Error while making a backup image of /data!

My Nandroid backup is failing with "Error while making a backup image of /data!"

I'm using CWM Manager v3.15 and have 27Gb free space on external sdcard, any assistance most appreciated.

Regards

John

What ROM/kernel is installed? Have you tried booting into Recovery and running a backup from there? Any new apps installed since the last successful backup?

Something that might prove an easy fix..... wipe dalvik-cache, do a "fix permissions" and then retry the backup.

Thanks, no joy, still getting same error, I've never been able to do a successful nandroid backup, I'm booting into recovery mode to do the backup, anything else I could try / check ?

Have you tried backing up to internal storage (from Recovery)? There's a thread on XDA here concerning a similar problem, and one solution was using the internal rather than external SD card.

Another thing to try would be backing up the external card to PC, formatting it in the handset then retrying the backup.

The ultimate sanction would be a factory reset followed by formatting /system and /data and reflashing the firmware/kernel, but that's obviously something to be avoided if possible. ;)

Thanks for the tips slug, ultimately I'm wanting to install JB 4.1.2, if I am unable to carryout a Nandroid backup, is it safe enough for me to take a current TB backup and just wipe and go for it then batch reinstall my apps onto JB ?

I wouldn't feel happy doing it in case I encountered problems and needed to revert, but ultimately it's your call. I installed the newly-released NeatROM like that and it worked fine, apart from a couple of apps that stalled during restore. Those I reinstalled from Google Play and restored the data only afterwards.

Thanks for the help, backup to internal sd failed same error, I'll try a format as well, I. agree I would be my happier with a full backup.

Just a thought my S2 is still locked to O2 would that have any bearing ?

Have you tried flashing a custom kernel and seeing if the backup works after. It doesn't happen too often but you will find the odd cfroot kernel which has a few problems.

Thanks for the advice shotgun, I haven't tried that yet, I'm afraid I'm still very green, I think I need to read up more to understand the mechanics.

It's pretty straight forward. It's the exact same procedure as flashing a rom with cwm except you don't need to perform any wipes.

If you're a bit unsure you could flash the siyah kernel. It has a .tar version so you can put it in Odin and its exactly the same as when you flashed the cfroot kernel.

I hope I'm not to late with this one. Be careful with gokhanmoral's download page as it has siyah versions for the gs2 and gs3 so make sure you get the right one.

No not to late, still processing all this great advice.

I may search to see if there is a nandroid backup log file, it may help determine where the problem is.

I I had a look at gokhanmorals S2 dl Page, there is a comment -

Stephen: Many thanks again for such excellent work! A Caution to other hard-core updaters: this kernel is not yet compatible with the leaked Samsung JB*release.

As my ultimate goal is to install JB 4.1.2, I'm not sure how to progress.

You will be able to flash siyah for the purpose of making a nandroid backup. After your backup is made and you flash jb the siyah kernel will be replaced by a compatible one

Thanks Shotgun, got Siyah installed, currently trying a nandroid backup, if this works will be must happier moving onto JB :)

Well, good job; nandroid backup completed ok using Siyah kernel and AFV app confirms all tickety-boo.

What do you think chaps, i've got my Nandroid, TB and .efs backups, anything else you could recommend before I go for it and drop JB 4.1.2 onto me S2 ?

P.S I'm still network locked to O2, is this a problem ?
