Eris to v2.x, when?

C'mon OTD...with your hot ass picture...when does an app update look like that? With the faster processor speed, better battery life, etc... I would think it was all BS if I didn't know the guy. He knew very little if anything at all about 2.1 before I explained it. I don't know- guess we'll see.

So the guy was messing with an app. Maybe an app that told him it could only run on 2.1? Because it requires faster processor speed. Maybe it force closed and he had to press OK?
Can you tell us which app it was?

True, an app update wouldn't say that. An OS update wouldn't change the processor speed though either and I doubt they would claim it would. Even if they were going to change the clock speed they wouldn't think of claiming better battery life at the same time.

Maybe I guess. I'll see what I can find out from him as far as the specifics with the app he was on.

I guess you would have a better idea than me but from how he was explaining it, sounded pretty crazy. Look, last thing I want to do is sound like some of the wack jobs on here. I have a strong feeling something happened on his phone tonight. Again, I don't really care if anybody believes me or if I'm even right about it. I just thought you guys would like to hear about it. I'll get more info tomorrow and check back with ya.

It sounds like an app update.

I does. I was startled for about 10 seconds yesterday morning when I did my "check in" routine; next to the usual triangular icon with the exclamation point was, "update available." <----- that's what my expression was.

I dragged the notification bar down and clicked: the whole list of apps I have came onto the screen... it was an update for my battery widget. <----- that was my next expression.

If your story is true, then it is possible something came to the device Over The Air, perhaps a fragment of the anticipated update sent out by mistake or as a test (which would be irresponsible on the part of those handling those things).

The telling thing in all of this will be, as usual, time.

Yea, I guess the werid thing is that he didn't have to drag down or press on anything for this transparent screen to appear. It was all automatic and popped up on it's own and spit some information about a 2.1 update. I promise you guys this is a true story. Really, I do have better things to do than come on here and make stuff up. I'm at work now but I'll see if anything happened with his phone during the night when I talk to him later.

Holy Christ, I can't believe this thread is still chugging along. Haven't been here in a while, gotta say I didn't really expect to see all the usual suspects, still discussing every internet rumor and customer service whisper... four months' worth of speculation!

Don't get me wrong, I'm hoping they eventually release the real 2.1 sometime in the very near future as well... but Jesus, haven't you folks gotten sick of reading fake rumors already? At the very least, I hope as the weather's gotten nicer, you've begun posting from your phones more frequently. Please don't sit inside on your computers all summer long, breathlessly reading fake rumors about our crappy little phone :)

I know I routinely get app updates on my Eris, but I've noticed the past couple of days that I've had an unusually large amount of them. Do you think many of these updates are getting the different apps ready for 2.1?

I've had a couple app updates do something similar. The first time you run them after the application update, they will pop up a transparent screen with the change log (what the new update (for the app) includes). Some of them do say something about fixing bugs or force closes or increased performance in version 2.1. I'll bet that's what he saw.

If he just got the Eris a few days ago, my guess is that is was actually one of the OTA updates for 1.5 that the rest of us got earlier. Honestly, the only other explanation is an overly-active imagination.

Regarding rgrant's story, I might believe him.
This morning at about 4:30, I got a call from somebody that works for me. So my phone was vibrating, I picked it up right as it stopped (missed the call) but when I looked at it, it had the same type of message. On the screen, saying something about an update. It covered about 3/4 of the screen. It was transparent. But you gotta remember, it was 4:30, and I was dead sleep. So I pushed the end button, and went back to sleep. It wasn't the normal "Update available" thing. It was definately one I've never seen before.

When I finally got up, I checked and there was nothing new. I did the 'checkin' thing, and still nothing new. So I have no idea what that was about.

Handcent just updated last night as well I bet thats what is being seen as the updated screen does that exact same thing.

I've noticed that too. I hope so. :)

i dont get why they would be updating the apps to make it ready for 2.1 when 2.1 has been available for other phones already. its not like theyre specifically updating it for the eris.

They may be updating the apps because 2.1 has been officially rolled out to so many phones now. There are a lot of Droids out there.

Updating the apps to make them 2.1 compatible is necessary with so many phones running it now. That doesn't necessarily mean it will be our turn any time soon. We can only hope.

Phandroid.com is saying that the Droid update should be completed by tomorrow. Maybe the Eris update will start soon.
