Engadget Review!

i never thought i would see the day where engadget of all places would come out and say an android phone is better than the iphone. samsung you did well

ENGADGET HOLY CRAP said:
For a handset with such a broad range of standout features and specs, the Galaxy S II is remarkably easy to summarize. It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period.

yeah their review was awesome. i'd give up a testicle for this phone right now lol def my next device, no doubt.

Really nice job from Samsung. I was hopeful but was a bit skeptical too given what they did with RFS, TouchWiz on Galaxy S. Seems like they really listened to customers for SGSII. Now that they entered into development of SGSIII for next year which is twice more powerful than SGSII, I think they are on track to displace HTC from the dominant Android player.

A testicle? Hell no it ain't worth THAT much. :p

I don't know about HTC being at the top of the mountain. Never heard mention of a handset of theirs selling 14 million like the Galaxy S. They definitely have way more Android devices, but not a sole flagshp device that sells at that level. Also gotta remember the tech dorks are the loudest on the interwebs, so it will be skewed toward HTC, because cute Korean girls don't obsess over their phones online.

yep, a testicle :D haha
but i think the above poster was referring to HTC as a handset manufacturer. right now they're on top, or at least above Samsung in that department. they've (HTC) sold the most handsets worldwide. when looking at just one device i think you're correct. i don't think HTC has sold 14 million of just one device.

to be fair, though, the Galaxy S phone is more than just one device. you have the original i9000, the Vibrant, Captivate, Epic 4G, Fascinate, Galaxy S 4G and Nexus S. with that many variations, i'd hope they'd have sold close to that number lol

What I meant is market share of manufacturers in android smartphones. Samsung handily outsells HTC in total handset number, but if you look at only android smartphones HTC still sells about 30~40% more than Samsung. If SGSII makes bigger success than SGSI did last year, Samsung might overtake HTC soon.

finally a bit more feedback on the sound :

"We'd be remiss not to point out that the Galaxy S II's loudspeaker is positioned rather poorly -- it and the two slits cut into the phone's rump for its output face the rear. Laying the handset down on a flat surface immediately alters the sound and a stray finger - a single fleshy finger -- can mute almost everything."

it sounds alot like the desire HD, most of the sound seems to come from the back.
kinda strange how they say its a easy to mute (a plastic cover style phone) from 1 finger yet a clip ive heard the sound seems quite loud?

bah, bottom line is, it MAY be just a small downside to an AMAZING phone. ill still get one.

I was surprised by how much difference one finger can make. I actually did this when I wanted the game I'd loaded to shut up quickly, it's so effective it works as an impromptu mute button.

I do that quite a bit with my SGSI, handy! I see they mentioned this speaker is louder than the SGSI speaker, thats good news if true, since the SGSI speaker is already adequate (certainly light years ahead of HTC's offerings).

I just pulled that engadget review up again to find something I had read, and the comments are now up to 3,922! Nearly 4k comments on this beast of a phone. clearly a lot of people are excited, and quite a few are upset! ;)

Don't waste your time on the comments section of any blog. Just sayin'. They are poor indicators of literally everything.

Oh I totally agree. Most of the comments were practically identical and had very little to do with the actual phone! Mostly fanboys of one side or the other bashing each other.

What I found interesting is that the average number of comments on a post on engadget is usually 300-500. That's why I was surprised at the fact that the comment count has now reached over 4,500! There are a lot of people excited for this phone and a lot of people up in arms that it got such a good review! Especially the part where Engadget said:

"... It's the best Android smartphone yet, but more importantly, it might well be the best smartphone, period...."
"... if you're asking us what smartphone to buy today, unconstrained by such externalities [referring to investment in the iTunes, iOS ecosystem], the Galaxy S II would be the clear choice. Sometimes it's just as simple as that."

That only means that the review inflamed certain people, and instead of one comment per user, there are flamewars involving a handful who are posting 100+ comments each and replying vigorously to each other with snarky comments. Controversial articles always do that, and there's no evidence it extends beyond that little troll bubble of any comments section. A LOLcat picture on reddit or digg will generate more comments, and there are dozens every day.

If SGS2 starts trending on Twitter and more people's girlfriends start namedropping it, those would be much better indicators. The 200k pre-orders in Korea, beating the iPhone4, seems to seal the deal, at least in Korea. But that market, of course, is a bit skewed toward Samsung. Let's see how it fares in the US, Apple territory.
