Help Droid X - Water Damage Motorola Replacement

Hello,

I acquired a two month old Droid X from a friend who dropped it into a river. They thought it was completely broken and they gave it to me. Turns out the backlight is dead on it, but everything else is fine. Phone still works perfectly, apart from being really hard to see the screen. So, I called Motorola and told them my backlight had died and they said my phone was still under warranty and they gave me an RMA. However, the water indicator is red on the back of the phone (And on the battery, but I don't need to send that in). Will this void my warranty? I read somewhere that the red dot doesnt void it unless the USB port and headphone ports are corroded, and since both of them work perfectly, I don't believe that has happened. If it does void my warranty, how much will they charge me to fix the screen? Its a very nice phone and I'd love to be able to see the screen properly.

Thanks

i'm guessing they'll see the red water indicator and not replace it, but that's just my opinion

i think someone on here has already replaced their screen - might be worth a search

I think they'll check the serial numbers and spank your sorry a$$. You have warranty on a different phone. What you're trying to do is illegal and immoral.

I'm not sure he is trying to do what you think. Honestly the post doesn't give enough info to decide one way or another.

Send the phone in IMHO. If they shoot you down, you haven't lost anything (except maybe shipping). Just be honest about the situation and see where the chips fall.

If they won't replace it, then look into replacing the screen yourself. You would have little to nothing to loose at that point. If you screw it up, you haven't lost anything since the phone isn't practical to use right now anyway.

I am not quite sure what you meant by this. I was just attempting to use the warranty on the Droid X to fix the Droid X. What is this other phone you speak of, and the legality? I dont remember claiming on a warranty being illegal.

So, I got it back today from Moto, untouched and a note saying that they wont fix water damaged phones, and all the usual crap. I took it apart and noticed a lot of corrosion on the ribbon cables (The LCD and touch screen connector and cable) which I got the majority off, but no luck. I have taken the main PCB out which looks fine. I have taken the T4 screws out of the screen, but have reached a snag. It seems that 3 of the screws are either completely stripped (These are in the same row as the T4 screws) or of a different type. Looking at them under a microscope makes them look like a very small hex which wouldn't make any sense. All the others came out fine so I am rather confused.

The phone still boots up, so I'll keep cleaning it with hopes that I can fix it. Would anyone know if any company sells replacement Droid X screens? Or of any documentation on what pins go to the backlight and where the related circuitry for it is?

Thanks.
