E-Bikes

It was quite a bit cooler and very windy from the North today. I rode twice to the town South and then rode around here in town which has some shelter from the gusty wind. I only logged 34 miles and saw only one other rider. It was a young teen and he was on an e-bike. I though it odd that I saw three different people riding on e-scooters today. It was after school was let out. Two riders were definitely riding home from school and the third was likely the father with his young son also heading home from school. There was an enterprise renting e-scooters here in town a couple of years ago. They were all over the city. I think you bought a pre paid card to insert to ride. Leave it wherever you liked and pick another to ride. It must have not been profitable for they were here then gone. The ones I saw today looked to be privately owned. They are rare to see and weird to see three in a half hour span.
 
By the time I had punched the ticket on all of the tasks I had planned it was in the afternoon. I made one loop to the town South and came home and put my dinner in the smoker. I made another loop to the town South and tended to my meat in the smoker and then rode a couple of times around town and then put my bike up. I only logged 30 miles but had a great time and didn't burn my dinner.:) It was cooler again today and was still windy from the North. Tomorrow is supposed to be warm. I'll be riding once I get home from my late AM cardiologist appointment.
 
Today was much like yesterday. The high exceeded the forecast and the wind was gusty from the North. I rode 33 miles and called it a day. I saw only two riders in town and one on the sidewalk South. It wasn't ideal riding weather and a week day. I suspect I'll see more tomorrow. It's too nice to be roosting inside.
 
Yesterday was not much better for riding. I again logged 33 miles and came home to warm up. It was so lousy that I saw nobody riding. I didn't think it was show stopping weather and my buddy with my old bike didn't either. I guess we are addicts. :) The high today is to be 60° with a 16 mph wind.
 
I was the only diehard riding today. 24 miles and I was done. It was cold and it was windy. I logged a 47 mph gust while I was out riding. Glad I rode but it was more work than fun today.
 
It was simply too crummy to ride yesterday. It only reached the mid fifties again today but there was very little wind. It was cloudy and rain was in the forecast but the radar wasn't intimidating so I rode. I bundled up and headed South. I no more reached the town South and it started sprinkling. I beat it back North and was soon out of the rain. I decided I'd continue to ride but close to home in case it started raining again. It didn't take long and I had to ride home after only riding fifteen miles. It was better than not riding at all.

The color display my buddy and I have ordered have arrived in the USA. First they flew into Los Angeles and then to Dallas. It then went to Grand Prairie where it awaits being assigned a USPS tracking number. I'm starting to have faith it will actually show up sometime. :)
 
The weather exceeded the forecast so I had to do my riding around smoking some ribs for dinner. I rode some, came home and attended my cook, went riding again only to cut it short to remove my cook to rest. It was a hassle but well worth it. It was a beautiful afternoon with nearly no wind and zero clouds. I only rode 22 miles but it sure felt great!

The colored display I have ordered is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I'm excited to hook it up and hope it is more viewable in the sunlight. I'm really hoping it fixes my old bike's problem of not being able to change assist levels for my buddy. I never had a minutes problem with the display but my buddy didn't ride 100 miles before it showed up. Made me feel bad. I sold the bike so cheap that he can afford to fix it and lots of other problems that might crop up. :)

added.. With daylight savings time, I was able to ride some more after dinner. I managed another 18 miles before the sun was low enough that I was getting chilled.

The new display was delivered just before noon. It took no time at all to physically install it and the setup was plenty easy. It wasn't long before I was out riding and testing the display. It is a huge upgrade. Not only is there more information being displayed but it can be easily seen in full daylight.

The third box down on the left is a trip odometer. It is reflecting the miles I rode before dinner. There is no option to eliminate this display item and resetting it requires a short combination of buttons to access the settings, then scroll to the trip, and then toggle a reset to clear it back to zero. I know there has to be an easier reset. The old display could show total miles or a trip. A two button hold would reset which ever was being displayed. I never used the trip odometer. Being as Juiced is gone and not many upgrade displays in use, I can't find any information. I'll figure it out or I'll find somebody that has. Beyond that, I'm super happy with the upgrade.

For a Monday, I saw quite a few riders today. It was a super nice day to be riding. I logged 66 miles of fun today.
 
It was a dandy day to be bike riding. I wasn't the only one taking advantage of the warm weather with very little wind. On my third loop to the town South, by buddy text and asked if I could help him get his display settings correctly set up. I came home and stepped him through the procedure and advised him my preferences on some of the variables. Once he was good to go, I changed batteries and went riding again. I went around another three times and then a few times around my mini in town loop for a 67 mile total. My buddy text me later and said he loved the new display and it fixed his changing assist level problems.
My second time riding was after school was out and I again saw quite a few e-scooters. They seem to be quite popular. I can see where they would be a lot of fun and an easy mode of transportation for kids too young to drive. There isn't much exercise going on in their riding. :)

Dang.... that's a bummer. We need rain in the worst way. We are entering into the second year of what they have labeled extreme draught. It is dry and we've had a few grass fires. Not huge fires but spots along the roads where careless smokers have tossed there butts. We are on restricted scheduling for lawn watering. Once a week everyone gets a 12 hour window to save their lawn.

It was super nice here again today. I was doing projects early and only got in a 42 mile ride. It was all I could get out of my old battery. I came home and called it a day. There is still daylight to ride but a battery's worth is a good ride. I hope to double battery my riding tomorrow.
 
Great riding weather once again. I spent the morning servicing my mowers and getting the string trimmers and blowers ready for action. It was after one PM before I was able to ride. I rode until school was out and came home... relaxed a bit and changed batteries and then riding again. I ended the day after 62 miles of fun.
It seems odd to me that I'll see women of all ages out walking for exercise but if I see a man walking it will be an old fart like me. I also thought what the hell when I rode up behind a guy in his twenties by my guess riding an e-bike. I rode along behind him for over a half mile before he turned off. He never once pedaled. What's the point of riding a bike if you don't pedal some? I might coast while going down hill at times but I never just cruise.
The bike has a cruise control and I made sure it worked day one with the bike. I have no idea how to turn it on now.... don't need to know.
 
It finally returned to riding weather this afternoon and I had a scheduled meeting with my CPA. I rode before and after the meeting for a 56 mile total.
It was great to be riding again! I met a dad and his three kids on my ride South on the sidewalk. The little guy leading the pack was likely five or six and he was pedaling his ass off. An older sister and brother were next with pop's bringing up the rear. They all looked like they were having a blast.

I'm guessing there is some small rechargeable battery in the new display. After not riding for three days, the clock on the controller still was keeping time. I love this feature. It takes both hands to shade the face of my smartwatch so that I can see the time. The display watch is so handy and easily seen. It will help me to adjust my rides to miss the school traffic in the two school zones I ride through numerous times a day.
 
It was too cold to ride this morning and naturally as the the temps ramped up, so did the wind. There were fire hazard and high wind warning for this afternoon through tomorrow afternoon. Being as snow is forecasted for tomorrow, I decided to ride some in spite of the wind. I only rode one loop to the the town South and did the rest of my riding in town where there is a little wind break. I did not see anyone out riding or walking this afternoon. It was that crummy. Currently it is 70° with a South wind at 22 mph. The top gust logged by my station was 61.5 mph.
 
I rode today but took the weather app serious and rode when it was to be the warmest and most calm part of the afternoon. It was windy from the North with gusts nearing the 40 mph range. I rode just once to the town South and battled my way back home. I rode around my area and called it a ride after thirty miles. My app lied. It warmed up and calmed down after I came home.
I was the only rider out today.
 
Today was warmer and the wind was out of the South. There were a few serious riders out this afternoon and I saw one e-bike. It wasn't ideal but it was better riding weather than we've had lately. I rode 35 miles and then washed my bike when I was done. It was filthy.
 
The weather was crummy Sunday but today was nice riding weather. There was some wind from the South West but it wasn't a show stopper. I mowed three lawns, cleaned up, and went riding. I likely saw ten cyclist out today. Two were e-bikes and looked to be exactly the same and were riding together. That's a pretty high number considering it's a week day. I rode three loops to the town South and finished off my ride here in town. I logged 36 miles and enjoyed the warm weather and sunshine.
 
It was nice riding weather today. I finished up my lawns and went riding. I started my second return from the town South when dark clouds suddenly appeared and the wind came up from the North. It felt like the temperature fell ten degrees and I wasn't dressed for the change. I rode home and put my bike up. I noted that it was 66° and a North wind gust of 23.9 mph had been logged. I grabbed a brew and changed into my street clothes. I went out to curb my trash and it was clear sky and warm. I checked my station again... it was now 78°. Crazy!
 
I rode 39 miles today. It was mid seventies weather with very little wind. I saw a few cyclists in town but didn't see any while riding to the town South and back. It will be a different story this weekend if the weather stays this nice.

I ordered a bike work stand tonight. I must have a brake that's rubbing and I need to get the bike off of the ground so that the wheels can freely rotate. I'm only getting 40 miles out of a fully charged battery. I have ropes inside my shed that I pull my bike off of the ground to fix flats. The light in my shed is not good enough to see the clearance between brake pads and rotor. I can set this up outside and and should be able to find and fix the culprit. Besides, it will make fixing a flat a whole lot easier.

It sprinkled off and on most of the morning so I was late mowing and even later riding. By the time I went riding, it had warmed up nicely but was very windy. My buddy said it was just too windy for him and I'll admit it was nearly bad enough to keep me home. I only rode 31 miles and had to force myself to do my last loop to the town South. Needless to say, I saw no other cyclists today.
The work stand I have ordered is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. I'm looking forward to putting it together and putting it to use. I'm particularly anxious to see how steady it holds my heavy bike.
 
I received the bike stand this morning. It was well engineered and assembly was a snap. I'm glad that it is duty rated for one hundred pounds because my seventy pound bike was pushing it's limits. It wasn't about to fail but is a bit wobbly when weight loaded. My one complaint is that the gripping jaw just barely accommodates my top bar. Holding seventy pounds about chest high while trying to get the bar into the jaw is a challenge for this old man. Once I had it in the stand, I was able to position the bike so that I could get a great look at the clearance of the brake pads and rotor. Adjusting is easy once you can see if and where it's rubbing.

I was on my second loop to the town South when I noticed a drag in the bike beyond the strong South wind. I stopped and inspected and my back tire was going flat. I aired it up and rode home logging only 16 miles. I once again force fed the bike into the stand jaw and removed the back tire. That's flat number six in 12K miles and all six have been the back tire. The tire was quite easy to remove with the bike on the stand. Once repaired I found it was not so easy to replace the tire. I believe it is easier to install with the bike upside down... but I've had practice that way. Trying to lift the heavy fat tire and hub motor up into the receiver while holding the derailleur out of the way and then tightening the nuts while holding it in place proved to be a hard and awkward task. I'll try it one more time with my next flat before I go back to flipping the bike.

While I had the back wheel off, I noticed just how much grime there was on the back gear rings. I don't have any chain cleaner. I have been using wet lubricant and rag it off now and then. I took some of my two stoke gas and a brass brush and put the super clean on it as well as the two sprockets of the derailleur. Once I was through working on the bike, I ordered a chain cleaning kit and some new lube. I'm going with some dry lube this time around.
 
The brake adjustments were warranted. It gained me 7 more miles on a charge and it was very windy today. A calm day should be even better miles per charge. I'm glad I got that done. While it was too cool to ride this morning, I remodeled my new bike stand. It has a pipe within a pipe with a quick clamp for adjusting the height. It's designed for most all bikes. Being as I'm clamping onto the down tube just in front of the seat post I had to lift the bike up about 15" to get it onto the clamp when the stand was on it's lowest setting. I cut 9.5 inches off of the tube inside the tube. That lowered my lift by 9.5 inches and still holds the bike off of the ground around 5 inches. It can be adjusted to be higher if needed... but most the time this lower setting will work just fine. I don't anticipate needing to accommodate another bike so I'll not miss the nine inches that it will no longer raise to. And..... (drum roll) I'll only be lifting the back tire 5 inches or less when I'm changing a flat.

I rode 42 miles today. The wind wasn't any fun from the South. Blowing in the high teens per hour and a max gust at my station of 41 mph. I saw no cyclists on my loops down South and back. I did see a young couple with identical e-bikes riding in town. I will meet them sometime for a visit instead of just catching a glimpse of them here and there. I don't want to chase them down but that might be the only way to say hello. I've seen them three of four times now. They obviously are enjoying their bikes.

It was extra nice and the wind had died down after dinner so I went riding again. Naturally, I was half way to the town South when the wind came up from the NW, the clouds rolled in, and the temperature fell. I rode another 18 miles and called it a day.

Yesterday just wasn't the day to be riding. It was cool today but there was very little wind so it was a decent afternoon. I mowed my lawns this afternoon and didn't ride until after dinner. It was starting to cool off but I was needing some bike time. I only rode 24 miles and saw no other riders or anyone out for that matter.
I received the bike chain cleaning tool tonight. There isn't a reason to clean the chain until I receive the dry lube I have ordered. I'm anxious to give the chain and sprockets a thorough cleaning and new lube. I can shamefully say that it has not had that sort of cleaning in nearly 11,000 miles. Suggested strip and lube every 100 to 150 miles. I have maintained my chain with a rag off and new lube that often just as I have treated all of my bikes. I've never completely cleaned one. It's about time. :)
