Eris Tips and Tricks

Move your phone significantly, and usually the screen comes back on. The point is that if a call is made, you usually put the phone RIGHT to your ear, so the screen goes off so that your ear doesn't push buttons (because the capacitive touch will do that!)

I just shake my phone a little bit, pull up the keypad, and make sure I push a button every 3 seconds or so, and it stays lit.

I'm not explaining it right.
I need access to the dial pad while the phone is in the wait state so I can enter a code. The proximity sensor is not the problem. All my dumb phones can do it, why can't the Eris.

There's a little keyboard icon that you can press and that'll bring up the number dialpad when you're on a call.

the proper VM trick code would be

*86pp1234#pp1

where 1234 is your password, so change that to YOUR voicemail password.

enter that in phone number field of your voicemail contact and if will take you to your first message automatically...the p's are pauses (i use 2 because some carriers want a longer pause, it will work)

so it calls your VM number, pauses, enters your password and # sign, pauses, hits 1 for first message

Caddyman, thank you for that trick. I use this all the time now, and it's nice not having to type my password each and every time. Thanks!

So in theory this should work for other things correct? Like my bank account or credit card account?

For example....

18002223333pp1ppxxxx Where 18002223333 is the phone number, then pause pause then 1 is to check account, then pause pause, then xxxx is my password or checking account.

Basically, it would probably take some playing with but this can be done for other things correct? Not just VM.

Setting up that VM contact was way cool and I started wondering if I can do it for other things.

Under the add contacts menu the keyboard has two letters. One is a P and the other is a W. I figured out the P was for pause. Anyone know what the W is for?

Not sure if this is relevant but I keep reading about people having issues syncing to their FREE Yahoo account.

Yahoo has a free mobile service. Sign into your yahoo account then go to your mail box. In the top right hand corner there is an option called mobile. Click on that and it will prompt you to enter your mobile phone number. Once you submit it Yahoo will send a text message to your phone with a link to check your mail. I then bookmarked that link. That bookmark can now be inserted on the homepage of your phone. I've never had to re-enter my user name and password. I suspect it somehow recognizes my phone number and automatically takes me to my mail.

This works with WiFi and G3. Downside is that you have to manually check it. There is no notification process that you have mail.

yup if you can figure out the sequence sure it should work.

W i think is wait, it is either longer then a pause or it waits for s response maybe then goes? not sure.

Sorry to disagree. :)

Mine does not prompt you to enter the pound sign or any numbers aside from your password. There is not a pause either.

"Please enter your password"

"You have 3 new voice messages"

Then it immediate proceeds to...

"First new voice message...."

.....and so on

Interesting huh?

Must vary by locale.
We have two identical (except for color) Verizon LG VX8350 phones. One has a 916 area code and one has a 541 area code.

The voicemail system is different on the two phones. Even the female robot voice is different. One immediately goes to the first voice message and the other requires pressing "1" first.

(Actually, I replaced one of the 8350s with an Eris a couple weeks ago.)

I think the pound sign only comes into play when you initially set up your password. After that they don't ask for it. It just becomes part of your password from that day forward.

I tried sending a 7 second video using both Handcent and the HTC messege app and both times i got a messege that said "memory limit reached" and that the video could not be sent. Does anyone know whats going on:confused:

I love this phone and have looked as long as possible on this great forum for help, but if I stay on the computer anymore than necessary my wife will steal it. Here are a few questions, please don't shoot me (yet)

I believe some are calling it the People widget....It originally said FAVORITES that loads your most called friends to a widget. Where is this widget, I cannot find it on the lists or how to edit it?

I want to have my FB app open and running but do NOT want my phone to use my friends FB photo as the photo in my phonebook. I did have pics set in GMAIL but then they all switched. How can I switch them back?

I have adjusted my phone from the battery life threads and it worked well today, no worries there.

I will be downloading the handcent or chomp for sms once I get the smaller issues fixed so the texting is a bit easier.

Is there a way I can have a simple phone book that shows my contacts and gives me the ability to scroll through without barely touching the screen and dialing someone? Slightly annoyed with that.

Sorry I am rambling but I needed to get that out. I am tech savvy but I felt a little silly when playing with this phone for the first time. My next set of questions will be aimed at loading music in and how to "clean" up the memory on the phone after removing unwanted programs.

Daver

P.S. Is there a specific SD card that is recommended for the ERIS?

I routinely use a bluetooth while on the phone, and thus put the phone in either my holster or in my pocket. However, I have not found a reliable way to lock the phone while I'm talking. Any ideas? I'm tired of opening other applications and/or hitting numbers / hanging up while on the phone. Thank you.
Is there a way to lock the phone while on a call like Santinoirish asked? I don't use a bluetooth, but according to this thread (http://androidforums.com/htc-droid-eris/24629-hanging-up-all-time.html) I have a funny shaped head that hangs up on people at times. Not all the time, but enough to want a lock ability. :o

Hey this phone is pissing me off had it for three wks and today on my front screen the time now reads 6 hours behind and the weather that has been on the screen is now gone??

As I recall... W=WAIT... (wait for send key)

... back to the voicemail example...

*86W1234, where 1234 is your password...

When you first hit "send" Eris should dial "*86"... and wait for you to hit "send", when it will then dial "1234". You would use it where the answering unit has a variable ring wait time before it accepts input. For example, I had to use this on my voicemail system at work which would pick up after 1 to 8 rings depending upon how busy it was. IIRC, the "P" is a fixed 2(?) second pause.

Caveat... I've not tried this yest on my Eris...

You can disable the Sense UI without uninstalling it or rooting the device (which to my knowledge is not yet possible as there are no roms).

To switch to the stock android home manually do:

1. Click Menu > Settings > Applications > Manage Applications.
2. Scroll down until you find an application named "HTC Sense" and click on it.
3. Scroll down to where you can see "Launch by default" and click on "Clear defaults".
3. Then push the Home button (on your phone) and a dialog will pop up showing "Home" and "HTC Sense", check "Use by default for this action" and then click "Home". Now you got "Home" as default.

Just repeat the same process for "Home" to go back to the "HTC Sense" UI.

Alternatively you can use a program on the market place called "Home Switcher" to do this for you.

What does turning off the sense UI do for the Anroid Eris?

Are there any alternatives to the default clock/weather widget? The clock lags and the weather keeps showing the wrong city.

Not sure if this has been posted yet, but I found this to be VERY useful and it can be done. The original question was can you change the Gmail account (email) in the Eris to another one. A lot of folks seem to think that a hard re-set is required (even my local Verizon Tech). It worked for me and all my data remained intact. I hope this helps someone. Enjoy!

Firstly you need to press - Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Google Apps > "Clear data" > OK.

This will delete the Google account details on your mobile.

To enter new details press - Settings > Data Synchronization > Google and you'll be prompted with the set up dialogue. Enter your new account details and Bob's Ya Uncle!?!

Full credit to Dr Hotdog for this.

I'm new to the Droid Eris phone.
This worked VERY WELL for me. A little background:

Purchased the phone on New Years day. Love it. Got to work on Monday and synched with my gmail. We use google talk in the building for information, inventory status etc. When sync was complete, ALL of my contacts in my phone were now on Google Talk. Took them out of GT on my PC. Every time someone would GT me in the office, it would go off on my PC and the phone. Got sick of that fast.

Got in touch with a friend of mine who has one and we couldn't figure it out. Took it to Verizon and the Tech who helped me with my purchase said that I would need to wait for 2.0 system update. He has HTC Droid and he showed me where he can manage multiple accounts on his. He then looked it up on his database, and even Verizon said Hard Reset is the only way. Searched here and found cheggerspop's post above. Looked at everything and decided to go for it. Change was fine and even used the confirming email from this site to register on the phone (typing on PC now though). All my GT contacts from the office are now no longer on my phone. All other information is totally in tact! Sweet! Gonna show the Verizon Tech tomorrow.

I used this site a lot for research prior to my purchase. Went with the Eris because form (read-thin) was more important to me than processing speed. Advanced Task Killer is very helpful in conserving battery life as well as all of the other tips in the Sticky. I pretty much run from about 5:30 a.m. until well.....phone is still on right now. Running average of about 32% Awake Time and battery is still at about 35%.

Great phone!!!!

What does turning off the sense UI do for the Anroid Eris?

it allows you to run any of the other home replacements, you loose the htc widgets but will continue to have the applications that htc has replaced like the contacts and dialer. The sense ui is put to sleep and uses a lot less resources if you use the default android home as well. It does not shut it off completely but does keep it from using extra resources causing the phone to be more responsive.

That said I still run with Sense on. It's the best home replacement out there that I've tried and I'll take the extra resource usage for all the things they offer.

added this to first post

IMPORTANT, this it seems has led to many people having a whole myriad of problems that unfortunately lead to hard resets.....IMO hard reset is a huge PITA and should be avoided at all cost so I will add this info here.

This tips pertains to apps. DO NOT go crazy when you get your phone and download and install 10 apps all at once, don't even install 2 apps at once. this is not because the phone can't handle it but there are quite a few apps that seems to be buggy. more-so it seems many apps don't play well together. this can lead to any number of issues for you.

my advice is to download and install apps one at a time, after installed open it and check out all the features. if everything seems to be working, great, on to the next one.

ALSO if you install an app that controls an in built setting on your phone like say a mobile network toggle widget, or ringtone changer, anything that there is a duplicate switch in the phones native settings MAKE SURE you undo whatever you did with that app BEFORE you uninstall it. EX: for a network toggle, toggle your network back on with it before you uninstall it....if you don't it seems there is a chance it will make that setting stick after being uninstalled and then you are SOL.

just be mindful of the apps you are using and their uses, features, what they control, etc.

I was just screwing around and now can't get my Sense UI back even though I've tried to follow the reverse directions. I really like it...anyone have any pointers?

At first I could hold down the Home button and get a list of apps that included the HTC Sense UI but now I can't even get that. Would love to have it back.

Might've been posted, but this is the BEST thing for battery life, by FAR.

When you know you're going to be in an area without service for an extended period of time, OR you know you won't be able to answer your phone for a period of time, put your phone in airplane mode.

It deactivates all wireless activities, messages, phone calls, wifi, everything...the phone remains on, however...it basically turns into a clock. You can still access all your files, just can't make any calls, browse the web or send and receive texts.

Went to sleep last night, put it in airplane mode...82% when I went to bed...82% when I woke up.
