E-Bikes

It was hot and it was humid and it was windy today. By the time I was finished mowing my lawns, I was soaked. I came home and cooled off for a few. I knew I wasn't going to get to ride tonight because I wanted to watch the Chiefs play the Broncos. I only rode 34 miles and had to work at that. There was nobody on the sidewalk.... for a reason. We set a new record high for Wichita today. It was that hot. It is also the hottest September on record so far. I was glad I got in a good ride but I've suffered leg cramps tonight. Brutal weather!

Today started out much like yesterday.. a bit on the miserable side. I went riding after my lawns were mowed. The wind had somewhat laid down and the sidewalk was calling my name. As I was riding North on my return leg of my loop, I could see that the clouds were getting darker with lightening. I decided I would just ride on home and hope to ride some later. I had the bike in the shed and was in the house when the rains hit. It rained .64" before it quit. I fixed dinner and ate early with intentions of riding some more. The sky looked a bit threatening but the radar in motion projected that the rains would be in my area around seven PM. I made one loop to the town South and then hurried home. I almost made it before it really dumped the rain. Only about forty five minutes early. I was soaked and all but shivering when I got into the house. Between the two rains, 2.11" has fallen at my station. It could rain some more before it completely moves out of my area. I only rode 27 miles today. I did good to get in that many miles. I saw nobody on the sidewalk today.

I had to wait for the grass to dry some before mowing after the 3.42" rain of last night. I thought seriously about riding but I ran into Wichita instead. I was out of the Darjeeling tea I brew and seriously addicted to. :) I came home, mowed my lawns, and fixed dinner early. I went riding following dinner and logged 42 miles. I shared the sidewalk with the runner I've mentioned. He was doing his thing while I was doing mine. There wasn't any other traffic on the sidewalk. I found a quarter and a pair of garden shears on the sidewalk today.

I mowed my lawns, cooled off and cleaned up, and ran to the North end of Wichita to visit a site that might provide a foster home for our kittens and mom cat. And then see that they are adopted by good homes. The place was closed. No idea why when their online info proclaimed they are open until five PM. It was too late to ride when I got home so I started dinner early and rode afterwards. I only rode 27 miles and put the bike up. I didn't want to mess up my stress test tomorrow by drinking my electrolyte and I didn't want leg cramps. It was hot and there was only one young lady riding her bike on the sidewalk.

That is the one type of liner that I've not tried. The liner I'm currently using is a tough layer between tube and tire. It is difficult to install and difficult to put into place while exchanging tubes on the highway. It is like a twenty dollar per tire protection where the liner in the video is a seventy five dollar liner. The liner in the video has a 3/8 barrier between tube and tire. The liner I'm using just has its nominal thickness and material. All of the road junk I've pulled out of my tire is over 3/8 inches long. Thorn proof for certain but nails, screws, bolts, staples, and yard ornament stakes that have caused my flats are all over 3/8" in length. I have also read that they are tricky to install, require an undersized tube, add considerable weight, and give the tire a dead feeling on the road. With all of that said, I may have to try that liner. My sidewalk only ride is boring.

I got in a couple of rides today. When I finally got home from my stress test I had a bit of lunch and then went riding. I went North from my location and rode into the South part of Wichita. There is a sidewalk that I rode once years ago that goes a few miles North and dumps out onto a busy four lane. I tried to make a loop out of it and finally made my way back home. Today I revisited that ride. I rode West on that four lane which has been reduced to two because of construction, and then into the park that I didn't realize was there. The park was a landfill sixty years ago and now has paths and a doggie park and a drone flying area. The main path wraps around the area that once was two drive in theaters and now is one. I took that path and then the sidewalk headed North across the river and then it dead ended at the entrance ramp to one of the freeways. I googled it up tonight and see that there is a lot more riding I could have and will try to do. Just across the bridge, google maps shows the sidewalk takes a quick right turn and another right turn and goes under the bridge and along side the river. The river and sidewalk wind around to the North and West. Basically a mile each direction. Then it looks like I will need to go South across the river at that bridge and then under that bridge and continue NW on the West side of the river. Though I've not ridden on the sidewalk heading into downtown Wichita, I am quite familiar with it. The four lane that runs along side the river goes to downtown and the ball park where I spent countless nights watching baseball. The river has a low water dam so there is always a full river and kept grass and shrubs and fountains and the like. I'd love to ride up there but not badly enough to haul my bike up there and ride. If I can get up there and ride some on a half battery, it would be a ball if I can get home on the bottom half. :)

That's the good stuff and you might see that I'm excited to do some exploring. However, there are a lot of negatives to heading North from my location. I have to cross every mile between here and there on busy four lanes. I found that crossing at the light almost works. I get the walk signal but cars don't give a damn and they are turning right on red and will run a person down. I found that just about every intersection I crossed that you just have to jump out there and hope for the best. None of the line of cars are stopping before they go as the the right turn on red is supposed to be done. I hate dangerous!

I rode again tonight. It was hot and windy and very boring. I vowed I would ride/walk my bike down the highway siding tomorrow and toss all of the flat makers I find in the grass. After my google search of the extended sidewalk North, I might explore that tomorrow. I think the weekends might be the best time, traffic wise, to get from point A to point B and back without getting ran over. I've got to do something. Extend my ride or clean my path. I can't do the back and forth much longer.

I saw a young family on the sidewalk today. Mom, Pop with a baby trailer, and little man in front. He was pedaling a hundred miles an hour on his little bike but he was the pace setter. Damn cute! They were the only people I saw. I logged 72 miles.

I rode three times today. None of the rides drained a battery. I was trying to be productive and entertained and wasn't working at riding hard. I headed South on the sidewalk and then rode as slow as I could, without falling over, back to town on the state highway siding. I stopped and tossed anything that looked like it could cause a flat. That took almost an entire hour. I then rode my old loop two more times and came home and had some lunch and a couple of brews. I was surprised at the small amount of potential piercing debris I found. I might have missed some but it is as clean as I can get it without walking the four plus miles with my backpack blower.

I was feeling so chipper after my morning's work that I suited up and went riding again.
This time I headed North and followed the route I described last night. Google maps left some areas a mystery but I had it figured / guessed correctly. Once I crossed the river using the bridge, the sidewalk indeed took a loop under the bridge and I was on the West bank of the river. I rode North a couple of miles and then turned around and rode back home. There was a stiff South wind I would have to battle on my return leg and I didn't want to run short of battery.

It was fun riding where I had never been before. The sidewalk along the East side of the river is mostly wooded. It is pretty secluded and sad to say it has its share of bums or gypsies or whatever label you want to put on the homeless. I didn't see dire scenarios. In fact, one guy looked up from his family size sack of potato chips and waved at me with his Bud Light bottle. He was sitting in his underwear only and looked quite pleased. Looking beyond the inhabitants, it was an interesting ride. The land, I'm guessing, floods now and then. It is low and basically left untouched and undeveloped beyond the sidewalk, the river, the band of trees, and an old railroad track. The sidewalk makes good use of the land and for the most part it is well kept. As I rode out of the wooded area there was a housing addition to the East. They were kept a safe distance from the river. I rode beside a meadow that had been mowed. Once I was on the West side of the river there was some development. There is a very old park I rode beside. I also rode by a complex of maybe ten or more volley ball courts in the sand from the river. It was a fun to ride that stretch and I plan to ride it when it isn't so windy and with my best battery. I was only three miles South of the cool stuff downtown. I'd like to see some of the statues and the keeper of the plains monument. There is a lot to see in town. I was just afraid I might run short of battery getting home or I'd have done a bit more exploring today.

I rode again tonight. Weather was threatening so I only made one loop and came home.
I logged 69 miles today

I plan to go riding when I finish my morning coffee. It is far from cold outside but I will need a bit more clothing than yesterday to comfortably ride. The high temp predicted for today is less than the low temp yesterday. It is only 68° right now. It will seem cold with the sudden change. There was nothing cool about yesterday. It was fine while riding but the instant I stopped, I would break out into a sweat.

I was going to ride into Wichita this morning and elongate my ride of yesterday. However, my son has invited me over to watch football this afternoon. He has the sports package which I refuse to pay for. Though I long to do that ride, spending time with my son trumps it. I plan to ride my newly cleaned loop a number of times this morning. It is fun to just ramp up the pedal cadence on the return leg of the loop and just ride. No worries, no traffic, just booking down the road at around 26 mph. I have missed that ride.
