I believe you can root and set the phone up to roam on Verizon. I remember seeing a post on xda about it. Let me do some digging.

There is an app in the market that does basically the same thing..
Open it up, and choose to roam only, or open it up and choose sprint only/automatic.
Roam Control by Mr. Gregg
its a couple bucks but well worth it.
Your prl is going to limit download speeds, so its going to be slow as crap.
But expirimenting with a few different prls can possible solve that problem.
If you are interested, i can help you out more with it. Just let me know what you are trying to accomplish and ill get you set up

Thanks everyone. Just afraid of bricking a $500 phone. Really love the phone and want to keep to use with another carrier. Just got to pick the right carrier with good service in Southern USA!!
Have a samsung stunt with cricket right now (checking out their coverage, etc...) and the darn thing has stopped working, we are traveling around Southern USA and did not dail *228 when we left home, now no service and NO stores around us for miles and miles!!!! Anyone got any ideas on that one?? Thanks and will let you know how I do on the rooting of my EVO!!

Unfortunately, i havent seen a way to actually put this phone on verizon yet. That would be a good carrier if you are looking for service, but more expensive.
The roam control app that i mentioned would help, but you would have to have the phone on sprint or possibly cricket. I dont know much about that though.
I know there is a way to get it on metro pcs, and i think boost as well, but im not sure how well their signal will be where you are.
