"EPIC FAIL :( " - Multiple features removed on Epic 4G?

Hey I am kinda bummed about the missing pieces. But we need to look at this from all sides...yes the puzzle pieces are not there...the cool cd music player may or may not be there....But look at what we do get...front facing cam, 4g, the screen (yes the others have the same screen, but go with me here :D) better looking back, full 5 row qwerty keyboard and flash...oh and gps fixed....who says we won't get those missing pieces...who says we will...this is android...with the power of google and android...anything is possible....

plus anything is better then my moment...:D

The reason I'm interested in the Epic 4G, is because of the additional features, like keyboard, camera flash, front facing camera, 4G. But I wasn't aware of the fact I'd also be losing key features found in other Galaxy S phones. This is somewhat anticlimactic. Here's hoping Samsung adds back the missing features in their next upgrade.

I have to agree with you that I am buying the Epic 4G based on its amazing hardware features (FFC, Hummingbird processor, 5-row qwerty, camera flash, and 4G even though it is not available in my city yet)....I will be leaving T-Mobile for the Epic 4G instead of buying the Vibrant because I have always been a qwerty phone user as long as I can remember and even though there are similarities between those phones the Epic 4G is way ahead of the Vibrant in hardware specs.....If I chose the Vibrant I would be settling and in my opinion you don't settle for a phone when you are forced to sign a 2-year contract....I understand the hardware differences on each carrier but not the software changes on the Epic....Other than a landscape mode with the qwerty, why would they have to drop these key features....I feel there is something Samsung is not telling us yet that will give us a true answer....It can't be the memory space since 1gb is more than enough to have these features implemented with a lot of room to spare....Lets just hope the next upgrade brings us Android 2.2 along with all of these missing software features that we should have had to begin with :).....One last thing....Does anyone have a link to a video or page that talks about the Epic only having TouchWiz 2.5 instead of 3.0....I have not heard anything about this and would really like to read up on this.....Great posts guys and keep it coming!

makes my decision to stick with my palm pre even more better. I can wait out a new device. For the money you have to fork out for this thing its disappointing its missing all these features. Not even running TW 3.0 is a complete joke!

All GS phones are, but not Epic. They had to use something in between 2 and 3 to accommodate landscape mode with keyboard. This is the basic reason for the puzzle lock, media player, contacts app, sms app to have features missing.

That doesn't make sense. So none of the other Galaxy's can use landscape mode?

oh the epic comes out on the 31st?
a week after my birthday, cool

I wish when i had Sprint, that i would have had the chance to get the Epic(looks nice)

Currently, i am deciding between a Xperia X10 or Captivate for At & t

this phone looks cool

^^You get around on phones and networks don't you? :p

I hardly think these missing features make the Epic a fail. You could possibly get them in future updates or go the route of rooting. I'm sure a lot of people on these forums will be using LauncherPro and ADW anyway. It's the meat and potatoes that counts ;)

Check out the video of the Samsung Vibrant I posted above....The puzzle piece lock screen is in the beginning of the video at 3:12 into it....It looks very nice and maybe even be a fun alternative to the now infamous unlock code that we all know and love/hate :)

Meh. I just watched, and don't really see the point. Why not just show me the missed calls/texts on the screen? Why have a puzzle piece? Maybe I don't really get it, but it seems kind of pointless...

Its the "grass is always greener on the other side mentality". Whereas Captivate\Vibrant owners are saying they would give up said features for the additions we get on the Epic 4G, some of us are now saying the Epic is a fail because it lacks minor features (truely minor). This mentality is really silly when you compare what all you get with the Epic over the Galaxy S phones hardware wise, you can always add in software features you can't do the same for hardware (ffc, keyboard, flash, NAND memory... etc). In the end the Epic comes out looking like a much better phone even without these software additions.

Comparing to the other Galaxy S devices...features added outweigh the features removed. The removed features are very minor. Only one I care about is the music player...but I will likely be listening to Pandora most of the time anyways.

Simply put - the EPIC 4G is missing "apps" or "software", which can be worked around. The others are missing the hardware.

EPIC WIN!!!

one of the big differentiator between android and iOS (read iphone) is customization. outside of android vanilla, htc sense is crazy with it, and looks like samsung touchwiz is holding back a bit for the epic. seems like they are trying for middle of the road between iphone ui and full android customization.

IMHO, they are treading dangerously too close to the former.

The others aren't missing hardware, lol. Any phone that lacks a physical keyboard is "missing hardware"?

Others have 32-48GB storage capacity. The Epic, can't come close.

The others look and are designed better.

Front camera? Gimmick. Camera LED flash? The others take better pictures without a flash, lol.

The others are a better value since they're at rock bottom prices and we're talking about the same phones here. $250 out of the box for the Epic- wow those "unmissing features" really do command a premium don't they! A $250 premium!!

$350 with rebate besides taxes- activation. And Sprint's $10 a month 4G tax.

You Epic fanboys need to come back down to Earth.

My bad - as usual - you're correct - I'll take my chances - hopefully, the GPS will work!

Yes, I am getting around :P
i say it all the time

"I'm a hoe when it comes to phones" lmfao

The Epic can store 33GB, with a 32 gb micro sd card. That's certainly 'close' to 32-48.

The look and design is subjective.

I won't use the front camera much (if ever), but tell Apple it's a gimmick. They seem to think they really have something.

How do you know the others take better pictures without a flash? Have you taken pics with the flash with the Epic? Have you seen reviews that compare pics of the Epic with the other Galaxy S phones? Link? I'd be interested to see that, because one of the big reasons I returned my Evo was that the camera was terrible.

If you buy from Best Buy or other 3rd party, the rebate is instant. So that's a non-issue. The price being significantly higher than the other Galaxy S phones is a little annoying, but if it lives up to expectations, I don't mind so much.

I pay $45 a month right now for Clear's WiMax service. If I can get it on the Epic/Evo for $10, I think that's a steal.

Handcent and Launcher Pro will take care of most of my niggles about the phone.

Just need the LED Flashlight app to work and once root is achieved and the wireless tether app is updated, I'll be good to go.

Everything else is just fun and games.

You don't have this phone and won't be getting this phone so why are you here?

Well if you want more storage buy a bigger SD card. Not everyone wants or needs that much, personal opinion. Looks are very subjective as well, i like how the epic looks and am happy that it has a physical keyboard. Front camera can actually be very useful, I would def yse it. And also, the flash does help, reviewers even said the epic takes good photos. Aaaand $10 a month for 4G, not bad at all. Still cheaper than comparable ATT or Verizon plans! So like usual, everything you post is very subjective and no real backing (usually)

Folks,

The best way to deal with softdrink's posting is to simply ignore it.

Do not reply, reference, quote or in any way discuss it, as doing so will encourage additional posts of a similar nature.

I don't think it's that way at all. Just because Samsung is holding back options that come with 3.0 doesn't mean we are walled in to using the the stock apps.

You are still on Android, as such you are still allowed to change just about everything to your liking. Dialer, Browser, Messaging, Email, Calendar, Camera App, Gallery... You Name it you can change it.

Looking at iOS you may be able to change select things, but unlike Android, it is not the vast majority.

I, for one, am pretty happy that they hacked away a lot of TouchWiz... I think since some of the TW features arn't available, it will help with battery life, and since this IS a 4G phone (sucks battery), I think it will be a nice little compensation. The less bloat, the better, I say.

Besides, you can do all the stuff that TouchWiz does by just perusing the market and downloading replacement apps in about 20 minutes. I think all will be well.

Only missing feature I probably wish was on there is the Samsung music player. But even that app is missing a widget so it may have lead to me keeping meridian anyway. It is what it is. Hopefully the hackers can bring the goods...

Again, I do think we lucked out with Swype (it has a speech to text key!!). That was the sole reason I am using vanilla android keyboard over swype. Now I have nothing holding me back from swype!

What's pretty funny in this thread is what some view as plusses, orther view as negatives. This will be my first Android device - and I'm looking so forward to Bye Bye Blackberry!!!

But but at extra cost. $60?

I think you should familiarize yourself with Sprint's cost structure.
You have your minute/data plan monthly cost whatever that will be. But if you use an EVO or Epic they tack on an additional monthly $10 after everything else- call it a 4G Surcharge, or an EVO/Epic Surcharge.
