Help Dropped phone, microSD no longer working...help!

Steve069

Lurker
Hey guys, I am a Motorola guy myself but I am also a computer nerd part time. My friend dropped her EVO the other day and her SD storage stopped working. Me being the computer nerd that I am told her I could get her data back off her microSD card, and I really wish I had not said that.

The card is seriously screwy now. Here is what I have tried:
1) Plugging the microSD card directly into my memory card reader unit mounted in my computer.
2) Putting the microSD into an SD adapter and putting that into my card reader unit mounted in my computer.
3) Putting the microSD into the USB converter right into the pc, the memory reader, etc. etc.

Ive tried everything. The chip will mount and windows will always detect it and show it in the explorer window. When I click it, it will scan...scan...and then lock up and then it will say no longer available or drive not accessible, etc. Then it removes itself.

I've tried to run a bunch of get back data programs and as soon as the program scans the USB drives, it disappears and the chip goes offline.

For some odd reason, only ONE TIME, windows explorer randomly opened up and showed me the contents of the chip and I could see all the folders on the card. When I tried to drag and drop onto the desktop, it locked up and then disappeared once again. I keep having to unplug it and put it back in, it shows up and then when I click it, it removes itself.

Any ideas? Is there a program that can force the chip to stay mounted other than disconnecting as soon as I click on it? I've tried doing a chkdsk but as soon as I hit enter, it removes itself and becomes no longer available.

thanks
Steve

first get out of GUI and go to CLI.
Install the card however you wish once the box comes up exit out and go to DOS.

try
chkdsk x: /f/r
replace x with actual drive letter
see if it will check the disk without loosing the disk.

either way successful or not you will also need testdisk and Photrec from cgisecurity (Get Windows 32 bit) Note these are CLI programs. testdisk will check partitions and can fix them and it can do some recovery but photorec is best for recovery.

If you are unable to do this in windows get a live linux cd and try doing it from linux.

Thanks for the response!

However, I've tried the chkdsk method, when I plug the card in and run it:
dos blinks for a few seconds, then says "cannot open drive for direct access" at this point it also will disappear from windows explorer.

Photorec does a similar thing..."scans for devices" then says the drive is not there when the results pop up. Only shows my HD & SSD. At this point it will disappear from explorer as well.

I'm pulling my hair out here!

give it a try in a linux live environment. Testdisk and Photorec are mulit platform programs so try them in those. if still a no go then sounds like the first sector is severly damaged and its toast.

explain to her that she needs to always have a fresh backup on her computer for issues such as this.

Thanks for your advice. I'm not familiar with linux (obviously I know what it is, but ive never used it, etc), is it possible to run it from a boot disc or do I need to dual boot with windows 7?

thanks

Tried to do a dual boot with ubuntu, kept getting a "fatal error" every time installing, whether it was with WUBI or using a boot disc install.

Looks like I'm done trying to fix this
