If you can afford it I would defiantly trade in for the n1. What you are seeing here from a few, and certainly myself includes, is not the lack of appreciation of the current smart phone that I have, but more the unmitigated frustration from the bag of crap I am being shoveled by Verizon and htc regarding the Eris and its updates. I don't care so much about 2.0 or 2.1, my phone works great, aside from the definite lag under heavy use. Its the fact that there is NO straight talk from Verizon or, and most importantly for me, HTC. This phone has been hanging in the wind with no true info updates on the progress of 2.0/2.1. I feel as if HTC is playing ball with Verizon just like phone manufactures in the past have done to guide the cattle to the phones they want to dump just before the next great thing comes out. That is business and nothing I can do about it, BUT its one thing to play ball with Verizon and team up to jerk the cattle but I dont know if the Nexus Google guys will play ball with Verizon. Google seems to be on their own program with their "own" phone, getting updates out sooner, selling hardware cheaper and direct, and "allowing" the phone to be rooted. I thought for sure that this was THE phone for me and, although I do love it, I don't love HTC's support of it nor do I love the lack of support for prior HTC models I have heard about. It is certainly not the hardware that I have a problem with though. The phone is more than capable, and if we could freakin root the thing (and by we I mean many amazing devs much smarter than me) it would truly kick a** in no time flat. Long and short is if you can trade up for the n1 then you should in my opinion but then there is always the chance the n1 on Verizon wont get the updates when the n1 on t-mobile will because Google will have to play ball with big red there too. Time will tell but at least it is rooted so you will have the world at your fingertips as far as updates go with a bit of tech skills and some good walk throughs. Sorry had to vent a bit. I have pretty much pulled back and watched these last few weeks because my habit of checking the forums for signs that HTC gave a crap about the Eris several times daily was getting annoying, but just wanted to give my op on the possibility of trading up.

I knew from the time Google announced the N1 and said it would come to verizon, that it would be my phone. The only reason I bought an Eris was to become accustomed to the form facter and android itself (came from a touch pro). The Eris is nothing but a stepping stone and a warm up for the real thing. I cannot understand why manufacturers continue to use outdated hardware. I mean the original touch pro has the same damn processor as the Eris and they are over a year apart! Even now the "new" HTC phones like the legend have the same old processor, just with a die shrink and clocked 76MHz higher. Looking at SoC roadmaps, and knowing the development cycle for getting new phones, especially since the US is so far behind other countries, I really feel the current Snapdragon (QSD8250 for GSM and QSD8650 for CDMA and GSM) will be king for at least the next year and a half. The N1 should have a good lifespan for android in the US.

It's kind of funny. I've been sitting here watching. Excitement gives way to frustration gives way to anger gives way to resignation.

Nothing is really different than when we started following this thing. I buy A LOT of phones. I manage a fleet of several hundred devices. I will not wax philosophic and type a thousand words but the Eris is the first Android device I have turned loose in my formerly all Winmo shop and the feedback has been great. When you hear many users (who are not gadget heads) singing the praises of this device, I think it speaks pretty loudly.

Does it have an older processor, yup. Welcome to technology folks. Before one device hits the shelves, its successor is already in some tester's pocket. There is no need for derision and venom. It's the circle of life. So if you are in a position to upgrade, proceed. Just be aware that sooner, rather than later, the newness will wear off and you may find yourself on a N1 forum exclaiming, "Why would HTC do this to us!" ;)

OP sounds good ot me. but heres the thing that bugs me

if testers did the upgrade via usb, that means they have the upgrade file.....so WHY THE HELL do we not have it?

these things leak all the time, RIM leaks BB os's like my pool leaks water.....wassup with that?

For those of you wanting the N1, be prepared to not have the use of upgrade credits. Last information was it was going to be sold only by Google, so no NE2. There's still a possibility that VZW will offer something like T Mobile, but don't be surprised if they don't. The N1 is a gravy device with what they have in the pipe...

Back to Eris 2.1, yes, there was a OTA server issue. Haven't heard if they've sorted it out. Anyone who says they got an OTA and it's under 100mb is probably FOS. The upgrade image file is 106mb!

With all due respect, please do not insult my intelligence by assuming I don't understand technology development and advancement. I have followed smart phone hardware for almost two years. I have seen the time between a new chip release and the release of a new product. There is no reason to be using the msm series when the qsd is much more competative. They are shooting themselves in the foot.

yeaaa, why hasn't it been leaked yet!
Are the HTC testers greedy?
LEAK IT ALREADY

You have it all wrong. Neither Verizon nor HTC has ever been anything but honest about the Eris. They have said since day one that the Eris will receive the update to 2.x during the first quarter of 2010. That's your answer. They've never once waffled on that stance.

What you are confusing is the dozen of people every week who call VZW or HTC and then start a thread on this board telling everybody that Joe salesman at VZW or Randy tech support guy at HTC said 2.x is coming out on X date when in reality it's either made up or those low level employees at VZW or HTC simply have no idea because they work in a call center, not the corporate office of either company with access to legitimate information.

If you think VZW or HTC has been jerking people around about the update it's because you haven't been paying attention.

Wonderful news! I'm willing to pay extra to keep VZW away. VZW, you are nothing but a dumb pipe, so know your role and shut your mouth!

They're probably signed not to, or can only use it from test machines on test handsets?

I don't even know that we know the quantity of testers. It could be 20 in-house Verizon testers. Verizon locks their stuff down like nobody's business. Maybe computers on there with no internet, you're not allowed to bring a USB drive, etc.... you'd think SOMEONE would have plugged their OWN eris or SD card (in a test phone) in and grabbed the file, and no one would have noticed....

No, it's called market segmentation ... a principle that anyone who follows the tech industry should be imminently familiar with.

No insult intended. I agree that sometimes things get rolled out when a better alternative may have existed. But there are many factors we are not aware of. Who is to say that when they were in the design phase they did not discover the use of a different chip architecture would cause a rework of other subsystems and therefore be cost prohibitive. I've been dealing with these devices since Palm was king and they weren't phones at all.

My point was that we shouldn't let ourselves get so worked up over this. If I did what the little demon on my shoulder told me to do, I would drop 500 on a new phone every three months and I would be sans girlfriend (she hates my phone problem).

I support this post.

Wow!

The anger, impatience and frustration is getting pretty thick in this thread.

*SHRUG & SIGH*

It comes when it comes. While I agree with most everyone that I would rather see it sooner than later, I also want it running right and loading right. I really don't want to deal with bricks, returns and refurbs.
