Root Easiest 2.3.4 root?

I want to root my Droid Incredible 2 running android 2.3.4. I want to know a few things:

-Does the HTC Super Tool v3 work?
-How do i backup my phone to the computer/what should i use to do so?
-If the Super Tool doesnt work, whats the next easiest method?
-How do i flash custom ROMS?
-What is a Recovery? Kernal?

Thanks

You don't need to worry about kernels yet. Recovery is a program that runs without Android that gives you the ability to backup up and restore your current setup so you can recover from a bad ROM flash. ROMs are flashed from recovery.

What is S-Off?

From Addictivetips.com:
"In a nutshell, S-OFF means that the NAND portion of the device is unlocked and can be written to. The default setting for HTC’s devices is S-ON, which means that neither can you access certain areas of the system nor can you guarantee a permanent root. Furthermore, signature check for firmware images is also ensured by the S-ON flag."
"... this security level is a flag stored on the device’s radio that checks signature images for any firmware before it is allowed to be written to system memory. This hinders using any custom ROMs, splash images, recovery etc., and also restricts access to the NAND flash memory. However, when security level is set to S-OFF, the signature check is bypassed, allowing a user to upload custom firmware images, unsigned boot, recovery, splash and HBOOT images, as well as official firmware that has been modified, this enabling maximum customization of your HTC Android device.

Furthermore, S-OFF also reduces restrictions on accessing the NAND flash memory on the device, allowing all partitions (including /system) to be mounted in write mode while the operating system is booted."

Im not new to android, but when it comes to rooting, im clueless. I downgraded my ipod touch and jailbroke it with ease. But obviously android is different. Ive tried downgrading from 2.3.4-2.3.3 and it didnt work. I also tried to use the HTCDEV.COM unlock tool. That didnt work either. I did step by step for each one and it still didnt work. I also tried the video on how to downgrade. Wont work. I am convinced that i want to root. Mainly for ROMS. But idk what to do. Can someone try to help?

Did you see any error messages? Did you verify that adb can see your phone? Can you mount the phone as a drive on your computer?

K. So downgrading didnt work for me, neither did htc unlock bootloader. Comment if you have found/used an easy 2.3.4 root method

It said cant find specified pathway

Are you seeing this when attempting to downgrade to 2.3.3? At which step are you seeing this message? If you can attach a screen capture. It would help us to help you. Get as detailed as possible to give us a better idea of what might be going on.

I wouldn't worry about using the HTC method. This does not give you S-Off

I don't know the nitty-gritty of using Android SDK or adb, so you'll have to hope valorian or bberry can help you with error messages. How far did you get with the HTC method before you got the error? Were you able to get the key string?

What I can says is that unless HTC recently changed something with their phones (which is unlikely since the phone you have was probably built/shipped 6 months ago) your are overlooking something. I'm not trying to be a jerk but I've used the HTC unlock process and it worked fine for me. And then I relocked my phone and used the used the downgrade and revolutionary method and that worked for me too. There are some very small/strange steps which you my have glossed over and not noticed like turning off itunes and other media players or installing HTC Sync and then uninstalling it right away, or not turning off your virus real-time scanning, or not running command line as an admin. These are all small things that can easily be forgotten about. I will say that the HTC method has a few steps that were slightly different than what I had to do. This mostly had to do with HTC's listed SDK directories having slightly different names than the directories on my computer.

Im in school right now lol, sorry for not responding earlier. After i get out of school, i will post step by step with some screen shots of me trying to downgrade from 2.3.4 to 2.3.3 by using the video on YouTube. I will wait for someone to comment if im doing it right or wrong before going to the second step. Thanks for the support and patience guys!!
