine isn't the orginial and thus it only works like within a 10 ft radius hahaha. But ya I plan on keeping mine for like two years lol so when I upgrade it's like wow gee golly wiz
 
For a while I was so sure that I was getting one. Then I wasn't. Now I am again... Yeah, I go back and forth on this all the time. For me, this phone is a huge purchase. I was always on a family plan with a $10 line, so it was affordable for a poor college student like me. But I've had an upgrade for almost a year, which is saying something since I've been getting by on a crappy samsung glyde. Now I really want to take the plunge and get a fancy smartphone with a data plan. So because of the fact that I can barely afford the phone, I am still very hesitant. I don't want to deal with another crappy phone for 2+ years. But at the same time, once I purchase the X I cant afford to just go out and grab whatever fancy new phone comes out in a few months, so I have to be absolutely sure this is the phone for me. Its so hard for me to make this kind of purchase when I know that some new amazing phone will be released right after I buy the X. However, the X does have everything I want in a phone, so I'm just gonna go for it after all.

I am not a gamer, so maybe I am just in a different world, but I just replaced my 8 year old PC for a new PC and I was expecting greatness but really don't see much difference. My wife still complains her Farm doesn't load fast enough, so what's the point? Applications & OS are being made to perform worse and worse that the hardware doesn't really keep up.

I can remember an old 386 PC, for those of us that just do email and browse the web all the advances really havent made much difference :(

But back to the topic, if you are always waiting for the next best thing, you will never get anything. Find what meets your requirements and buy it. If 6 months later you really need something better, you can probably sell your existing device on Ebay and trade up.

see I'm in college and I can't afford to get some crappy phone so I'm making sure all my ducks are in a row before I purchase. So I hear you loud and clear.

There are plenty of great devices currently on the market for FREE with a contract for the starving college crowd. There are a few great devices coming out this month or next from all the US carriers, even if you are set on one, it may help you in the price area. You may also want to wait a few weeks (hey you have been with the same device for 3 years, whats a few more weeks), you might get a better deal once another carrier releases the next smartphone. Look at Walmart, Wirefly and BB and other re-sellers for deals, generally always better than buying directly from the carrier.

Also to add, if you are a poor college student, you don't need a smartphone.
It's fun but not needed so don't complain about money when you are buying something unnecessary.

Well it's only partially unnecessary. I mean we need access to all our emails at all times on the go and off the go. And the Internet. I mean sure I have my laptop all the time but I'm not all the time near a wifi area or hotspot you know? So it is needed in certain areas and unnecessary in others.
 
Gummibands, if you are contemplating on whether or not you should wait, like i am too, i would say that you should check on ebay to get ur hands on an android phone and then see if say september there is something better, it is not really cost effective, although, i was considering that option myself....But i know i want the droid x, another option is doing the whole "Annual upgrade scenario" in which you can upgrade every year as long as you calling plan is more than $50, i think or is it $60, when i get the X, i will use the 900 minutes plan, so i can get an annual upgrade, by then i am sure, there would be something awesome on the market...

Well I'm on a family plan and my family has said just pay the extra on your line and your good. So I pay the additional 30 (kinda like I do if I use their credit cards, I pay for what I buy etc etc etc (we have the venture card and I use it to help them get more miles)) so it's not like I'm paying like 100 plus a month. I just want to know what I'm signing up for is shat it's cracked up to be you know? An informed shopper is always better. So I lurk and learn ask some questions and in the end I just need to make sure that I have all my ducks in a row.

Nice nice, and i definitely agree, as college students we definitely need those smartphones, sometimes e-mails go out and you are not within reach of wifi, they are definitely helpful...

Well I know this past semster I had about fourteen heart attacks simply because I was taking tests and got locked out and now I have to email my professor and I have to leave for work but have to get the test done within a two hour limit or I have to email the professor over a paper and I have work and I need to think about it and of course with my amazing mind (hahaha not really I forget everything) I can write down snippets of a paper when I out on the floor on sheets of paper and stuff them in my pockets. Hahaha I'm so weird.
 
I say just go buy it. IMO, there is no point in waiting for some new electronic unless it's coming out the next month or two. Any more than that, it's not worth waiting for. Plus, I think the X will hold it's value pretty good by the end of the year so you could always sell it and then get the 2Ghz one. Although I doubt it'll be a good phone since the 1Ghz phones use enough of the battery already to last a day.

About students not needing a smartphone. Well, all I gotta say is that smartphone is very helpful. Especially when your professor cancels the class an hour before it starts and sends out that email, communicating via email in general, having internet 24/7, or cheating on the test(I kid). :)

Ya or not telling you and you sending out a mass email on the discussion board. Hahaha. I think that maybe two or three generations ago smartphones for kids wasn't necessary, kinda like alot of ppl say that blackberries are needed for college kids. Well alot of college kids I know have blackberries. So the times change. Like I take notes with a laptop all the time in class.

Hahaha thats exactly what my dad said! :rolleyes: I know you're right but... but... it'd be so helpful and convenient. And I'm also really tired of all my friends bragging about their silly iPhones (yes, their parents pay for all of it). I'm not really complaining that I dont have enough money, but it is a bit of a tight budget. But all I have to pay is $30 to my dad for the data on my family plan line, and since I just got a pretty good job, it should be easier.

I'm mostly just worried about new phones coming out in the future because whatever phone I chose, I'm stuck with it for another 2-3 years. I know that technology will always bring better phones, I'm just wondering if the technology within 1 year from now will really justify waiting. What kind of phone capabilities are within the foreseeable future, and do they justify waiting?
