My OG Droid and Droid X have been dropped many, many times and have always worked perfectly. No cases or screen protectors ever. The screens still look flawless, but you can definitely see metal through the paint all around the chassis. The OG Droid looks like it has been to war, but works perfectly. I expect the Bionic to have this same build quality. Not freaking out every time my phone drops is awesome. I don't even pick it up right away most of the time, because I know it's fine.
On a side note, I had the Incredible for a little while and broke 2 of them from short falls right away. HTC's lack of build quality and the fact that the battery only lasts a couple hours, will keep me away from HTC for a very long time.
There are 3 Otterbox cases for it. Mine is on its way. I'll never have another phone without an Otterbox case.

Glass is funny stuff- it depends on the angle at which it hits - or something hits it, the thickness of the glass, temperature, etc.
I'll bet the Tab hit on it's corner (juuuuust right)
And because the screen is larger it's much more fragile than the Bionic. Although, I think the OGDroid was probably even safer, being smaller yet.
Gorilla glass is impact and scratch resistant, not -proof. No screen protector for me.
