Root Evo 4G LTE root questions

Hello everyone,

Im really new to rooting so please forgive my ignorance. I have a few questions about doing this to my Evo 4G LTE.

First, I've had my phone for almost a year and i have a bunch of apps and obviously downloaded the most recent OTA which is 4.1.1 im wondering if i would be able to root and keep this version. or if not would i be able to get it back, as well as keep all of my apps and info.

Second, one of the the main reasons i want to root is to connect my PS3 controller to my phone in order to play some Emus i have. if i do this would i still be able to use that same controller with my ps3, sadly i only have 2 controllers and would not want to be down to just the one. the reason i ask is because i read that to pair the device with the ps3 controller you had to change the Bluetooth id on the controller, again i dont know much about all of this so if that is untrue then i apologize.

and advice or information would be greatly appreciated, thank you all and i hope to hear from you soon.

D.

welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

first off we have our own guide for rooting. here it is:
http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...g-dummies-guide-lazypanda-racun-unlocked.html

check it out and please read thoroughly before rooting it.

now as far as your questions go:

1. all an ota is is just a software update. so when you root your phone you can do one of two things, you can flash the su (superuser) that gives you root permission or you can flash a custom rom. there are plenty of custom roms out now that have the latest ota cooked in. all you need to do is flash it.

and if you plan on rooting you should never accept an ota. ota's usually will close any exploits that was used to gain root. and usually you will have to wait until the devs find another exploit. fortunately they just did so that now you can root (s-off) the latest ota........read the guide it will cover more of this in more details.

2. not sure on what bluetooth stack that the evo 4g lte needs in order to work with your controller. in the past with the og evo it was a certain custom rom called cm7, so my guess will be you will need to flash cm10 in order for it to work. i could be wrong though. i have not seen it being talked about much.

please feel free to ask any questions that you have. also hit up the stickies at the top of this forum for more info about the root world. hope this helps.

Thanks a lot for the info guys. It really has helped. I guess the next step is to dive in and do some reading. Thanks again. If I have any other questions I'll be sure to ask.

Okay so after doing the reading i found out that i will not be able to use this method because i have a mac. Its a bummer but no big deal. Now i have read that it can be done on a mac but i dont know how to do that, also can it be done if im running
3.15.651.16 710RD? i havent seen a root method for this version, or maybe i have and i misunderstood it. but so far i read that if i have a version over 1.21XXXX or something, then it will not work. Is there any info you guys could give me to help with this? Thanks in advance.

the root method goes by hboots and not software versions.....but yes since 3.15 is tied with hboot 2.09, you can root your phone. i fortunately do not have a mac, so i can't help you there.....sorry:(

can't you do a live cd of ubuntu on a mac?

No, you can't, the hardware i/o maps differently and the Unlimited software won't work.

Can still get full root with recovery easily using my Mac rooting guide linked in the sticky here.
