Root Eris

Bob Cat

Careful, They're sharp!!
So here's the deal. Got a eris from a friend that got an X because this phone was messing up on him and the V rep let him get the X before his contract was up because he said the Eris was out of life. So I've tried to get the market thru wifi and it say's I used the wrong password or whatever for the market. I know I've read on here somewhere of getting around that to access the market but don't remember where cause I didn't think I'd need it. I want to root it. Could one of you fine folks lead me to the right direction.:D

did you do a factory reset? if the phone still has all his data,it prolly wants his password

do a factory reset, then when the touch the android screen comes up,sign in with your google account and voila! :D

after thinkin on it for a minute,i thot id add this: you will have to add your wifi to sync with your google account. i sign in,it tries for a minute, then comes back with an error message that there is no data connection, and a button to change to wifi. touch that, and it will let you add your wifi and password(if your wifi is protected). then it will let you put in your password again and the sync will work.

hope that helps,BC :)

You da man. I'll give that a try when I get home.

How are you connecting to the internet?

My only internet is the V mobile broadband on my lap top. Can it broadcast a signal for the phone to pick up. I went to McDonald's and used there wifi because the phone would not pick up my wifi from the other phone. Look at my post this morning in the dummies thread.

bobcat,

I didn't get a chance to reply after our exchanges last night...did you double-check your wi-fi tethering app's version? It might be that a more current version will work on your "good" Eris to allow the test Eris to connect.

My Droid X version is, I believe the latest and greatest: v2.0.7 (this is the current version in the Market and/or is available here: android-wifi-tether - Project Hosting on Google Code). There is also v3.0 experimental version too (wifi_tether_v3_0-pre11.apk - android-wifi-tether - WiFi Tether for Root Users 3.0-pre11 *** EXPERIMENTAL *** - Project Hosting on Google Code=).

Cheers!

Scary did you see where the laptop connects fine from my wifi tethering but not two different phones, one being my test phone and the other a D2.

No, sorry, I missed that (in the Universal Root thread)... Still, if you are running an older version that might be keeping your Eris from connecting (like I said, my Droid X running the v2.0.7 version allowed my Eris to connect right away...which is what you want to do).

edit: I wish I had my Eris with me, then I could try restoring my "stock 2.1" Nandroid backup and verify that it too will still connect with my X... I'll try this tonight if you still don't have a resolution by then.

How do I get around activation.

The WiFi tethering app creates ad hoc WiFi connections on the Eris (as opposed to infrastructure, as you get with a WiFi router, or at McDonalds, or even with official tethering hotspot features from other VZW Android phones). Notebooks can connect to ad hoc connections, but it's very possible that the Eris cannot connect to ad hoc networks. I suppose that I should try one of these days.

Ok, did some research and that is likely the issue.

See http://androidforums.com/incredible...g/181601-connect-ad-hoc-wireless-network.html

Possible solution (do a Nandroid first): Nexus One connect to Ad hoc wifi? - Android @ MoDaCo

As for V Mobile broadband, I'm really not sure whether that can create an infrastructure type hotspot to share. I've never used one myself.

Does anybody know if you can tether over Bluetooth? I've never tried myself. Does the WiFi tether allow connectivity over BT instead?

doogald,

So are you saying that the wi-fi tethering app will work differently on the Eris vs. the Droid X? (edit: 'cause you saw I connected my Eris to my Droid X last night w/o a problem?).

I can believe this and might have read things related to this before (due to radio and/or library software (rild) differences between various phones).

I really have never known too much about "ad hoc" network connectivity vs. infrastructure mode (but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express once ;)).

bobcat, don't forget, you always have the Android SDK / adb option that we discussed last night...(c'mon, the SDK is "fun" :D).

Cheers!

sweet! i had faith in you BC! :D

what are you gona do with this phone? if you plan to root it,you should run the "root" PB00IMG file to get the S-OFF bootloader first.

im a little late to the game, and you got it figured out allready. whenever i load custom roms,it never bugs me to activate... that part slipped my mind a lil.

on the wifi,i havent tried to run my eris from my inc or droid 1,but all 3 have run my ipod just fine. scary and i are waitin... how did you solve the internet issue? :)

Ok fellas here's the skinney.
1. I did a factory reset
2. Phone wanted me to activate:mad:
3. Scary was so kind as to link me to a possiable solution:)
4. The touching four corners on the screen didn't work:mad:
5. Pressing activate, then the menu, then the back button did:)
6. The job I was working at had wifi and the phone connected:)
7. Getting past the activation allowed me to sign in to my account:)
8. I downloaded Gscript Lite, ES File Explorer, Gscript.zip, Gscript-sa-171.zip;), GSB 2.0, Gapps:)
9. Got home, rooted, flashed GSB 2.0, Gapps, rebooted, Ba Bam:D
10. Installed Scary's trackball not required;):D
11. Turned on wifi on my daily driver Eris and my (test) Eris is connected to wifi, Ba Bam Ba Bam:D:D:D:D
Apparently a stock phone will not show a wifi connection from a rooted phone with wireless wifi but another rooted phone will.;):D
Now that gives you techy guys something to ponder on.:)

Lastly when I booted GSB it told me without a data connection it will ask me to activate each time I turn the phone back on.

lol...that's a great summary! :) Love the emoticon annotations at each step!

Yeah, I'll bet doogald or eu1 can explain the ad-hoc or infrastructure network connectivity personalities of a stock phone...I'm gonna pass on researching that stuff for now :D.

Also, I'm running GSB 1.6 on mine and it doesn't ask me for activation...maybe because I've never done a factory reset on my phone...?

Cheers!

So am I.

That terrible pseudo-catch 22 - you need to root in order to wifi tether a phone without phone service; you need access to wifi in order to get the files you need to root from the phone without service*

* - not really - you could download with the active phone to SD and then swap the SD cards. Just sayin'.

Ummm I did ask that question before I went thru all that. Post#801 dummies thread.;)

Lol...I did read it and never thought of just moving the SD card--even though you said it!

I've never actually popped my SD card out of my Eris (or my X, for that matter)...never had a reason to...

Sometimes the simplest things...:D, sigh ;)

wow thats more smilie-guys than you can shake stick at,BC! thats really wierd abut the activation. seems i maybe had that on the stock rom when i first got my phone, but i havent seen it since. ive also never seen that message about the data connection

you could also plug that sucker into your puter  many ways to skin the "get files to an inactive phone" cat ;)

a friend bought a rooted eris on craiglist that he couldnt activate. it was running kaos froyo and the seller claimed it would not connect to his pc to download a new rom(he thot he needed an update from kaos v37 or whatever in order to activate it  )

so heres what i did:
1) after much fiddling and cussing figured out that his pc prollem was a bad usb cable :rolleyes:
2)plugged it into the pc :)
3)transfered the nand of my stock rom to it :)
4)booted into recovery on new eris and restored my transfered nand
5)turned of my eris and activated it(he wanted to use it as a real phone, not a wifi eris,so i wanted to make sure it would activate :p;) )
6) ran the root PB00IMG file to get it s-off.
7) plugged it back into the pc and trasnfered jcases 1 click app to it
8) ran the app and re-rooted :D
9) instaled tracball optional recovery, ala scary
10)put some of my roms on the sd card for him to try.
11)bada-bing,bada-boom,zip zing gave him back his functioning, rooted eris and gave him a quick tutorial about rom flashing

last and not least you are limited to 30 smilies in a post apparently :D
