Epic Battery Life Quadrupled after 2.21 update

My time without signal is 55%.. Does this.mean I have that bug and thats why my battery is rediculously quick to die?

What exactly do you do, just turn airplane mode on then off after restarting?

Also sorry, but what is it that tells you time unplugged and stuff?

Can someone explain this whole "airplane mode" thing to me. Because what I'm getting from this is people are saying to put your phone in airplane mode (meaning you can't get any kind of data, text, web or calls) to save battery.

So to me that's like saying, "If you want to keep your gas tank full just don't drive your car."

Kinda defeats the purpose, no?

So if I'm interpreting this incorrectly can someone please explain?

They mean you should switch on airplane mode for a few seconds and then switch it off again. The point is to use it as a reset tool, not stay in it throughout the day.

You only need to do it once, right when you turn your phone on. Don't need to do it again until the next time your phone reboots.

However, tests have been done, and people are saying while the stats appear as though your phone is searching for a signal 50% of the time, it's really not. Just some code left over from GSM phones. I don't think that's what's killing your battery, but I still do it each time I turn my phone on, just in case.

I would, however, suggest shutting down anything DRM related. I DO think that causes undo battery drain. Again, only needs to be done when you reboot your phone.

You got it. I usually leave it there for about 30 seconds or so, then switch it back. Again, I don't think it's actually needed, but I still do for peace of mind.

So last night I put the SyndicateROM on my phone and I am officially blown away. I took some screenshots using ShootMe. BTW, I mistakenly reset my phone earlier today so the time unplugged is a little off. I unplugged it around 11:40 this morning so I'd say its been unplugged for a little over 9 hours. This is definitely better than it was before. I am officially satisfied!

I don't know if this is just me, but after I did the 2.21 update on Monday my battery life skyrocketed. I was previously on the Dk28 Leak and that was okay, but i am unplugged for 10 hours now and I'm at 73% battery. I have email (K9mail) going as well as launcher pro, tweetdeck, as well as a live wallpaper, beautiful widgets and a few other apps. This is insane considering I was barely going 8 hours without having to charge my Epic.

I don't know about quadrupled but I noticed mine nearly doubled if not doubled and I noticed less processes see to be running in the background. I also feel like my phone is. Little slower now though :-(

Try this. Fully charge your phone.

Settings>Applications>Running Services and tap each one to turn it off. Swype will stay on but that's okay. You will see a dramatic change in how long it stays charged. Instead of rooting I jst used an app killer and now my battery stays good for close to 32-36 hours with minimal use and 24-28 hours when I talk, email, text and surf the net. (heavy use)


Just my 2 cents worth.
Sprint, Samsung, Google need to find a way for all the crap that runs in RUNNING SERVICES to have it turn off when NOT IN USE.
That in itself will increase most peoples battery use two fold.

Not that I am doubting you dksnet, but this seems like an interesting theory......but I must say I am kinda skeptical to close EVERYTHING that's running....thats like opening up task manager on a Windows PC and closing down everything and expecting the computer to still operate....(but then again, I am a newbie and a big scary-cat too, always afraid that I am gonna "mess up" something....lol)

Has anyone else been able to replicate this, or successfully close down EVERYTHING and still be operable?

Wow, I'm shocked as I read this thread because I actually came on the forum to find out if anyone was having less battery life since the upgrade. I'm clearly having quite the opposite effect, my battery is pretty useless now. I lasts me half of what it used to. Even dies down without use between me leaving the house and getting to work. I'll have to take it into Sprint and have it checked out. Good to know though, hopefully it can be resolved.

^yea, same here.....the 2.2 update neither hurt or helped my battery (it sucks either way)....I take my phone off the charger at around 7:15-7:30am and I have roughly a 30 minute drive to work...and in that time frame, my battery would drop a MINIMUM of 5-10% with no use (I might send a few texts or check my email---but that's it, I dont consider that heavy use); I don't think a battery should fall that much in that little time. Then by lunch, I would be lucky to have 30% left (which means my battery didn't even have the capability/capacity to last a whole workday).

I took it to the Sprint store the other day to test the battery, and of course they gave the generic "your battery is fine and working as it should, we found nothing wrong with it".....I, however, did stay in and hound them long enough to where the guy threw (literally) in a free battery----I guess just to shut me up and get me out of the store...his words were "I'm not supposed to do this, but go ahead and take it"----I guess he had gotten just as frustrated as I was. I never used the spare battery because I think it's absolutely rediculous to have to swap batteries midday.

Update: This morning, I did the below procedure I found in the http://androidforums.com/samsung-epic-4g/304013-ec05-love-hate-feedback-only.html thread and as of now (11:30 am) my battery is currently at 92%, which is a huge improvement over the old performance I was getting!!! Thumbs up to SurrealOne....I will keep my fingers crossed, if this rate of drain holds true and reliable (only an 8% decrease in 3-3.5 hours, then "theoretically" I should be able to get around 30-36 hours of life between charges)

Step 1.
power on phone
Step 2.
take the Battery out
Step 3.
hold the power button for 10 to 15 secs
Step 4.
put the battery back in
Step 5.
Power the phone on
Now wait and see how battery life is.

I did the update 2 days ago ota. Since then the sync icon has stayed on and my battery life has been cut in a third. I get about a half day with light usage and with juice defender running. Im about to go read and try to wrap my head around the rooting process.

i used to get a whole day outta my epic I updated while it was at 100% on the charger ...and now i have to ignore text messages for my phone to last all day ...what can i do to fix it

Do it, you will NOT regret it. Not only root it, but throw a custom ROM on there as well. That's where you will realize the true potential in this phone. I use this phone WAY more now that it's rooted and ROM'd than when stock and the battery is so much better I cannot begin to compare. Biggest tip = READ. Don't get all antsy, just read, understand what's what (kernal, ROM, CWM, etc) and you'll figure it out.

You can also head over to XDA and check out the "Epic Cookbook" thread as that is seemingly a similar compiliation of everything you would ever need and them some...and then some more.

Another Update: When I got off work yesterday, my battery was at approximately 66%....at midnight is when I got the "15%-plug-your-phone-in" message beep...and I went to bed last night at 12:45 and forgot to plug my phone in :-( When I woke up this morning at 4:30 am, my battery was at 4%....so all in all I am VERY PLEASED with the battery life now----my phone lasted roughly 20 hours (lower than the calculated 30 hours I was hoping for---but still an amazing 3-fold increase from the 4-6 hours, historically, I was lucky to get), all thanks to the battery pull using the above instructions....

I am just satisfied to be able to go a whole day at work and still have a charge in the evening/night while I am at home before going to bed; that's all I asked for, and I got it---I don't care about getting 24-30+ hours, because I plug my phone in before bed anyway.....if anyone hasn't already done it, I would encourage that, you will be pleasantly surprised!

So yea, I can belive the OP's battery life quadrupled (I am sure he may have rooted or added more tweaks, etc), since mine tripled....I am a believer now

My phone use to last about 10 hours which most of it was spent on campus where I have very bad signal. Going to test it out this week to see if there are any improvements.

no doubt battery life has increased from stock Di18 that came with phone to EB13 and now to EC05. I dont think there was any improvement from EB13> EC05 really. I think a lot of users are more aware of workarounds such as killing certain services/applications running, killing data/wifi connections when not in use. Also the TWS (airplane toggle) bug has not been fixed yet, but i make a habit of cycling airplane mode every morning when i take my phone off charge. Its funny, whenever i see someone with an epic randomly and start a conversation with them, they seem to always complain about battery life. I end up having to tell them to turn off wifi/bluetooth/gps when not in use. One thing for damn sure, my shop where i work blocks wireless signals like a magician, even my verizon work phone cant get a signal. So i am forced to be in airplane mode for a greater part of the day. When i do not do this, my time without signal is in the 50% and up range which is crazy. Im lucky to get 8 hrs of up time this way. But for example, i took my phone off charge at 6:30am yesterday, was in airplane mode for about 3hrs, switched it off because i left our shop and got home around 1:00am (it was bday) and still had about 25% life left. I do use Ultimate Juice and have it configured completely how i want where i achieve a battery savings of x2.29 occasionally. But to summarize this rant. DO THIS WHEN YOU WAKE UP:
1. Cycle airplane mode, turn off wifi/bluetooth/gps when not in use!
2. kill any sprint bloat
3. absolutely kill DRM services
4. If you know you wont be able to get a strong signal (even 1-2 bars) go into airplane mode until you can.
5. Use a a task killer/app killer if you desire (ignore anything that has to do with android/google)
6. Configure/use Ultimate Juice if desired

follow these steps daily(religiously) and you should see a decent increase in battery life
