Help essive data useage - Rogue app?

Hi guys and girls

I'm new to this forum but I'm hoping some knowledgable folk will be able to help me out. Both my Girlfriend and I have HTC desires on vodafone here in the UK. Whilst mine is fine hers has been using an excessive amount of data. If the last 2 days it has used approx 250mb over the mobile network! I've had a look at it and can't work out what's going on. She's a teacher so doesn't really have time during the day to do that much surfing and at home it hooks up to our wifi.

The only thing I can think of is that there's a rogue app or virus on it that's running in the background and eating data like it's going out of fashion (do these even exist?) Also, and I think this is probably related, her battery runs out extremely quickly. I think the only thing she has different to me is a majong (sp) game but reviews of that seemed pretty safe.

Does anyone on here have any ideas what might be the problem. To save running over her 500mb limit we've turned the mobile connection off for the time being but that does kind of defeat the point of having these fancy phones!

Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated

Dan

I had the same problem where my data usage was going through the roof (also in the UK). I used 3G WatchDog to find it was an application call Animated Weather (or something like that) that was killing my data usage (approx 20 MB perday). I removed that app and all is good now.

The phoneusage app gives you a nice pie chart of your total data usage, split up into segments representing apps. So you can immediately see which apps are using loads of your data.

It could be that your GF is watching streaming videos, or gaming a lot. And does that over a mobile data connection (phone: 2G, 3G, etc.). This would eat into her data plan as you describe, and will rapidly exceed the carrier's "fair use policy" cap. She should be watching streaming videos and games only when she's on a WiFi net if she wants to limit her mobile data usage.

If she installs the 'Y5' app (free from the Market) her phone will automatically (re-)connect to WiFi hotspots she was connected to before. Very convenient. Prevents her forgetting to switch when she gets home, or to work, or to a fav bar/caf

We both have 3g watchdog but can't find the function where you can see what is actually using your data. Is it only available on the pay version as we're on the free one at the moment?

I don't think she's streaming videos, as i said she doesn't really have the time and it connects to our wifi automatically when at home.

Cheers for the help everyone, if I find out what the problem was I'll let you knw

PhoneUsage. Get this app, i mentioned it just before, it will tell you which apps are using your data.

Hi everyone

I am really puzzled about the data usage on my new Desire phone.

I just downloaded NetworkUsage and Stats Free to monitor the amount of MB I am using. Stats Free says that a Youtube video lasting 3 minutes uses 15MB of data on Wifi. What?!? I ran the video several times with the same result. Everything I do seems to clock up massive amount of data, including Googling and normal surfing on the net. Loading one page just used 1MB!

I also measured usage on 3g, which was similar but I didn't try it out very many times, or I will overshoot my 1GB quota in no time.

If I leave the phone idle, it just uses a few KB and I guess this is normal.

My husband has a Desire too and we use them about the same amount. Hardly heavy users. Stats Free tells him he has only used 200MB on wifi in the last 30 days.

Anyone have an explanation???

best, M
