Root Evo 4g constant restart

A friend of mine tried rooting his Evo and apparently missed a step somewhere, he can boot into android but it restarts after about 30 seconds, he tried unrooting it, and managed to get s-on, but got stuck there, so he handed it off to me...I've tried flashing stock ROM, and it does without any errors, but I still get the restarts and recovery goes to a red exclamation point, it won't stay on long enough to use revoltuionary, so I can't s-off, stock rom obviosly isn't flashing correctly, any ideas? It's 2.3 with hboot 2.16.

ok the reason why you get the red exclamation point is because you do not have a custom recovery. in order to get one you need to have s-off. if you can get to hboot(bootloader) then try selecting clear storage. this will do a factory reset of your phone. if that does not work then you might need to take the phone in. not much you can do without a custom recovery.

That just closes after opening, gonna try stock ruu and pray..no idea what he did, mine rooted in 5-6 minutes, no problems whatsoever...

I have a feeling that when I flash stock rom, that its just flashing over the top of whats already on there, is there anyway to wipe and start new?

Not without a custom recovery, but at this point using the RUU is about your only option.

Theres a link to the computer exe file in the gingerbread for dummies guide.

On a side note when I plug into PC I get drivers not sucessfully installed and its looking for Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM.......I'm about to give up

its downloaded, but now the PC does not want to recognize the phone, downloaded the HTC drivers from the guide and it still keeps asking for the qualcomm thing, gonna try to reflash the stock rom one more time and if it doesnt work, he'll have to take it to sprint I guess, I'm out of ideas, still can't imagine how this happened, I told him to follow the directions exactly :P I think he tried to flash a custom rom and forgot to wipe first, he says he didnt do anything but root, but I find it hard to believe considering how F-ed it is right now....when it boots into android as soon as it gets the V08 voicemail error it freezes and restarts..crazy.
