Eris to v2.x, when?

When the Incredible and or the N1 comes out all will be forgotten with the Eris. They (verizon) is hoping that you will buy either and dump your eris in the top drawer. It's a win-win situation for verizon (and HTC). Unfortunately the customer (eris users) gets the short end of the stick.

Could you please elaborate? What happened there?

They will probably ship the update after the incredible come out because people will jump ship to that one for 2.1 and snappier hardware, if they put the update now people might update and just say "nah" when the incredible comes out... At least I am guessing thats what OTD is saying.

The Incredible appears to me to be quite the Eris killer, for those not yet with an Eris, mostly, but also for those not satisfied with the Eris that they now own.

Where Verizon customers are now, in their contracts, will have a bit to do with a possible switch, I'm sure, but I'm thinking that many, many will slough off from Eris over to that new device.

As for me, no. Eris is all I need and is well worth the small price I paid for it; I'll be using it at least for the first year of my 2-year contract.

I went into Verizon yesterday and asked about the update and was told there is no update for the Eris. He said they are not updating the Eris because the 2.1 was for the Moto droid so those users could get pinch zoom and a few other things. Something the Eris already had. Basically I got the Impression from the guy that I should have purchased the Moto droid instead of an Eris. That kind of ticked me off, guess VZW could give 2 sh_ts about customers who bought IMO the better of the 2 phones. I replied to the guy that there should be an update and then whipped out my Eris, pulled up AF, went to the information week website and showed him article showing VZW stating that there would be an update to 2.1. He was shocked. He then went into his VZW terminal and it showed that there is indeed an update coming, just not a date as to when.
I mean really is the Moto droid that much more spectacular. Shows me one thing though. VZW is willing to please its customers that buy their flagship giving them updates to receive stuff that didn't initially come on that phone but not coming full circle on the love for the Eris crowd. Rant over. Just needed to vent to the understanding Eris crowd.

Interesting that he did go to his computer to update his info based on what you said. I wonder if he'll now change his story when asked about the update by others.

blah blah blah blah blah. can't these nonsense "when" threads be locked already?

Why though? People still click on them, read them, and reply. Meaning there's no need to lock 'em up I would think. Kinda like the "Leak" threads, etc, if I don't have a need to bother with them, I don't click on 'em.

The Blackberry Storm was running the 4.5 or 4.6 OS and the new Storm 2 was slated to come out with the newer 5.0. Many were talking about switching to the Storm 2 for the newer OS and hardware. The day before the release of the Storm 2 Verizon sent out information of an update for the Storm 1 to 5.0. This gave the Storm 1 the same OS as the Storm 2 and actually made a few people change their minds about the switch, despite the hardware differences. Now the big difference is that the Storms 1 and 2 were more or less the same phone with different hardware. The Eris and the Incredible are totally different phones. However, I can easily see Verizon waiting until the Incredible is just about to be released or just after it has been released to send out an OTA to us.

Any phone is the Eris killer for those that are having trouble with their phone. I don't blame them, I'd be throwing mine if it acted as bad as some of them describe.

You poor thing. Having to endure this topic since March. I really feel for you and the horrible pain you must be experiencing.

Seriously, if you don't like a topic then don't read. It isn't like anyone has a gun to your head. If they do by chance actually have a gun to your head, then I say "pics or it didn't happen".

Most VZW reps do not know the OTA date for the Eris, but I have spoken to a couple people and one person said that the updates started early this week and within two weeks time all Eris phones should have 2.1....I hope this is true, but I don't think we will see the update until the Incredible makes some sales for the first couple of weeks.

Verizon looks at this as a way to make more money from frustrated Eris owners who can't wait for the update.

DON'T GIVE THEM THE SATISFACTION!!! BE PATIENT.

For what it's worth, I emailed verizon yesterday expressing my annoyance with the verizon rep who assured me of an update to 2.1 shortly after my purchase 2 months ago. This is the response:

First, we sincerely apologize for the delayed response. Due to an extremely high volume of customer email inquiries, the response time has been longer than expected.

We appreciate your interest in the HTC Droid Eris device. A software update for the device will be released in the near future. We apologize if the software update was not made available during the first quarter of this year, as planned. Also, we apologize that we do not have a specific date for the software update because a date has not been released. You will be notified on your device when the software update is ready for you to download.

I bought my phone about a month ago and my vzw rep told me that the update was already being released when I bought it. Obviously he didn't know what the hell he was talking about and I was too new to this phone to be able to call him out on it....the guys in the store know nothing

FWIW, when I bought my Eris on Nov 13, the guy at the Authorized Verizon Retail Outlet (i.e. not verizon employee) said it would be update to 2.0 (there was no 2.1 yet) in 2 weeks.

He was wrong.

Good Afternoon, Mister kratzer, this is Liz calling from verizon wireless, Executive Relations. I walked checked up on the Troy terraced update for you and the plan was to really say within the first quarter, but there was some issues with the test software so we wanna make sure that it's good to go and up for standard up to standard, I'm sorry before we release it, so we do not. There's going to be a software update, we just don't have the date, so if something comes up alright. I am gonna be keeping your number and your information so that I can give you a call. Thanks and have a good day.

So it seems that we are finally getting consistent messages from Verizon, yes there will be an update, no, they don't know when. So relax guys, that's the way it is, like it or not.

You are aware that you will hurt badly if you don't post here the second that they call you back. :D

Seriously though, that is pretty cool. Thanks for posting it. That is by far the best "talked to Verizon today" post that I have ever seen.
