Along the lines of bugs appearing just after a successful installation of the leaked 2.1, I've noticed that the solution is often one of three things: either a specific fix posted in the "bugs and fixes" thread, or a reboot, sometimes with battery-pull, or (and this is the most interesting) the bug goes away following an overnight recharge and reboot.

The troubling thing, though, is that we're beginning to see reports, from users who've had the leak in for a while, of bugs cropping up unexpectedly in otherwise reliable areas of the phone: the browser, the keyboard, the phone-calling software, the ringers, etc.

These behaviors, the fixes and the unexpected appearance of new bugs, could be explained by realizing, once again ;), that what is being installed in your device was not intended to be installed until it was finished; it is a leak of a product that is still being worked on, no matter what is being said by some that it is the OTA, it is not.

If it were the OTA you would not have had to download a file and go through the steps outlined in the tutorial to install it: it would have come to your device over the air.

I know I'm new to this forum, but here is the reply I got from Verizon:

Soooo...is this " You have the option of contacting HTC at (866) 449-8358" and invitation by Verizon to call HTC Direct....

?

I wonder if it would get here any quicker if their phones were flooded.

Not that I'm in a hurry. I only read this thread like twice a week. Maybe 3 or 4 times.

So does anyone know if the Eris OTA goes out through the same channel as the Droid? If so, I guess at least a week before we could possibly see something :(

Yep ... I'd say it's very unlikely that the Eris will get an upgrade until they're through with the Droid.

But the good thing is -- it seems pretty certain that the OTA process was the main thing that was holding these upgrades up. If they've finally got that figured out, it's a good omen for the Eris.

Yep, looks like the Droid is on its way to 2.1 land.

Wrong Droid, but they did meet the Q1 promise for someone.

I should look this up, I'm wondering how many carriers have the Motorola Droid.

The fact that Verizon is one of them (the only?) should give hope to Eris users who want the upgrade and have been worried about Verizon not handling the push; there are a lot of Droids out there, going by the thread-counts in the Droid forums here at least.

That, too. ;)

So, I've seen several places that MOT uses bitfone for its OTA, but I haven't seen anything on HTC's update agent. Can anyone provide info?

I just hope that, whenever it comes, they've worked out all the bugs that have been reported in these forums. It doesn't really sound like a whole lot of work to do.

I may be wrong, but it seems that the Droid OTA is not the same as their most recent leak. Which probably means they've got new fixes in it. :)

No software is completely bug-free.

And you have to remember that many (probably most) of the issues being reported probably aren't the fault of the OS ... they're botched installs, or buggy apps, or someone suddenly noticing something that's been there all along, and deciding to blame it on the OS.

Danged right. +1, etc.. ;)

I agree. Being that the MOTO Droid update was postponed due to OTA issues, I think that the Eris will get its update next week, maybe even the week after at the latest.

If the Eris is using bitfone as the update agent, then it's almost a sure thing we won't get it until after the Droid is completed.

If we're really lucky, Verizon actually keeps their promise and releases it by 11:59:59 pm tomorrow. They have, after all, been promising us an update to 2.x since November 6 and Q1 2010 was announced in early December.

Oh well figures, I finally flash a the new 2.1 leak last night after thinking about it for a month and literally less than 12 hours later the Droid 2.1 upgrade officially starts signaling our wait is about to be over for the Eris OTA...LOL

Oh well, I'm enjoying messing around with the 2.1 leak and am looking forward to the "official" version as well. I guess the worst thing that could happen now (besides there not being an update at all) is the OTA won't work for all of us who installed the leak...forcing us to flash the new version...no big deal in the long run if you ask me.
