EOL For Incredible?

Wouldnt shock me. Incredible 2 is due soon.

I think we'll get one last major update with gingerbread, and maybe another for bugfixes, and then thats it.

I just dont understand why they keep a crap phone like LG Ally selling, when they can keep a good phone like the inc in rotation. I guess they are more expensive to service or something.

I love my incredible. Amazingly but not surprisingly even at EOL, this phone can keep up with any other on the market. They could easily sell this phone for another year.

Part of the benefit of shrinking a chip design is the lower cost that comes with it. The new Snapdragon SOC, even with the upgraded GPU, is cheaper to manufacture than the first generation SOC. As a whole, the Incredible and Incredible 2 would probably have similar manufacturing costs, making it pointless to have them on the market together since one is clearly an upgrade of the other.

It's a sad day indeed. Especially without a valid replacement anywhere in sight. <sigh> I keep thinking HTC is putting out all of these mediocre phones because they have something truly Incredible on the way...but nothing I've heard of so far:(

I feel the same way. My upgrade is due at the end of April but don't really like the feel of the Thunderbolt. I'd love HTC to put out another 4G device similar to the Inc2. I'll hang on to the Inc running CM7 until something better comes out.

Are there any devices out there on VZW that you have your eye on?

Incredible 2 should be out a month or so after you get your upgrade, but won't be 4G. Apparently the reason why all 4G LTE phones are using 4.3" screens or larger is because the first gen radio is fairly large. We probably won't see 4G on smaller phones until a 2nd gen radio comes out. That could be the holidays, or even next spring.

I don't have 4g in my area until at least end of year anyways. The incredible is good enough to last me another year. Maybe I should wait for a 4g Incredible3.

I just got mine a month ago. 28 bucks! couldn't pass that up.upgrade from the Ally, so needless to say, I'm very happy with this one. I don't see myself needing more of a phone than this for quite some time.

I honestly hate the term "end of life". You all make it sound like the phones are all just going to die one day. You bought the phone knowing what it was, and any updates after that should just be a bonus. Be happy with the product as you originally bought it. Be lucky they're updating it at all. When you bought it, nowhere did they give you a promise of updates. You formed that expectation yourself.

And this:

I considered it EOL when they started shipping SLCDs in the place of the AMOLEDs.

Seriously? I can't tell a difference between my phone and my fiance's. Mine is amoled and hers is slcd. Besides, they were trying to keep up with the production demand and samsung was the entire problem.

Be happy with your phone. The Incredible is an amazing phone, with the exception of the poor battery life. Honestly though...with all major smartphones you're not going to see exceptional battery life because they ARE power hungry.

Stop going "OMG I can't believe we're not getting ____________! How could they do this to us?!"

That's a big part of why they never announce upcoming updates because then people get rabid if they get delayed or canceled. If people weren't such selfish pricks we might actually have a heads up on exactly what will happen for the duration of user support for our phones.

AMOLED was pushed as one of the nice features that differentiated the Incredible from the other phones coming out at that time, and it is one of the reasons I wanted the incredible. I played around with some of the SLCDs after they came out and they just don't look as vivid to me; I didn't say they sucked, but I don't think they are as good as the original. As for the rest of your post, I don't know if you were directing that at me or just in general, but nowhere in my post did I say I hated my phone or that it was a piece of crap. Its EOL status has no significance to me; I don't care if other people can't purchase the phone; I have mine and it is rooted with custom ROMs, and it's good enough for me.

Maybe I'm not looking hard enough at the phone to see a difference lol. I mostly text, take pictures (which usually end up on my computer so I don't care how they look on the phone), and browse the web. I suppose if you care a lot about pictures and video on the phone you might pay more attention to things like that. I, personally, haven't been able to tell though. If not for our cases and screen setups my fiance and I would confuse our phones constantly.

It was very generalized, not aimed directly at you.

i'm sorry, but in every way shape and form, AMOLED is by far the superior screen to lcd. looking at the thunderbolt compared to my inc looks like an atrocity, the screen is so washed out and the dark colors just look awful. i waited a month for my phone during the great amoled shortage of the summer of 10 and i'm glad i did.

best decision you and i could have made for a phone. i agree AMOLED set the inc apart from everything else. now that its SLCD doesnt make it a terrible phone, it just isnt as great.

I too prefer the AMOLED for what I use the phone for, but that's not universally true. If you're primarily reading text off the screen, the SLCD is better (the irregular pixel size due to the Pentile submatrix Samsung used on the AMOLED makes the text look blocky).

I just got an email newsletter from VZW. In one part of it, they have a section that says "Spring is in the air. New devices are in full bloom. See newest devices".
One of the 3 phones they have in the section to show the new devices is clearly an Incredible!

No, but it does have advantages

+better true contrast
+better power usage
+better viewing angles
+better response time
-readability (PenTile Matrix only, of which the AMOLED Incredible uses)
-over saturation of colors (LCD tends to be right on or under saturated)
-view-ability in sunlight (this will improve over time as the technology matures)
-life of the screen (doesn't matter for cell phones so much, but the blue LED decays 3x faster than the other colors, which is a major reason why OLED isn't use for mainstream televisions yet)

Overall, I agree that AMOLED is the better display for a mobile screen (with the exception of the sunlight viewing). But, it still has drawbacks when compared to LCD, just as LCD still has drawbacks when compared to ye old tube (CRT).

i guess i don't see these 'readability' issues, as i read things off my phone just fine...maybe that's my (knock on wood) 23 years of 20/20 vision for ya? idk. everybody complains about the amoled in sunlight, and again, i don't see it. when i'm outdoors with even sunglasses on, i set brightness to 100%, and i can read/see everything perfectly. as for the life of the screen, i've heard this many times as well; however, i don't think i'm going to witness the death of my screen before i get a new phone! actually, idk, maybe i will, seeing as i only want to buy newer HTC phones in the future, and i really only want AMOLED now!! haha. IMO, i really just feel the full on beauty of the screen for AMOLED far trumps the LCD's. maybe i'm just not a fan of the thunderbolt, but my brothers Droid X is LCD as well, and it just looks washed out compared to my AMOLED.

one thing i did notice though, i always thought amoled's blacks meant pixel off, as in not producing light. recently i discovered thats not the case with the inc..it still produces a bit of light when it's an all black image. odd?

For these issues, you have to be trained to see it. Not an insult, but "ignorance is bliss" certainly applies. If you don't know what you're missing, it's not an issue. It's noticeable though if I hold my phone up next to my wife's iPhone 4.

If I set my phone at max brightness, I can see it in on all but the brightest most direct sunlight. My wife's iPhone 4 is still viewable in these cases. Supposedly the Incredible's AMOLED at max brightness puts out 350-400 nits, whereas the iPhone 4 is in the 500-600 range. Like you said though, it's not a big deal.

It's not the life you have to worry about, it's the uniformity of degradation. On a normal screen, all sub pixels degrade at about the same rate. On an OLED, blue degrades 3x faster. This causes the screen to develop a tint over time.

I noticed this as well. When compared to my Zune HD, which goes totally black, there is a bit of grey on the Incredible. This seems to be caused by bleeding over from the white lights under the capacitive touch buttons.

interesting post. as for the tint of the screen, would it matter that i believe mine to be one of the ones from the factory with the reddish tint? it has a 'warmer' feel than my friends AMOLED inc

It's possible that the screen was defective from the factory. OLED is still a very immature technology. LCD, for example, didn't go into large televisions until at least a decade after being used for smaller computer monitors. OLED is seeing rapid advancement, but given the shortfalls, I understand why HTC and several other OEMs temporarily abandoned it in favor of LCD variants. They will go back to OLED eventually.
