I just dont understand why they keep a crap phone like LG Ally selling, when they can keep a good phone like the inc in rotation. I guess they are more expensive to service or something.
It's a sad day indeed. Especially without a valid replacement anywhere in sight. <sigh> I keep thinking HTC is putting out all of these mediocre phones because they have something truly Incredible on the way...but nothing I've heard of so far![]()
I feel the same way. My upgrade is due at the end of April but don't really like the feel of the Thunderbolt. I'd love HTC to put out another 4G device similar to the Inc2. I'll hang on to the Inc running CM7 until something better comes out.
Are there any devices out there on VZW that you have your eye on?
I considered it EOL when they started shipping SLCDs in the place of the AMOLEDs.
AMOLED was pushed as one of the nice features that differentiated the Incredible from the other phones coming out at that time, and it is one of the reasons I wanted the incredible. I played around with some of the SLCDs after they came out and they just don't look as vivid to me; I didn't say they sucked, but I don't think they are as good as the original. As for the rest of your post, I don't know if you were directing that at me or just in general, but nowhere in my post did I say I hated my phone or that it was a piece of crap. Its EOL status has no significance to me; I don't care if other people can't purchase the phone; I have mine and it is rooted with custom ROMs, and it's good enough for me.Seriously? I can't tell a difference between my phone and my fiance's. Mine is amoled and hers is slcd. Besides, they were trying to keep up with the production demand and samsung was the entire problem.

i'm sorry, but in every way shape and form, AMOLED is by far the superior screen to lcd. looking at the thunderbolt compared to my inc looks like an atrocity, the screen is so washed out and the dark colors just look awful. i waited a month for my phone during the great amoled shortage of the summer of 10 and i'm glad i did.

No, but it does have advantages
+better true contrast
+better power usage
+better viewing angles
+better response time
-readability (PenTile Matrix only, of which the AMOLED Incredible uses)
-over saturation of colors (LCD tends to be right on or under saturated)
-view-ability in sunlight (this will improve over time as the technology matures)
-life of the screen (doesn't matter for cell phones so much, but the blue LED decays 3x faster than the other colors, which is a major reason why OLED isn't use for mainstream televisions yet)
Overall, I agree that AMOLED is the better display for a mobile screen (with the exception of the sunlight viewing). But, it still has drawbacks when compared to LCD, just as LCD still has drawbacks when compared to ye old tube (CRT).
For these issues, you have to be trained to see it. Not an insult, but "ignorance is bliss" certainly applies. If you don't know what you're missing, it's not an issue. It's noticeable though if I hold my phone up next to my wife's iPhone 4.i guess i don't see these 'readability' issues, as i read things off my phone just fine...maybe that's my (knock on wood) 23 years of 20/20 vision for ya? idk.
If I set my phone at max brightness, I can see it in on all but the brightest most direct sunlight. My wife's iPhone 4 is still viewable in these cases. Supposedly the Incredible's AMOLED at max brightness puts out 350-400 nits, whereas the iPhone 4 is in the 500-600 range. Like you said though, it's not a big deal.everybody complains about the amoled in sunlight, and again, i don't see it. when i'm outdoors with even sunglasses on, i set brightness to 100%, and i can read/see everything perfectly.
It's not the life you have to worry about, it's the uniformity of degradation. On a normal screen, all sub pixels degrade at about the same rate. On an OLED, blue degrades 3x faster. This causes the screen to develop a tint over time.as for the life of the screen, i've heard this many times as well; however, i don't think i'm going to witness the death of my screen before i get a new phone!
I noticed this as well. When compared to my Zune HD, which goes totally black, there is a bit of grey on the Incredible. This seems to be caused by bleeding over from the white lights under the capacitive touch buttons.one thing i did notice though, i always thought amoled's blacks meant pixel off, as in not producing light. recently i discovered thats not the case with the inc..it still produces a bit of light when it's an all black image. odd?
interesting post. as for the tint of the screen, would it matter that i believe mine to be one of the ones from the factory with the reddish tint? it has a 'warmer' feel than my friends AMOLED inc
