Droid X2 Review

Could my TV being only 720p be causing issues with the mirroring not looking great on my TV?

Let me rephrase - homescreen and gallery, etc, looks bad... videos like youtube in high quality, or 720p videos my phone took look good...

^Is there any HDMI settings on the phone? I think its one on the DX1, dont have it in front of me to check n see.

Strange for some things to look bad and some to look fine.

nothing more than changing how much "overscan" there is - i.e. how much space it takes up on your tv

didn't the DX1 have actual settings where you could change the resolution and hz ?

If only I had my DX1 with me....lol. I wanna say yea but...I really cant remember. I never used the HDMI Out on it. I got the app to support Gman, but thats about it.

Yea, it's under Settings>HDMI>HDMI format. Seems the DX2 is missing this menu.

Any word on the level of bootloader lockout this phone has?

Haven't heard yet, nor have I heard much about it being worked on. I would say it's safe to assume it's the same as the DX. The phone's only been out a few days, and even then not everywhere, so hopefully we'll hear something soon...

Scaling for the Tegra 2 is supposed to be 480p, 720p and 1080p. If anything, seems the 720p would be more stable, since 1080p seems high bandwidth for a relatively small air cooled device.

Motorola miss on some setting options?

The LG Rev only scales to 720p, per the user manual.

So I've been comparing this to the Dinc2, which is an incredibly nice phone... common sense (no pun intended) tells me the Dinc2 will be my best bet, but there's just something ruggedly attractive about the X2...

FWIW, battery life the first 24 hours was only "ok" on the X2. Got about 16 hours (rebooted once so I lost the uptime count) on moderate use. Now, about an hour of that was playing with the HDMI mirroring and HD video recording, games and all that, so I'm sure that's a big drain - though the battery itself didn't drop much during that time. But while I was at the store this morning, with the screen on a lot to go through the list, I went from about 30% down to 15% in a very short amount of time. I know it's hard to gauge, but I think the screen sucks battery as much, or more, than the previous style screen. Other than those two instances, my usage was pretty light to moderate.

Maybe the phone was sucking down more juice trying to pull a signal from inside the store.

true, good point... but normally I've never had issue with the 3G signal on VZW - but yeah that definitely could be!

Due note a great way to effectively drain the batter on your X2 is by leaving the screen on the brightest resolution. 25% of my battery goes towards my display, and after effectively dimming the brightness to an effective level (at least with in-door use), I've remedied a lot of my previous frustrations regarding battery strain.

I would also suggest investing in the Extended battery. It's been one of the best accessory purchases I've made for ANY phone I've owned, and even better, it adds almost no additional girth to this already large phone (something like 1mm).

would you mind sharing or linking the extended battery you use that's working well and adding so little size?

Also, I get dimming the screen, but one reason I moved away from the bolt is so I wouldn't have to do a lot of tweaking just to get through an entire day of battery. Plus, in a bright grocery store, auto brightness should be toning that sucker down! :)

Obviously battery life will vary given your usage and the apps/features you are running (GPS, video playback/streaming, and related functions will cause a great deal of strain on the battery) but it doesn't necessarily hurt to tweak settings here and there :P

As far as the extended battery goes, in order to properly use it you will need to have the extended battery door as well. I've been told the original door fits, but can cause quite a bit of pressure against the screen, which is a good way of having to RMA your new DX2 :P

VZW sells both the door and battery for $50 but it's currently out of stock online :( If you keep your eye on it, and it comes back in-stock soon you would be able to use the code: bat30 to knock 30% off the total price. - Set Your Location

Otherwise there's always a direct purchase from Motorola, who unfortunately sells both the door and battery separately, so you'll be looking at $60 shipped:

Door - Extended Battery Door for DROID X

Battery - Extra Capacity Battery BH6X for DROID X (1800 mAh)

Be weary of knock-offs sold on ebay and Amazon; I was ignorant and decided to go this route originally, and they were nowhere near the capacity indicated.

Can anybody comment in more detail about the X2's battery life? How long are you going until you need to charge.

I'm between this and the Incredible2 which supposedly has a great battery life.

Thanks.

I traded in my Dinc2 for the DX2. I had to charge my Dinc2 daily, especially when I first got it. I can go a couple of days on the DX2 with light-moderate use (surfing primarily on wifi with some 3G, a couple of hours of calls, 10 pictures, a few minutes of video and general tinkering with the OS). Not very scientific, but it's all I've got right now.

I will emphatically state the phone reception is MUCH better on the DX2 than anything else I've used. I'm getting full bars in the house and don't drop to 1X nearly as often than I did with the Dinc2. I switched from AT&T to Verizon because of the horrible reception at the house and wasn't too thrilled with the Dinc2. The DX2 is exactly what I've been looking for regarding reception. I can make calls and use 3G if the power goes out.

I'm not terribly impressed with the display. The Dinc2 has a much crisper display and the DX2 isn't even in the same realm as the iPhone4. If the DX2 had the Dinc2's screen, I'd be perfectly happy.

Tested the DX2 for over an hour today. Since the call quality and signal reception are already confirmed to be very good, I will focus on the more subjective stuff:

Display:

The pentile tech is offset by the qHD res. It is nowhere near as grainy as my Incredible, which is only a 3.7" display (amoled and pentile both have the same grain issues due to the tech used). At any rate, the qHD (IMO) nulls the grain impact.

Blows the TB out of the water. No comparison.

The Xperia Play was AWFUL compared to the DX2

Better than my Inc

I prefer the colors on the DX2, compare to the near-cartoon look of some colors on the Charge (and my Inc).

Better brightness, contrast and more crisp than the DX1

DX2 display IMO rocks

Touch response:

Better than the Charge, TB, DX1 and my Inc

I installed Tiger Arcade and then Metal Slug, Neo Mr Do, DonPachi and DoDonPachi (great shooters). Besides looking great on the DX2, they played surprisingly well with the Vpad. The Pachi games ROCKED in portrait mode :)

The VZW I tested also got in the Revolution today, but VZW stores can not activate it yet. I did not compare the display, or anything else, since could not get past emergency call screen, due to no activation yet. Based on angles, it does NOT appear to be an IPS panel.

Oh yeah, DX2 ROCKS! I will test the Rev in the next day or so and then make a decision. Just based on the emergency call screen, the contrast and angles seems better on the DX2.

rushmore....you are NOT making it any easier for me to hold off on waiting for any other phones. lol

I decided today that I dont care about LTE that much. ( I do care, just a lil tho...) I want it for the VoLTE more than anything else. I was already set for not caring about a FFC. And with rumors the GS2 on Verizon might not be LTE too, the only other LTE phone besides the Charge I was gonna be interested in was the one from Moto that will come out later this year.

Yea....most ppl that switched from Inc1's to DX1's last year already knew the reception was better. I really didnt expect that to change since the DX2 has the exact same build. If anything, I'm glad it does. I wonder does the length of the phone allow the Diversity Antennas to fit in. And I wanna know do other current and future Moto phones use the Diversity Antennas too.

DX2 is probably a good option now. But I bet that all eyes will be on SGSII and/or Bionic by Q3. I guess Motorola will be using TI OMAP4440 clocked at 1.5Ghz to pair with LTE in Bionic.

OMAP4440 is a BEAST, but earliest is late summer and almost certainly after the
tiered data kicks in. The performance jump from the Tegra 2 should not be as big as going from the 8655 to the Tegra 2- Point being the Tegra 2 is not a slacker.

Few more tidbits FWIW:

*Impressed with the DX2 and also noticed that the shape of the DX2 is easier to operate with one hand than the Rev & TB (almost exact same size).

*Display really pops out in a good way

*I actually liked this version Blur UI and may not bother with Launcher Pro (if buy the DX2)

*The DX2 I tested does not have all the funky demo stuff like Samsung devices have in store, so clean test for out of box. The app response, scrolling in UI were fast.

*I also installed Dolphin HD and Quadrant

Dolphin HD was very smooth
Quadrant averaged 2450

Using the DX2 compared to my Incredible literally seemed the same jump as going from my G1 to the Incredible- huge IMO.

Still want to test the Revolution, in case the display looks better after setting up and adjusting brightness. First impression is the Rev display is similar to the TB, but I could be wrong.

added:

One thing for sure, I luv the ability to wake the DX2 (DX1 does this too?) using the power AND home button. I do not like relying on one button. My Inc and most capacitive button Androids only wake with the power button.
