"EVO 3D Oval Office"

People bought a phone brand, spanking new, Sprint decides to change their 4G networking, and everyone is then forced to take a used phone with the upgraded chips, all because of Sprints bad foresite. I just don't think this would fly for everyone, and public image is everything.

Also, aren't we looking at a couple million EVOs sold so far? I know it has hit at least 1 million, and I think that is lowballing it. Thats $50 million right there in EVOs alone. This doesn't count their other 4G devices (including USB modems, hotspots, etc.) Major cash, as I said above.
Well the brand spanking new devices would all have the new radios in them. So those people wouldn't need to change anything. And you can bet there would be plenty of Evo/Epic/Shift/3D owners who wanted the hot new 4G phone.

As for the people getting the refurbs- they wouldn't be trading in a brand spanking new phone. They would be trading in the used phone that they bought 6 months ago, and getting a refurb in return.

$50 mil is a lot of cash, no doubt. But it's a drop in the bucket compared to the billions their network optimization project is costing. They could easily add this to the budget (and it is probably already budgeted in anyway).

I was referring to people who had purchased a phone, say a month before the switch, and are then "forced" to send it back in. Still, I don't know how I feel about the justification that you aren't anything different with a used phone being that the phone you are sending back would technically be used. At the end of the day I am the one that used it, I controlled its destiny. It's basically why used products, in brand new condition, generally don't bring in nearly as much cash as a genuinely new product.

Also, I said $50 mil, but that number is complete conjecture. It could be way less, but I am betting it would actually be way more. I mean they would literally have to set up an infrastructure where these phones are partially rebuilt. Frankly, I just don't see it happening. If the switch to LTE happens, I see them having people ride out their contracts on WiMax and allowing them to upgrade to an only LTE phone when their upgrade time is up.

Well supposedly they will be selling a dongle that splits them into 2 seperate connections (HDMI and USB). But in addition to that, the port on the Evo 3D is supposedly a MHL port which supposedly charges the device even while you are connected to a device through HDMI.

Only trouble here is it has to be a compatible HDMI port for it to charge. Unless people are going to go out and buy new equipment, this will be a no go for the majority of consumers for the life of the phone no doubt.

Well I'm sure the phones they are selling would be LTE capable long before the switch is flipped. So in a sense, I guess we're saying the same thing. I just don't see a scenario where Sprint tells people "either buy a new phone or take your business elsewhere." I see Sprint selling LTE phones for a while, and at some point they turn the Wimax off- exactly what they are doing with iDEN with their currently underway Network Optimization plan. And when they actually turn Wimax off, they will either let everyone exchange their Wimax phone for an LTE phone, give them a ridiculously great deal on a new LTE phone, or they will somehow convert their Wimax phone to an LTE phone.

Supposedly any HDMI 1.4 port will charge it. This was a big sticking point for me but someone posted that any HDMI 1.4 port should charge it, as per the HDMI 1.4 specification. So if that is true then it shouldn't be too big of an issue. Not everything is HDMI 1.4, but just about everything sold today is (my tv and receiver are both HDMI 1.4).

I don't view it as telling people to take their service elsewhere. People are already constantly signing up for the 4G enabled devices without 4G in their areas. As long as Sprint doesn't take 4G away from people that already have it, I think it would be a smooth transition. Heck, they may even offer upgrade discounts for those that want an LTE device right away alongside the option of keeping your current phone on the current wimax plan until your upgrade time is up. In either case, I think both of us are looking a bit too deeply into this. We can be sure if Sprint does hop on the LTE bandwagon we will know what their intents are, as far as getting their current customrs taken care of, ahead of time.

Great post! I'm still wondering why they couldn't get they kickstand on the battery door though. Hopefully there will still be that option. But yeah this will definitely draw more people towards the phone. I for one was contemplating whether to get it because of it's lack of a kickstand. When I first saw the shots of it, I promise my heart dropped haha. But now I'm completely sold. Ah, it feels great to be a Sprint Customer once more.

that is great...

but that kickstand is huge... why so phat?
it looks to be metal.. which will add wieght.

i know .. nit picking...

this would be great.. if it also just replaces the back cover all together. so it will not add to much thickness...

You can see on that pic that link that it's clearly a case that would go on the back of the device (not a replacement battery door). Even though it looks like they made it fairly thin, I still think it'll add too much bulk for my tastes.

On top of that, it was pointed out in another thread that the charging port would be on the bottom of the phone, while it's propped up on the kickstand. So there would be no way to use the kickstand AND charge at the same time.

I like the look to be honest and it doesn't seem thicker or if it is it deff isn't thicker than the lip caused by the camera's(one reason I love my case is that it makes the back flat).

The one grip I have is that that case makes it to where you can't charge it and have it on the stand at the same time. the cut out is for the camera button and switch. They should make the stand where it can flip out to either direction so you can stand it up on either side.

That is my gripe too. Hopefully when this is released the charging port is on the bottom of the device and not the side.

That'd be insanely nice BlackDynamite, but I get the feeling that it won't happen. As others have said, the whole issue of possibly having a dock, and I just can't imagine the physical unit changing too much at this point.

Personally I like the width. The stubby little thing on our current EVO makes the phone all too easy to knock over. On a completely flat surface I have to be pretty delicate if I actually want to control anything on screen or else it will tip over, especially when touching the leftmost end (in landscape) of the device.

You know, I just thought of something. If a third party makes an extended battery that makes the back case completely flat with a kickstand built in I think I would be sold. I never liked the solutions they had for extended batteries on the OG EVO. Seidio has a chance to get it right. Completely flush guys! That's what looks good!

To be completely honest, I'd take a slightly reduced bill (get rid of that BS $10/mo fee) and screw the 4G. For MOBILE data, 3G is perfectly fine, I think, for the vast majority of consumers. We are getting to a point where 4G isn't really implemented that well, yet all top end phones have it equipped.

Up until a few months ago, I would have been fine sitting on 3G with Sprint, but Sprint's 3G speed had been in the dumps. If I get 600kb down, it's time to celebrate because these days 200kb down is about it. Other times, it's worse then a dialup connection.

I want reliable data of 1mb down and 500kb up as minimums... Sprint's just not there these days and it's been getting worse... I've also been seeing posts, in other places, where Sprint acknowledges data issues, but won't even give an ETR. On Sprint's FB page, people are screaming about problems in Va and Mi.

Whatever is needed to connect to your computer will be included, as always. You may have to buy a new hdmi cable, but I would be very surprised if they didn't include the dongle with the phone, HTC has a long history of providing any adapters necessary.

They have a long history of not providing the adapters too. I have purchased a few adapters to connect headphones to HTC phones, before all of their phones started shipping with 3.5mm jacks.

I think they should spend an extra 20 cents on the phones and put another port on the bottom that does the same as the one on the side. That way, you're covered, no matter what position the phones sits. And personally, I like the charging port on the bottom because when I'm in the car and talking on the phone, I don't like a cord sticking out the side. Another benny is that if one of the ports come lose, like the usb port on the EVO 4G, you still have the 2nd port to charge/connect with.

My my my, my my my my my.

Welcome to our our newcomers, we here at AndroidForums hope you'll stay and continue to contribute. We're all in this together and your voice in the Android community is important and it belongs here. :)

So - let's cover a few points -

  • Are there no mods on these boards?
    • Certainly! :) But - by coincidence, a few of us are traveling today, and my what a busy day for this thread. :)
  • Do I, a mod, support BSOD?
    • Long before this thread - with it's most cromulent title - ever came about, I formed MY opinion only:
      • BSOD has followed the posting rules and has remained polite at all times
      • He has made some good predictions and some bad ones
    • In my book, if someone follow the rules, stay polite, gets some stuff right and some stuff wrong - then I don't much care if someone works at HTC or is channeling the Easter Bunny visiting Elvis at the Pony Parade, they're in bounds to have a voice
  • How about the posting history?
    • Well - I think that we all have some days that we might one day want to take back. This thread is rather heavy on examples, if you sit and read the last four pages straight, as I just have. ;)
  • EarlyMon has been in support of BSOD!
    • I give everyone the benefit of the doubt - it's free, it builds goodwill - and I think we've all days where we've give an arm for the benefit of the doubt
    • Where I've had some excitement, I was clear on that, where I had some disappointment, I was clear on that as well - and I've been quiet on a number of points, meaning - I've been quiet on a number of points
    • I have said first and foremost -
      • We can agree
      • We can agree to disgree
      • No need to make it personal
      • It will all come out in the wash
  • Anything I'm not telling?
    • If you know me, the answer is - very probably.

For some, the wash is done, it's already clear, he's a troll. Ok - I totally respect that.

For some, the jury may still be out, tech can take strange turns. Ok - I can totally respect that.

No need for me to say what I think everyone knows, but, that's my trademark, so what the heck - the wheels grind slowly, but they grind exceedingly fine.

WaSTeLaND and myself both said we'd have a factory Froyo by July's end, 2010. We were called names, questioned and laughed at, but we were right.

I predicted we'd have Gingerbread by now - it didn't happen and the worst thing was dan330 wanting to toss some eggs (gotta admit, a good response) - but no one got terribly bent.

I just don't see BSOD getting more wrong or right than us other Great Predictors - so, srsly, let's chum up and enjoy the ride, regardless of which side of the aisle you sit. :) ;)

I think the Evo 3D is shaping up to be: rather interesting.

I still don't understand how people (including mods) still take this fool seriously. Please, take a careful read of his convoluted and, at times, nonsensical posts and ask yourself:

Can someone who types like this really hold three doctorates and be a vice president?

"new" instead of "knew"
"there" instead of "their"
Nevermind this: "Excellent example how fast technology moves and the next few months not going to be any easier."

You guys are all being played and I still can't believe people are still defending him. I doubt this guy has finished college, let alone high school.

To BSOD: I must salute you though, that was one of the best trolling effort I've seen in my time and trust me, I've seen many.

Well mos people who aren't extremely gullable took to pocketing his info nuggets almost like a rumor. What myself and others did give Blue was the benefit of doubt. It avoids arguments and lets the individual show if he's legit or not. By yesterday's announcement and Blue not showing on stage it was clear. Of coarse many people bring up potential flaws in arguments because if your saying Blue's a liar your most likely correct. Agreeing with flawed facts that may not be true or what you say isn't possible is a 100% -possible-, well. Then we'd just feed iggnorance and false info to bring one man down.

Its like putting aside your dignity just to drop 4chan down a notch.

Ah yes, but when they did not include the 3.5mm jack they were shipping the phones with somewhat decent stereo earbuds. If I remember correctly, my Touch Pro included a 3.5 adapter though.

well.. just to discuss the on stage thing..

if the company did hose him.. and he lost 3 months of development... and the new phone was nothing he is familiar with.... last minute changes and all.

would he still be scheduled to go on stage to talk???
what would he be talking about?? his whole presentation would be FUBR'ed.

that is if he was being honest. ;)
