Engadget reviews the Droid X!

The score card on the droid x is only a 7 out of 10. The Incredible got an 8 and the Evo and iphone both got 9s. I know you have to base the scores on what else is out at the time (the competition, that is) and the Incredible was the best android phone on the market at the time of the review, but the X's score still seems a bit harsh.

I guess it really does come down to what you you think is the most important factors to you. Engadget seems to really put a lot of weight into the UI, camera and video interface, and the way it handled twitter.

I don't even have a twitter account. What I want is a great keyboard, great screen, snappy web browsing experience, great battery life and support for a variety of different video formats (avi, mp4, wmv). It seems to be all aces in these categories. That's good enough for me.

Also, what happens once the phone gets Froyo and fixes most of the major software issues the reviewer seemed to have with the phone? Does it all of a sudden go to 9?

I doubt it. Reviewers rarely ever go back and update their reviews after fixes have been released. It's one of the main reasons I don't take reviews as gospel.

Yeah, I know. I was just being sarcastic considering most of the issues the reviewer find most egregious are things that will likely be fixed with Froyo.

I know right? HTC Aria even got 7/10.

The review seemed to be quite positive. Like a con for not having 2.2 with launch? Really? It's coming next month.

Eh whatever. It's still going to be a sweet phone regardless of a 7 or not.

So... HTC Aria = Droid X? lol They must REALLY love HTC Sense.

Is it just me or are they never happy with the new phones anymore? Lol.

They were pretty happy with the iPhone 4. It's got some cool tech in it, no denying that, but not really a big surprise that Engadget loved it.

I figured out how they score their phones now. I think we want the smaller number and that higher the number the more issues with the phone.

9 - EVO and iphone, tons of hardware issues on the phone.

8 - Incredible had some issues but not as much.

7 - Aria and X have small to no issues, I guess they win.

Relax guys, there is still time to get an Incredible with an LCD display ;)

Hey, it did get an "8", you know ;) Well, that was with amoled, so maybe a common level 7 grade now, too. ;)

X will rock, so why get bent on one review that was positive, anyways?

"Beer", it's what's for dinner.

The review was decent and they liked the phone except for a few issues but then to give it a 7/10 with their new scorecards just doesn't fit the review and to knock it for not having 2.2 is just ridiculous especially when it's most likely coming next month and wasn't ready by the time they started producing the phones.

I read and re-read Engadget's review and I did not see anything about call quality. To me that is the first and most important thing I want to know about any smartphone. Because it will be my primary phone, I need to know if the signal quality is good, I can be heard and I can hear the other party clearly.

As far as the deficiencies that Engadget did bring up, I agree that most of those can be solved with a software update.

The lack of a FF camera is not a deal breaker for me. The Droid X is a 3g phone and I doubt that the video chat would work very well at 3g speeds. The iPhone 4 video chat only works over wi-fi. Evo 4g video chat is probably meant to work on a 4g network, might not do so well over 3g (don't know personally because I have not used it).

BTW I am a woman with small hands and I am getting the Droid X. Bonnie Cha did a video review on CNET and did not have a problem with the "bigness" of the phone. Although I have not used an Evo I did pick one up to hold and I did not find that phone too big for me.

A APPLE FANBOY REVIEW?

lol. please, spend one day on that site.....and see how they defend their apple juice

I guess they dont review the phone features of a device competing with their apple baby anymore? i wonder why.

And then this: picking out individual pixels requires leaning in, straining your eyes, and searching for them. OH REALLY?

finally: offer this phone with stock Froyo -- you've got perhaps the best Android phone ever made.

lol. so it gets a 7 because of motoblur?

HAHA what a joke

I'm excited for the x! However, how can anyone question a review without ever laying hands on it. Regardless I'm getting it, no matter what I read between now and the 15th. The best person to review it and know if its for me, is ME! Android on Fire Baby...

LMAO!!!! I'm not trying to put the Engadget review down, but cmon...some of us do actually use these phones to make calls, ya know?? The antenna issue with the iPhone 4....AND IT GETS A 9??? LMAO!!!

No offense, since I despise Apple and their leader, but you sound like an Xboy- aka fanboy too ;)

Its all about the money thats why I guarantee apple is paying top dollar while motorola figures they have a sweet phone that actually works and imagine this makes a call no matter how you hold it so why waste money for them to review when they can let the people who buy it do it for free.

Ooops they just forgot to mention "Don't hold it that way" on the iphone...and the 3 mics on X for superior call quality... iPhone=5 Droid X=9 :p

I understand when they reviewed the EVO, Inc, iPhone 4 weeks, months ago. I get that. But the X score coulda been a lil better..

Again, to not test a phones call quality and reception.....amazing...

They mentioned something, anything about the speaker and calls in the Inc, EVO and iPhone reviews...nothing for the X....the only mention of the speaker....was the hump keeping it off the table.....

....amazing.....

The miss about call function does suggest an agenda ;)

I agree how can you possibly give something a 9/10 when if you hold it in a certain spot your signal drops tremendously or goes away completely? That is terrible i mean atleast be honest with yourself and everyone else and give scores that something actually deserves. someone should compare all of the reviews maybe even do a side by side with droid x and iphone4 and direct it to engadget this is awful. They didnt even make a call on the X who reviews something thats main purpose is to make calls and in the review not even make a test call?

If you think a AOL owned site is spending the time and money to pay people to write reviews on devices to put apple in a positive light, wow.

I really like Android, but if you think the iPhone 4 is a pos you're delusional.

Ok, it might not be a pos.....but it also aint the best thing since sliced bread either. Its a good phone...

Its funny that Engadget in their iPhone review mentioned the "brand new omg holy cow"!! antenna design....

Where was the mention of the Diversity Antennas in the X review.....

Right....

Agreed, I think it would be a nice phone but it is definitely having some problems and everyone is trying to ignore that. The thing that bothers me is that with any other phone having these issues it would be a piece of crap.

With that said, I think it is great, have played with one in person. But I don't think it is that much better than the Incredible if it even is at all.
