Even though 3D phones seem gimmicky...

to a lot of us... Aren't you guys happy that Android phones beat the Iphone to the punch? Even if the 3D aspect of the new Evo turns out to be just a novelty feature, I think its pretty cool that something besides the Iphone is bringing new innovations to the cell phone world.
 
Just watch, the new iPhone 5 will also have 3d, but youll see Apple market it as if they invented 3D technology. I honestly like apple products, i just hate apple marketing.
 
I don't think iphone will be 3d but they will definitely revolutionize NFC because all the banks will test out nfc with iphones first.

Less tech savvy people dont realize androids superiority and higher market share. They wrongly believe iphone is the best phone.

You are absolutely right, NFC will be made popular by the iPhone, and most people will believe that Apple invented the hardware and concept of NFC technology. That's just how it is. When someone wonders why I hate Apple consumers so much, it is because they believe so many falsehoods, try to convince other people of it, and believe they are more tech savvy than other with this knowledge.

OMG is this not the truth. I'll skip out on ever owning an iPhone.

Back on topic, 3D phone seems like a huge gimmick to me. Much like the 3D HDTVs that are being sold. 3D to me isn't some awesome thing. Even in IMAX theaters it makes me feel a bit sick. I'm hoping that you can have the 3D effect on the home display turned off.
 
I actually like 3D, but I sure as hell won't buy a phone on the sole fact that it has 3D. It's a selling point that actually sells and excites consumers. It's a fad really; think about when HDTVs came out. It was a fad, and once it caught on, everything and it's mother had "HD" tacked on to it's product name (I may be exaggerating, but you get the point).
 
Let me ask everyone this question. If you had a choice between the Evo 3D as it was announced or as it was announced minus the 3D screen and second cam but with a kickstand which would you choose?

I am leaning towards with 3D and I am on the side of its kind of gimmicky. I don't think they sacrificed much else to add in the 3D functionality and its much easier to add back in the kickstand (i.e. case) than to get 3D after the fact.

The way I see it HTC added a parallax barrier, a second cam, and had to make some software modifications to get 3D. If they didn't have 3D the parallax barrier could be removed which could make it the tiniest bit thinner not a big deal to me, they could remove the extra cam which would allow for a kickstand or a slightly larger battery, either of which would be nice but its a crap-shoot for me, and lastly save some time on software which seems all but irrelevant since I don't feel like they skimped somewhere else in the software.

So while I would never take 3D at the expense of heavily sacrificing performance/features everywhere else in this case it seems like more of a bonus than a huge trade.

I agree with you. I think getting anything on Iphone is good :) MHL is looking to be a pretty awesome first as well. I think being able to charge your phone from your TV set and Stream media as a win.

Today it's a gimmick. However, I bet if the 2012 Evo ships without 3D, there will be gnashing of teeth, and great wailing.

After owning a 3D phone for a few months, I am certain many wont want to live without it, especially with youtube and blockbuster on board.

After the Evo 3D drops there are sure to be thousands of hi-def 3D vids uploaded to youtube before the year is over.
 
Well what so gimmicky about it ? I just look at it as another feature option for the individuals who wants that feature. Some where saying the same about the kickstand now folks can't stop wanting it. I know one thing that EVO 3D is one of the best phones that I see being demo without any problems .

Eh, yes and no. It's handy in a hotel (that has a nice flat panel with proper hdmi ports). Outside of that I think most people that have the technology to even plug their phone in will have the technology in their entertainment center to stream all of this stuff anyway. Certainly it will be attractive to some, but I don't think it will be a media center replacement as you seem to be implying.

Well I don't think it's a matter of it exciting anyone. I think many will purchase the phone because the overall specs is good. 3D is just part of the phone just like having a kickstand, you don't have to used it but it's there.

Right. I was responding to you asking why 3D is gimmicky. If it helps, ad the following to my original response: "People think 3D is gimmicky on the HTC EVO 3D because..." That sure clear things up, yes? ;)

FWIW, a TON of people said the kickstand was gimmicky prior to the OG EVO launch, and remember how proud HTC was about their kickstand feature? Who knows, maybe 3D will share the same fate!
 
3D movies are more profitable. It's the consumer demand that's driving manufacturers to incorporate 3D into everything. So, it might not be as gimmicky as you may personally think.

WRT the Evo 3G, what made it not gimmicky for me was the stereo camera setup. If it were just about the display, I wouldn't care about it too much. But the fact that I can generate 3D content is very cool. It means that if one day 3D display technology gets even better, i'll already have source video ready for it.

For people who don't do a lot of personal content generation, I can see how none of this is very relevant.
 
Would people really rather have a kickstand than 3D screen and 2 rear camera? I dont really plan on ever using the feature, but its neat to have.

It would have been better if they just went with 1 camera that blew away the competition.
