Hello Everyone, Newbie here...

I bought an evo 4g which was going to be for my dad, and it turns out it's rooted and sprint can't activate it.

went to the boot screen and see the following:

I need to restore the phone to original factory settings, I really appreciate your help, I have no knowledge of rooting phones or anything like that. You help in making my dad a proud EVO 4G owner....

Thanks.

First, Welcome to AF!!! If you have S-ON the phone is not rooted. Perform a Factory Reset and all should be well.

@ Frenchie
Could have the previous owner pushed S-on and left and ASOP rom on the phone when he sold it.

I did perform that, but it still did not work, according to sprint the MEID number show's that it belongs to a "sanyo" phone. It's a sanyo software wishing it was an EVO.

Interesting....I would call Sprint and ask them what the bottom line is and what they suggest you do, the phone isn't rooted so you don't have to worry there.

I would go to the sticky on rooting for dummys and use unrevolked to reroot it once you are rooted and have a recovery you could flash a stock gingerbread or froyo rom and then sprint should be able to activate it,
Also once you get to this point you could also unroot with the stock rom and take it to sprint if needed.

interesting......i do not think that there any sanyo ports for the evo. i wonder what rom it is. hey op go to settings/about phone/software info/and under software number usually the devs will put the name of the rom there. what does it say?

I have the following information:3.70.651.1

also, I already called sprint, they told me that the phone was hacked, and that they do not have the equipment nor software to restore it to factory software, that I need to find a third party person that can do that for me, once original software is installed then I can activate the phone.

You should be able to root the phone with unrevolked as i atated above Just follow the instructions once rooted with a recovery just flash the stock sprint rom. You should be good to go and if you are not comfortable with it rooted u can always un root then.

do you have a custom recovery? go to the hboot and select recovery in the menu and see if you can.

and like mike said use http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html with unrevoked to get you rooted and then flash a stock rom.

To find out if you have a custom recovery, go to your H-Boot screen like you did before but this time select recovery and post what you see there.

You will either get a red exclamation mark and triangle (stock) or something you can actually use. Post what the recovery says at the bottom of the screen if you dont get the red triangle

Example: Build RA-supersonic

This information will tell us the required steps to give you to get this bad boy operating again

You should probably check things out yourself before you tell someone else to try them. You obviously haven't tested this because both of the file links in that post are dead.

Oops. Jaja. Sorry. Updated the post with the video with working links. :D

And I actually did test it (when it worked. :p)

op i would follow rxperts question first before trying anything else. main concern is that are you fully unrooted. there are two parts to getting unrooted. first step is getting s-on (which you have). the second step is getting stock recovery and stock rom installed onto the phone. easiest way to find out is to see if there is a custom recovery. when you got to the hboot screen on the menu there there should be an option for recovery. select that and report what you see. also check the bottom of the screen. it will tell you what recovery you have if any. if you get a red triangle with an exclamation mark then that is a stock recovery. let us know what you find.
