Root Dumb Kernel questions

ahdrom

Newbie
I've had a little bit of an adventure over the past few days. Most of it was failure and my fault. First, I tried out Express, kind of a nice rom, except for a few things that I just could not get to work no matter what I tried. No biggy I thought, I'll just wipe and flash Reloaded. Reloaded, to be honest, was not what I expected. It reminded me of Cupcake and Donut, which I had used on my first Android phone, a Samsung Moment, don't ask, lol. Anyway, I found it growing on me but there were a few things either I configured wrong or I just couldn't get them to work or I messed up. Either way, I decided to switch back to MikG v3.11 as I needed my phone working and not some crazy Frankenstein. With my partitioned SD card, I'm really loving it now. Down the road, I will give Reloaded another go and hopefully not switch again.

Anyway, now for my questions. Since I have MikG running with some apps installed and been using for over a day now, I got to wonder, is it too late to install a different kernel? If I need to reflash, I guess I do that. Which kind of leads to the next question. Which kernels should I consider that can play nice with MikG.

I have tried a few different Google searches but can't seem to find the answers I'm looking for. It's most likely I'm just not stating correctly what I'm looking for in Google. Also, I'm sorry for the wall of text and for probably asking something that's probably been asked before.

Hey there!
You can switch kernels anytime.
Just make sure the kernel is suited for your rom. Sense kernels for sense roms (MikG) and AOSP kernels for AOSP roms (Decks Reloaded)
I ran Anthrax kernel with MikG v3.11 and now that I am running Decks Reloaded, I run the Mason kernel (see my sig)
Just download kernel to phone and put on sd card, boot into recovery, wipe cache and dalvik cache, flash kernel, wipe cache and dalvik cache again, then reboot phone....
Let the kernel "settle" for a few days before judging it good or bad.:)
Another kernel for MikG is underworld
Both good kernels.
Here is a good write up for info about kernels for ya!
:D

Its always fun to try out different Kernels and its really suggested. Kernels react differently on each phone. On my case, Anthrax doesn't work that great on my EVO. Battery is not that great and I had camera issues (Phone freezing after 4 - 5 shots) while Underworld made wonders for me.

Just make sure to make a nandroid backup just in case things go bananas :p
And if ever something goes wrong, The people here in this forum are great and always ready to help out. I don't know how many times I messed my phone and still the threads and people here always saved saved my day :)

Along with the different kernels you can try, also using setcpu or something similar, try exploring with different governors, different min/max settings and i/o schedulers. These things can help out alot. With MikG, I always had the best experience with interactiveX governor, with sense roms I've always had to set min setting to 345 and max setting varies but I wouldn't set the max setting higher than 1150 and I wouldn't set the min setting lower than 245. As far as the i/o scheduler, I use sio or deadline.

Try these things out and hopefully you'll find a good sweet spot for your phone that allows great performance and great battery life:)

Thanks Mike. I knew I was trying the wrong Google search. You gave me exactly what I was looking for :)
I'll give kudos to Biker57 too.

I guess, I just freaked out when I had to recharge my phone 3x in a single day with light (I do mean light) usage. Seems my phone has calmed down and I nearly made through today on a single charge.

I think I will read the Kernels for Dummies before I do anything.

One other thing, Mike, I did take a peak at Reloaded, I really liked what I saw and look to forward playing with it some. I might even try that Black Ice ROM (it looks interesting). But all these ROMs does bring up some thing of an issue. Is it possible to make a nandroid backup of say MikG, do the wipes and install, say, Reloaded. Play with setting it up (I did notice a couple things that didn't work for me, that I want working). Then when I need to switch back, I just make a nandroid of the Reloaded, wipe and restore MikG and it'll be ok? Sorry for asking so many noob questions :( I just wish I had "discovered" rooting sooner, this stuff is sooo much fun for me!

You hit the nail on the head there!:)
Exactly as you stated, wipe and flash rom....Want to go back? Backup and then restore the other nandroid backup you have.
I just learned it is not necessary to wipe before a nandroid restore, it does that automatically, however, it does not hurt to wipe before a nand restore.
But yes, you are correct. :)
And also yes, ain't rooting fun?:D
