Dumbass CWM question

turbohobbit

Android Enthusiast
I've just tried running ClockworkMod on my GS2 in the same way as I did on my Desire, i.e. holding down the volume down and power on buttons simultaneously. However, instead of getting the screen I was expecting (white Hboot screen with scateboarding Androids) I got Samsung's Odin screen. What am I doing wrong? Or is this right? If so, how do I get from the Odin screen to CWM?

Apologies for the noobishness!

As long as you are rooted, to boot up into CWM recovery you need to hold VOL-UP+HOME+POWER together when the device is turned off.

You are booting into download mode, which is VOL-DOWN+HOME+POWER

Guys, really sorry but I think I need a bit of assistance here. Feel a bit stupid as I never had this issue with my rotted Desire, but there you go. Anyhoo....

I did the VOL-UP+HOME+POWER thing and the phone showed the Samsung startup text, then ran the following text:

--Copying media files...
Successfully copied media files.

# MANUAL MODE #

--Updating application...
Successfully updated application.

--Appling Multi-CSC...
Installing Multi-CSC
Can't access to '/system/csc/XEV/system/'
Successfully applied multi-CSC.

and at the top of the screen it says:

Android system recovery <3e>

Enter: OK Key, Select : Vol UP / Vol Down
reboot system now
apply update from sdcard
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition

This is only a fraction of the options I recall from CWM in the past, and certainly no mention of Backup/restore, and Advanced options. Figuring I'd missed something out, I rebooted and went into ROM Manager. The current CWM Recovery on the phone is apparently 4.0.1.5, although I'm not sure if I'd be better off installing 4.0.1.4 (or v4.0.1.4) from the "All ClockworkMod Recoveries section... Anyway, I selected "Reboot into Recovery", the phone restarted as before and I got the following text:

-- Installing package...
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:failed to verify whole-file signature
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.

Again, at the top of the screen was the blue text/options as above.

So, any suggestions about what I need to do or what I'm doing wrong? Please let me know as I'd like to get flashing!!

Cheers!

You dont have CWM installed, just stock android system recovery. How did you root the phone? I'm assuming you're rooted?

Yeah, I'm rooted. I used Odin3. So I:

1) Downloaded Odin, S3, and an unstable kernel from XDA onto my PC
2) Ran Odin, connected my phone, and installed the unstable kernel
3) Ran S3 and rooted my phone
4) Downloaded a stable kernel
5) Ran Odin again and installed the stable kernel to get rid of the yellow triangle at bootup.

I'm definately rooted as I have Superuser and I'm running things like Adfree, Titty, etc without problems...

I'm not sure if that method of rooting installs CWM. Try using CF-root method instead, this will install CWM.
Or alternatively you could go with a different kernel like Siyah, this would also install CWM

Have you tried installing a new CWM version from Rom manager?

Top bombing, thanks guys.

I'll try and use a legacy version of CWM4 from Rom Manager first, and if that doesn't work I'll flash the CF-Root kernel via Odin. Once I have CWM I'll flash Siyah. If I read you correctly Siyah has CWM4 wrapped up in it?

Also if you are planning on removing the yellow triangle dont forget to flash the zIamge from siyah zip file after flashing a stock kernel.
