Eris to v2.x, when?

And to OTD's comment, the version handed to Sprint for the Hero will be different than the one given to Verizon for the Eris. They are not making just one OS mod for all carriers as far as I know. The version handed to Verizon should have been tested on the Verizon network by HTC prior to being declared "done" in Barcelona.

I know Verizon has always done it this way, and will continue to do it. But it still frustrates the hell out me!

Not necessarily true. While the versions handed to Sprint and the version handed to Verizon will have their differences they are not 100% different. While the two will have a few different features they are basically the same OS. HTC did not go back to the drawing board for every carrier and every model of phone. That would have been a huge waste of time and money on their part. What they would have done is combine 2.1 with Sense UI and then modified it per the carriers needs and wants.

It isn't just Verizon either. All carriers do this. It saves them on tech support calls and money down the road. Some, like Verizon, are just a little more overly thorough than others.

The funny thing to me is that the people that usually get the most impatient for an OS update are the first ones to raise hell when it doesn't work 100%. I'm not implying in anyway that this describes you, I have just noticed it over the years. With BlackBerry, everyone would yell for them to release the update. When a carrier did release it a bit earlier the same group would start a bitch fest about how much it sucked. It has always cracked me up.

Dialer, probably not. Since there's history and personal info there I don't feel comfortable posting it.

I'm using Swype but may be able to get a sample of the stock kb in use. Haven't noticed any lag on it so far.
Yes! This was one of my concerns. I've become so intoxicated with Swype that if 2.1 broke it on my phone, I wouldn't be able to rest until I had it again.

Are you using the same, uh... *swashbuckling* version that we all are?

I'll have to go to the Swype thread in a bit, but I was wondering of you that like it so much, was there a time at first when you thought it was not going to work for you?

I tried it and tossed it within about 30 minutes of typing the oddest things in place of what I meant. I felt drunk, and yet had nothing at all to drink.

I can neither confirm nor deny

Is there any chance that one of you could email the *swashbuckling* version of the swype apk to j.c.sugrue at gmail dot com? I did factory reset, not realizing that it has disappeared from the planet. Thanks.

You guys probably knew this was coming, but how do you get it?

It was posted in a blog post and on another forum a while back. The links came down because even though it was never really meant for our phones it is pirated software.

So sad... I would gladly give a $30 donation to Swype Inc. to absolve my guilt and get automatic updates.

NKT, you forgot "Deactivate reliable You Tube app functionality" for the 2nd update, LOL.

I tried Swype and it was fun, worked well but not as fast as the regular keyboard for me.

OK back to your regularly scheduled thread...

I hear that. But I guess as a consumer I would expect to be handed a working product, especially if i had special ordered it, as Verizon has done. If my business had special ordered a piece of software, i would certainly expect it to have been tested thoroughly on my network before it was handed off to me as "complete." If it is not, they would not get my business any more.

Not to beat a dead horse, but just one more thing. I completely agree with you here... in a perfect world. If every programmer and tester performed their job correctly then none of this ad nausium testing would be required. Unfortunately some people aren't as good at their job as others and even good people have off days and make mistakes. Is Verizon going overboard?... possibly but we can only hope it leads to a better product and not missed bugs because you are too close to the tree to realize you are in a forest.

I'm sure I could make a call about the working youTube to have that corrected ;)

Swype took some getting used to, but I can use it pretty well now.

I know Verizon is just doing the same old CYA moves as every other carrier. And, for the record, I would not blame Verizon for a problem i feel rests with the HTC Sense mod of 2.1. As I have said before, I expect HTC, who made the phone, to be able to make sure any modified OS worked well with it before giving it to Verizon as a finished product. They did the original 1.5 mod too and should know the hardware and network parameters they are working with.

I recognize this is the industry standard way of doing things. But i still find it mindboggling that any company would not demand a finished product that worked out of the box without further testing. If Ford sells me an upgraded engine for my Explorer, I expect it to fit and function perfectly right out of the box. It better, or I certainly will not be buying a Ford product ever again. (I know you hate car analogies) :D

Speculation about why there hasn't been an update rolled out even though it seems ready reminds me of all of the road widening projects that have happened around me. You look at the orange barrels set up, blocking brand new shiny lanes that are painted and look more than ready to go but the barrels remain for like a month. You start wondering...why don't they just take down the freaking barrels and let us drive on the road?! However, deep inside, you know that those barrels are up for some unexplainable reason that makes perfect sense to the DOT.

Just saying...

Ummm...the car makers get it wrong even after their extensive testing...have you looked at Toyota lately?
