Help Error: "Check for update is not available" anybody else?

Backup methods exist, but, to backup application data you need to be rooted. So that may not be an option here.

... and if he started from an undamaged environment.

The ideal would be to make the backup, diddle and cause the problem, then restore to the known good backup.

In this case he might (or might not) be able to get a "good" backup. He might recover and restore the problem into the new environment.

As you point out he would also have to root and install a new app to perform the backup.

I am prejudiced.

Whenever I am confronted with one of these recovery without a rock solid backup issues I am always of the opinion that the fastest thing to do is to start from scratch.

I keep the distribution copies of the software and instead of copying installed software onto a new machine I reinstall it from scratch.

The reason is not obvious ... experience has taught me that the toughest bugs to solve are caused by copying an old bug from the old environment to the new one.

The second benefit is that everyone has trash lying around that they just never got around to removing. With the reinstall from scratch approach you simply don't reinstall it.

Completely understood. I'm a software engineer and have done more windows installs/reinstalls than I care to count. :) My friends are always hitting me up for fixing their machines. A carefully controlled backup saves time even with a fresh start. The trick to that is *CAREFULLY CONTROLLED*. That's really the hard part that gets you the big bucks. :D Cause you're right, very easy to reintroduce the same problems back into the clean environment. First thing i did when I rooted my Bionic was to create a nandroid backup. I used that this weekend after unbricking my phone. Now I'm on 901 and haven't had any problems at all. And yes, I took nandroid backups along the way. :) I like being cautious....it saves time later when you completely screw yourself. :D

Titanium backup for root users is, as the name implies, for rooted users, and is pretty much used all the time for making backups that can be restored later.

Other than that, the only thing I can think of is to pull an old script I wrote for the DROID to pull the files via adb from the phone when connected to your computer....

I saw someone had written a batch file to simplify it a bit in another forum just recently, and it reminded me of when I did mine, but I'd have to verify first that the script works on these phones (locations might have changed, but I doubt it). Also, I have no way (currently) in the script to back up downloaded app data....

It'll be a pita, but tonight I will just save all my files/pictures to my PC, then take pics of all of my pages and then do a factory reset and see if it OTAs me the update when completed. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

Wait. Pics and stuff you don't need to worry about - a factory reset erases your phone's internal data, as in the application data, not the stuff stored like pics and such. Those get saved to /sdcard and /sdcard-ext - completely separate from the internal.

I realize that this is confusing, as the Files manager app refers to the /sdcard as internal storage and /sdcard-ext as SDCard - but both of those make it through the factory reset process.

It's only /data and /cache that get erased when performing a Factory Data reset.

You have the option to wipe both when you do a factory reset, which I did. It worked, I am now updated. I figured I should just go ahead and clear everything out, so I chose to wipe the phone's internal and the SD card. As soon as the phone booted back up, I went into check for update and it prompted me with the update.

Success.

Congratulations. That is great news.

It also SUX. It sure would be great to know what was getting reset by the Factory Data Reset. It would be great to get one of those non-updating Bionics side-by-side with one that is updated and step through the settings. Maybe something obvious would just jump out ... like ... Settings | Storage settings | Disable storage install (mine is unchecked).
