Ear Piece Paint ???

Here is what my Ear Piece looks like. Notice the silver showing at the bottom. It looked this way after only about 2 weeks of use.

I've had two, and both started to wear withing the first two weeks. I like the idea of wiping off the rest of the paint and making it completely silver. Might do that tonight.

Just a thought here. But where does all of that paint or paint dust go when you rub it off? I'm certain at least some if not a majority of it goes in behind the screen directly on top of the speaker. I wonder if that will have any effects on the speaker itself short or long term.

If that starts with mine, I'll just dye it black with my laundry marker.

But what is interesting is that even though I am on my phone several times per day, I have as yet seen no rubbing off of the original black on that little grill over the ear-piece.

I'm wondering if there are many others who have not.. makes me question the quality control at the manufacturer if there are some Eris devices not and some that are losing their coating at that spot.

I noticed this on mine last month and was kind of annoyed by it. I'm gonna try rubbing the rest of it off since I'll probably like it better, looking more uniform I guess. How long did it take? I just tried for about a minute or so and I don't seem to notice a difference yet...

Yes, my phone's paint is peeling off too in only 1 month. I am on my second Eris because the Big Red rep actually swapped out my phone for the You Tube app not working. The quality of the paint job is definately sub-par and shouldn't be peeling. You don't see the paint on your car peeling off and that is outside subjected to the elements. :)

Am I the only one who cannot get any of the black to rub off on the ear-piece grill?

I haven't taken sandpaper to it, but I did try to rub it off with my finger, real hard, a piece of dry cloth, a shammy and a woven place mat here on this table.

I'm wondering if I got lucky or if there is a difference having to do with the release of the phone; I've seen other problems posted in here that don't show up on this Eris, mostly about lag and about the OS freezing up, etc.

??

I used an old tshirt. You have to use a fair amount of pressure. Took about 15 minutes to get it all off.

Seems most people are having this problem ... I too have some paint rubbed off. Seems like a strange problem for a lot of people to have.

I bought to Eris phones and in less then a month they both have paint coming off the earpiece. One just around the edges (mine) and the other (gfs) the whole piece. I bought this phone over the droid for a number of reasons, a primary being the looks so this is very disappointing. I called Verizon about it and the rep (Alisha rep#466000) looked at a coworkers, saw it had the same problem and said that phones should be expected to wear like that. WTF? My iPhone never wore like that and they are priced the same. Using a sharpie to cover up blemishes on a phone less then 1month old is unacceptable. I treat my phone well, this is obviously an issue with the paint or the way the paint is applied.

She gave me a number to call HTC at (866-449-8358) which I'll do tomorrow. I'd also like to complain to the consumerist and maybe some other sites (engadget etc...). Post photos, review it on Verizons website and lets make a stink. I'm not getting locked into a 2 year contract for a defective phone.

I don't think you are going to have much of a case, all things considered.

You cite the iPhone and how it never wore like that. Issue is, the iPhones do wear. All generations have had the issue on the back of the phone getting scratched up by putting it in your pocket. Keys of course exacerbated the issue, but simple wear was leaving markings on the back of the iPhone.

Apple's response was wear and tear on the phone and to prevent it, use a case.

I have a feeling HTC is going to respond the same. Paint wear is going to happen on a heavily used device like a cell phone.

Coincidentally, I was just noticing this happening today on mine as well. That's a drag.

I'm still waiting for paint deterioration on mine; it's still just black.

Some here with the problem have posted that they are just removing all of the black from the grill and it looks fine to them as a sort of silver color.

If mine starts to wear off I'll cover it with a water-proof marker ("laundry pen") in flat black.

I have a few day old Eris, only made 2 calls on it so far and it already has some of the black paint missing from the ear piece. I'm going to wait for it to wear off a little more and try to use a gun bluing touch up pen and blue the metal back to black.

(wondering if I should edit in a "lol" or smiley up there... nah, she's laughing right now)

I used 600 grit SandWet to get the black off of mine. It was wearing so badly, and just made the phone look worse. It's all silver now and looks fantastic. I'd post a picture but I won't have my camera till next week.

So, does this qualify as pimping your Eris?

Dont see anyone posted a pic with it all off so here is mine sans black. All same, just different lighting, flash/no flash.
