Eris Tips and Tricks

has this tip been posted? probably but I couldn't find it anyway. this is with 1.5, I haven't updated to 2.1 yet but a quick way to put a shortcut on your home screen...instead of having to go thru all the menus... is go into your apps, long press on the program and it will make a shortcut. You can then leave it on your home screen or move it to one of your other ones.

That works on 2.1 also. :)

curvefish puts out some nice toggles, for 2.1 included. if you want to turn off moble networks, get the "2G/3G" toggle. these will work with Sense and Home both.

Do a search for Curvefish in the market app to find them.

That app specifically says NOT FOR DROID USERS.

trying it anyway though :)

I updated to 2.1 as soon as I saw the leak. Am I the only one that didn't know that you can use the google search button to voice dial? I just discovered this today and don't remember hearing about this lovely feature! I always had a difficult time with the default voice dialer and this seems to be much more accurate and responsive for me. I said "call voicemail" and it just did it. No confirmation needed. I never knew this was an option.

So I am not sure if this has been mentioned but i noticed something last night about Google Navigation (Google Maps) (1.5). When you have the GPS on, it is GREAT! but i noticed as it is tracking your position the screen does not stay centered on the Blue Dot! I had it running and when i looked back over at the screen the blue dot was gone! Is there a setting that centers the blue dot on the screen so you can see where you are as you the GPS runs? (like a Garmin)

In 2.1

People > Menu > View

This gives you a list of contacts that you want to view on your phone.

You can chose to only show contacts with phone numbers, only google contacts, only phone contacts. It also gives you the ability to show or hide all your non-google facebook contacts as well as the auto gmail contacts.

I can safely say I am current on all the 2.1 threads and there are a couple little features I have some across that I don't recall reading about.

1 - An alternate way of viewing all 7 screens aka helicopter view is when on home screen simply press the home button again. This zooms out to all 7 screens. Comes in handy when you are working one handed and don't have the ability to do the pinch.

2 - When in a a text dialogue, where you can see the historical texts from someone you can click on their picture or default grey head and a new row of icons will appear allowing you to either: Call, view contact info, send text, or email. This window also pops up when you are in the text mesasge 'rollodex' full screen widget and click on their picture. May have been in 1.5 but is something I never came across.

Sorry if this is a newb (or n00b) question....

I see a few people asking how they can check their data usage. The salesdude at the Verizon store where I got my phone said it is necessary to have an unlimited data plan on your package. If that is the case, what is the point of tracking your data usage? TIA!

I was running with my Eris as my MP3 player and an inbound call came in. I quickly discovered that I could take the call with the headphones still plugged in. My next test is to see if it will work effectively with speaker phone activated. This will enable me to listen to my music in the car and still take calls without unplugging the phone.

I just got my Eris the Friday, and for the past three days I have been glued to this forum, learning all the tricks, tips, peoples favorite apps, ect...

I have downloaded handcent and tried this tip.. every time I look at my awake time is is still always 100%. What am I doing wrong? What else could be preventing my phone from sleeping?

Thanks for the help in advance!

if you have horrendous battery life it may be because your native sms app is preventing your phone from sleeping.

to check go to settings>about phone>status and at the bottom wake time. if it is 100% you more then likely have this bug

to fix it go into your messages app, menu>setting> and turn off notifications.

go to the android market and download handcent sms or chomp sms, and install. then pick a contact and press send sms, pick your new sms app as default, and send any message. then do a reboot.

once that is all done, power on your phone, let is sleep for a minute after reboot and go back to settings>about phone>status and at the bottom wake time. if it is around 50% or so the fix has worked and you should be able to charge faster and hold a charge longer.

That's awesome, but it says (0) next to facebook contacts -.-

I see that the Moto Droid displays the time of the next alarm on the lock screen. Is there a way this can be shown on the Eris too, either by disabling Sense or a lock app?

This may be obvious, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere:

To unlock the phone, you can also press the "end" key followed by the "menu" key instead of swiping the screen.

Is there a way to disable this? Sometimes if its in my pocket, it finds a way to unlock itself...I'm assuming this is how its doing it.

You could enable the security lock, where you have to enter a code to unlock the phone. Other than that, I think you'd need root to disable.

You're welcome, taki812. For texts, you can go into Messages -> Settings -> Notification sound. That way you'll know the difference between text and email.

OK so I've read through a good portion of this thread and haven't found the issue I'm looking for. A co-worker just got an Eris, and the guy @ Verizon synced her phone to her google/facebook contacts.

She is having 2 major issues:

1. She has >1K google contacts and they are all synced to her contact list on her phone, which as you can imagine is leading to severe clutter. On my Droid I can hit "contacts>menu>display options>only contacts with phones" which prevents random google/facebook email contacts from showing up in my contact display. I've tried doing something similar on her phone with no luck. Any advice?

2. A good amount of her contacts have similar names, as such, when facebook and google synced her contacts and merged duplicates, a lot of people's number's were placed into other people's records. I am at a total loss for this one and I'm trying to avoid having her go into her (massive) contact library and correct the contact numbers for her friends.

Any help is greatly appreciated. tia
