Easy tether and PdaNet question for connecting to xbox live

ok my friend and I found pda net on the droid market and we were thrilled to know we could get internet where we live cause we live in the middle of no where and i looked alll around to use pdanet for xbox live we tried to tether them but since his xp laptop thinks the connections a dial up modem we cant tether em then i got easytether but that dosent work either it dosent connect to the internet and we almost had it work on the xbox but it said needed better mtu settings so is there someone who can plz help me ive tried everything but nothing has worked.

Well I don't want to risk bricking my phone and I want to keep my warranty isent there a wireless tether for ppl who don't root?

Until 2.2 goes mainstream, I don't think you're gonna be able to do that unless you root.

Also, there are horror stories popping up about VZW limiting and canceling accounts due to excessive tethering....

Actually I haven't read any stories of that I saw a huge argument over this and the only story they had was a person who tethered had to pay like 2 dollars it was on this site on tethering can't remember the post

have tethered and used pda net and played halo online in a motel because their internet was down, but must have good 3g because will reflect internet speed. I did do this prior to the 2.1 update...but have not since...let me know what youcome up with.

I think you're gonna have a hard time getting people to help you. I'm sorry that you have trouble getting a good internet connection where you live but breaking your contract and using your 3G data connection in a way you aren't supposed to is going to have a knock on affect. The more people do it, the more inclined Verizon is to crack down and start limiting our data plans.

I don't know how to fix your problem but even if I did I wouldn't tell you.

Whoa pardner, your SERIOUSLY going to try and game with your phones internet connection? Don't you think VZW will be able to notice the sudden data surge on your account and red flag it? Tell ya what, why don't you do a few torrent movies and such while your at it..

If I tether my phone to my mac using pdanet through USB, enable internet sharing in os/x, tell it to share PDAnet's modem driver using Wifi it works perfect.

On the PS3 I had to add the DNS IP address of my phones IP in the playstations advanced networking settings.

This should work the same for windows with internet sharing.

You know, I have to agree with nstallion (and many others) in that you really should not try to use your Xbox with your Droid Data plan. Not only are you going to get caught and be in a whole new world of hurt, but your ruining everything for the rest of us. We already have to worry about Verizon putting caps on our data plans because AT&T did. But with so many people tethering in irresponsible and stupid ways, it may happen faster than we want it to.

Please, please tether responsibly. You're not just hurting yourself, but your hurting those of us that tether for emergency purposes only. I tether when I'm at my girlfriends house ONLY if I absolutely have to. And then, I only use 10-20 MB while tethering. That is responsible use.

I'm telling you right now, when (not if) you get caught, you will be sorry you ever even though of tethering your phone to you Xbox. And then, I promise you, you will be flamed on this forum when Verizon caps our data plan simply for mentioning that you tethered your phone to your Xbox.

So please, just forget that you ever had the thought and don't even try to tether your phone to your Xbox.

Ive had success using xbox live with pdanet. You need to allow sharing of the dialup connection to other computers. I think you get to this thru properties. I am away from my home computer right now, so not 100% on how to get there. than just connect xbox to ethernet port and you should be good to go. One hurtle I had to over come was it wasn't recognizing my connection. I had to disable my firewall/virus protection.

Hopefully that helps.

Edit***I do agree with other posters though that this is not a wise thing to do. I did it just to d/l a small game for my kids. Actually using it to play games on Live is not the best idea and i imagine it wouldn't be very effective anyway.

Honestly I hope everyone who is using tether for things like xbox360, ps3, other intensive online game, and torrents gets caught.

Right now tethering is something that vzw does not seem to be heavily monitoring and is great for times when I need to get my laptop online but have no wifi. Using for things like those listed above is simply abuse and is going to cause vzw to start to monitor usage. Not only could it ruin tethering for everyone but stuff like this is most likely part of the reason that vzw plans on getting rid of unlimited data plans in the future.

Xbox Live takes up less bandwidth then Pandora or Youtube bud. You use maybe 15 MB an hour. Just as long as you aren't hosting a game, which you shouldn't anyway because cellular internet is much less reliable.

xbox live does a lot more than simply play games. You can download games and add ons to games and stream netflix. Lots of games also have required updates before you can even play them online which can be up to 500mb. I also think your 15mb per hour is a pretty low estimation

ok quick question, Not that I teather. But what If you have the unlimited data plan?

There really is no such thing as true unlimited. If they see you're taking advantage of the service they will bill you for the usage. I think there is a 3-5GB cap on the "unlimited" plan.

Incorrect.

If you have a legitimate wireless broadband data plan (designed for use with USB wireless data adapters) then the cap is 5GB.

There is no cap on our wireless data for smartphones plan. You can download as much as you want using your Droid and that's just fine. However, any data usage through tethering is against the terms of your contract.

Just to add to what nstallion has said, even though our unlimited data plan is unlimited, it is thought that 5GB is the point at which Verizon will start monitoring your account to see if you are tethering. So, if you use 25GB of data in one month (very unlikely w/o tethering, but not impossible), Verizon will look at your data usage. If they find that your are using data from anything other than your Droid, all hell will break loose.

Kind of wierd that 2.2 will support tethering, and a hotspot feature. Dont really understand why verizon gots these phones that support it.

I don't tether. I don't watch my data usage (mostly audio, no video). I just looked at my bill and every single month I've had this droid I've been under 1 GB. Almost all of them I was under 500 MB. I think it would be pretty easy to spot who's tethering and who's not. Just sayin'
