Ever been called FAKE iPhone?

I've been noticing a trend in tech lately from my friends and others about my phone. I love my HTC Desire, I think its one of the best phones out there and definately one of the best I've owned. To start off, I love android, and I definately do appreciated iPhone's simplicity and ease of use. But what I don't understand is why people start labelling phones as "fake" compared to the iPhone.

Every day, atleast one person looks at my Desire and say, hey its a fake iPhone or why do you have a fake iPhone? Just get the real thing.

At first, I didn't really care, but until today, its been just simply irritating and annoying to hear such ridicule. I don't hate the iPhone, I just don't understand why you're calling MY phone fake. My phone can do more and better at most tasks the iPhone can do. (Vice Versa)

I'll give you an example, Its like saying

Hey! You have a wanna-be Benz! When your Lexus car is most likely as functional and high class as a Benz

Nice Fake LV bag! When its a Chanel bag that is probably equally expensive or even more expensive.

Anyone noticing the same thing? Not restricting to the desire, other phones as well. Its quite annoying actually...

yeah, i have heard this too.
its just because the Iphone is such a big brand for reasons i cant understand.
Maybe coz they have more Advertisements then Android?
People just dont know Android, i think thats all it is.

It is in Canada.

When my iPhone friends say this I proceed to explain that my phone has way more options than theirs does.

Whenever I get picked on I just brag how great not having at&t is. If making fun if your phone is the best thing they have to do then let them do so. PS, not having to use itunes to work your phone is faaaaantastic!

People are idiots. They believe the hype and always believe their iproduct to be the first of type.

HTC and smart phones existed long before iPhones, but its the marketing. Before iPhone, only people who were current or interested knew what a phone could do. Now, you just need to watch tv.

Similarly, tablets were around years ago but again, not common knowledge. Apple revived that huge flop of a product and made it successful. Why? Marketing. Bringing it to the average Jo (and by average, I mean mode obviously).

These products are not the best in their categories and not the first either, but they're easy to use and highly desirable for people who want to use technology without having to bother understanding it.

Bottom line, don't be offended by people calling your desire a fake iPhone. They don't know what they're talking about and are much more susceptible to marketing and peer pressure than they would like to believe.

Just ask them why they have an iPhone and what they think is so good about it and ask for examples.

I find that a lot of iPhone users have difficulty justifying their purchase. Also as an Ex iPhoner I know what it can and more often can't do so enjoy putting them right on a few things.

But the main reason I left iPhone was that everyone now seems to have them, so don't push the Desire that hard, I like to be a bit different :D

I think the iphone is a wonderful device for kids. Looks stylish, able to extract tons of cash from parents, unbreakable unless you have a windows PC and use itunes or drop it from a height over two inches. Able to stop creativity and thinking amongst its user base.

Has an inbuilt ability of smugness. Its able to convince the user that its best because it costs more and sends out a neural transmitter that blocks sane rational thought.

Im surprised its not more popular.

I was showing my best friend a video at the cafeteria with my phone, then she asked what kind of HTC it is then some guy said "It looks like a physically modified iPhone!"

W. T. F.

I'd have replied "Yeah and you're a physically modified Brad Pitt, physically modified with a baseball bat!"

OP, Never had anyone say this to me, but IF I ever do I'll just give them the stock, "Get a life dude, it's a phone!" or simply the "stare"

I love when people tell me I've bought a fake Iphone and that the Iphone was the first of it's kind with a superiour touchscreen!

It gives me the opportunity to argue with them and eventually they lose.
Why? Because of the restrictions, jailbreaking, marketing and like Danfrance said, not the first of it's kind.

To be fair, I used to have this problem. I was working in the summer and everyone saw my Desire and asked about it. They then went on to say that it was rubbish compared to an iPhone or Blackberry. I didn't bother to argue with them.

Then come this Christmas, I saw that there was a big increase in the number of people carrying android phones. Obviously being the bigger man, I didn't say anything. However, one thing I can say is that give it time and Android will come dominate the market. Google's selling point is mainly through word of mouth in the UK and is has effectively worked only recently have I started to see adverts for android phones.

To be honest, I heard of HTC before but didn't know much about them so I shied away and bought the iPhone 3G since it was well known (does that make me an idiot?), and put up with the Apple control center (iTunes), and lack of disk drive mode.
:(

Exactly. Once I got my hands on a decent Android device (HTC Legend) and saw what it could do, I was hooked. I got rid of the iPhone and used the Legend for a month until the Desire was available here. My wife now has the Legend (with stock Froyo too) and loves it - it's always with her and she's always playing with it. She brags to friends how much better it is over the iPhone too!

And when someone asks about my phone, I tell them it's like an iPhone but much more functional and with much more instant information - widgets just blow them away when they see what my phone does just sitting on the table.
:D
Yup, it's Android only for me now. I'll never own an iPhone again, and neither will my wife.
:p

I agree...Android is starting to sell really well, partly due to performance, and largely due to advertising. I never saw an HTC ad before, but the last few months I've seen lots. I've also noticed the last few months Android phones are much more common in the mall. I think the problems iPhone 4 had really cut their sales and a lot of teenagers are carrying Desires, Legends, and Galaxy S phones instead of iPhones.

I can see it won't be long before Android overtakes Apple in phone sales. This past year has seen a huge jump in market share.

According to the latest Neilsen figures Android is on the verge of overtaking both RIM and Apple as THE smartphone of choice by consumers in the US.......

Interesting to note that Apple has seen a consistent sales figure over the period of june-nov starting at 27% and ending at 28% (Note, NO real rise in terms of market share, possible market stagnation?). RIM started at 34% and ended at 26% (there may be trouble ahead). Android started in Jun with a 15% share and ended in Nov with a 26% share (nuff said me thinks).

It'll be interesting to see what the Holiday sales throw up as well.......Just dont tell your iOS buddies the news, they'll be like lemmings looking for the nearest cliff top ;)

Never had anyone say this. In fact quite the opposite. Every single iphone user i have spoken too have said they are fed up with the iphone, wished they had a Desire and that their next purchase would be a HTC. I am finding that HTC is now being recognised as the best for smart phones.

I guess the lack of multi tasking, dropped calls, apps that cost money on itunes but free on android, boring home pages, restrictive op system and missed alarms is getting to them

Ugh, some guy at the mall says, there's a lot of iPhone and iPad ripoffs. It's not the first of its kind you know. Stupid Apple marketing.

Bah, you'd only be an idiot if you bought iPhone because you weren't aware of android then slagged off android users because you had an iPhone ;)

This is my first android. Only my second smartphone. Had a blackberry bold 9000 before.

Before that I had dumbphones.

I say dumb, but had basic browsers and email capabilities...

Was wanting smartphones for a while but the symbian phones om offer to me were ugly as hell.

First phone I wanted was the HTC touch diamond but winmo? Nah.

After getting and rooting a hero for the missus, I knew what was coming next....

On twitter i read a story that a girl approached someone with the desire and told him: This is the new iPhone?? Oh, it's cool!!!

My iFriends say that desire is better but they keep/buy the iPhone for the simpicity and to showoff
