The last two phones that I actually kept beyond my upgrade date were the Samsung i500 and the Palm Centro. Two of the most solid Palm phones ever made and ones that had enough reliability and features to tide me over for quite a while.

I have to agree, I had a GSM Palm 650 (unlocked) that I used for more than 5 years before I switched to my current phone. And up to this date, it's still working. I really hope they still make phones like the good ol' days. :D

Have Evo and Epic. I like the physical keyboard and screen on the Epic much better, but unfortunately it's going back because of shitty GPS. Sure, cold fix workaround works for the cache not flushing, but overall accuracy is crap compared to the Evo. This was a dealkiller for me.

I'm switching to sprint soon but could be as late as feb. Right now i have narrowed it down to the epic and the evo. Which one of the two do you prefer? and what other phones comparable to these two are coming out by then?

You're asking the EVO board what we prefer? Isn't it obvious?

If you wait till after next year Sprint's 3rd gen android phones could be coming along so at that point, waiting a little longer would be prudent.

Both are VERY good phones. If you prefer a physical keyboard, then the Epic is for you. Personally, I don't like physical keyboards because they make the phones a little bulkier and the virtual keyboard on the Evo works great (and since I am not much of a typer it doesn't matter). As far as screens go the Epic uses a superamoled display, so the screen is a little more vibrant than the Evo's. However, that's only noticeable if they are side by side. The Evo's screen is great and it is larger than the Epic's. I prefer the Evo, but I like the Epic as well. My brother has it and he is very happy with it. In the end, it just comes down to which one you like better.

Oh yeah, another reason I prefer the Evo is because I really like the HTC SenseUI interface. I believe (though I can't say for certain) the Epic has Samsung's touchwiz interface. Both UI's are overlays to android's basic user interface. I like sense better, but some people don't.

There's a downside to waiting for the latest and greatest new phone to come down the pipe. That's a lesson I learned twice: Once with the Touch Pro and once with the Hero.

Both were part of the very first batches that were released to the public and both had problems which needed a few firmware update cycles to sort out. And there were no accessories available yet for either one when I got them. No screen savers or cases or holsters or charging docks ... Nada! And the first waves of those accessories to finally come down the pipe were hard to get and they sucked.

Yeah, it's nice to have the latest and greatest gizmos, but I already went that route twice and suffered frustration both times. And by the time those devices were finally working right and decent accessories were available for them there was a newer and better model out.

And the new model was suffering it's own growing pains and you couldn't buy accessories for it. :o

I heard it said once that we might be able to keep up with the Jonese's but trying to keep up with technology is a fool's game. I finally believe that and I've also learned to appreciate good enough, but I think that has as much to do with my age as the lessons I've learned. ;)

Im looking to going with sprint and I really wanna get an evo but on the epic forums they were saying that the epic is alot faster and more updated than the evo besides not having froyo. Is this true or are they just being fanboys?

spec for spec.. yes..
the epic does one-up on most power fronts.

but.. sometimes..
the whole is more than the sum of its parts.
Which i feel HTC has done..

My wife has the Epic and I have the Evo. Both are amazing devices that will blow away everything you've used before. You'll be happy with either. The specs on the Epic are better and the screen looks amazing. If you need a hardware keyboard, it's a no brainier. OTH, Samsung is historically slow with updates and froyo is still a month away, the GPS is still broken and the Samsung dev community is and probably will remain a mere shadow off its HTC equivalent. For me, the Evo feels better in the hand and seems a little better thought out. If you want to just throw your phone in your pocket and go, with a cheap case and screen protector, the Evo is easy. The Epic because of its slider design is a bit more complicated and feels like it might not fare well if carried in this manner long term. My wife would trade her keyboard for my kickstand in a heartbeat. Best advice, play with both and decide for yourself!

thanks im a go ahead and get the evo and my wife is goin to get the epic

I currently have the Epic, I have had it for almost 30 days, and I have quite enjoyed the phone. But, over the past couple of days I have seriously been considering switching to the Evo. I have already had to replace the Epic 8 days after first getting it, cuz the screen was getting too loose on top of the pull out keyboard. It was fine at first, then started doing that, that's why I returned it for a new one. This one has been fine since I got it, but the keyboard and screen have been having the same issue again. I realize that over time the keyboard and screen will have a little bit of movement when you tap on it, but not within a month. I have OCD, and the screen movement REALLY bothers me, and I am constantly having to check it to see how much the screen has starting moving as soon as I wake up. It has gradually gotten worse since I got it. I don't mind Touchwiz, or anything else about the phone. The SAMOLED screen is really nice, but I think that my decision to choose a phone just because of a screen and keyboard was stupid on my part. I love having a physical keyboard, because on my Hero I was always fat fingering the keys, and screwing up my spelling. I love swype on the EPic, but I know I can get it on the Evo too.

Another huge problem I have been having on the Epic is the fact that it will NOT register on my PC. I have all of the correct drivers installed, but nothing works, so I have not been able to root it. I know that I can root the Evo much easier, I rooted my Hero, the long way, so it shouldn't be too hard on the Evo for me. The fact that the Epic does not have Froyo bothers me as well. On my Hero I was stuck on 1.5 until I rooted it and put a 2.1 ROM on it, and even though Samsung has said Froyo will be out by the end of November, I don't think I want to chance spending this much on a phone, just to have to wait until next year to get Froyo. I generally like to get a new phone every 6-9 months, as I get bored after awhile, and with the Evo being less expensive, I don't think I would mind getting a new phone in 6-9 months considering I'll have paid MUCH less on the Evo than what I am currently supposed to pay on the Epic. The fact that the Epic also can not play flash videos is extremely frustrating as well, and the youtube app sucks. Every video is grainy and pixelated. Samsung may have their media hub, but I do not ever use it, despite people buying the Epic today being given a $50 credit for use in the media hub.

The kickstand is also a big pro for me as well, as I am getting tired of holding my phone to watch the DVD's I have put on my SD card. As far as battery life, I have heard that both phones suck in that regard, and my Epic is needing to be charged 2-3 times a day, as I am a constantly sending texts, emails, checking facebook, and using a handful of apps throughout the day to catch up on news, or whatever the app I'm using does. I enjoyed sense on my Hero, and kinda miss being able to scroll through all of my apps quickly, but that is not a huge deal for me.

I originally thought that the physical keyboard was awesome because I would have the whole screen to see while typing, unlike on the Evo, which when typing the screen is taken up by the on screen keyboard. That was something that bothered me on my Hero, but I think I'll have to get over it, because it really is not that huge of a deal.

The Epic does feel pretty light, but I do enjoy that the phone has rounded edges, and is not too huge in my pocket. The Evo does seem like it would be a huge bulge in my pocket, but that isn't really a breaking point for me either.

I have never had a samsung phone, but have read many horror stories about samsung abandoning a phone for their next big phone coming out. I realize that the galaxy s series probably wont have much of a problem in that area, but with the gps issues, hotspot speeds, and 4g connecting issues that have not been fully addressed, I think that the Evo has much more support than the Epic does currently. Because I rarely am able to get even 1 bar of 4g service, and I'm on the outskirts of our 4g area, but my buddy with his Evo gets a couple bars constantly that doesn't drop off after 30 seconds.

All in all, both phones have their pro's, and both phones have their con's. I think that it all comes down to personal preference, and what you will be using the phone for. I realize that my switch to the Evo may make me miss how crisp my video's and pictures are that I take, and that the screen may not be as good in the sun, but that is stuff I'm willing to compromise on for a more solidly built phone that I wont have to constantly check the keyboard to see how much wiggling room it has today. I have 2 days left on my 30 days, and I really hope that I do not regret me decision to switch to the Evo, but it does seem that the Evo has a bigger Dev base than the Epic does currently. Though, the Evo has also been out longer. We shall see how this all turns out!

So, im posting from my evo, and i am extremely happy that i made the change from the epic. It is slightly slower, but it is rare that there is any lag. It also feels more solid in my hand, its nice.

I would suggest researching from both this board and the Epic board. It's a matter of preferences and what features are important for you. Some like the Epic because of it's slight power advantage, a more efficient and vibrant screen, a slide-out keyboard etc. Some like the Evo because of it's far superior GPS tracking, HTC Sense UI, bigger screen, phone stand etc.

Learn what feature is more important for you and which you can sacrifice for another. If you know what you want, you would know which is phone for you.

What really bugs me about the EVO is it's horrible camera. The Epic's 5 megapixel camera blows the EVO's out of the water. I mean it's not even close. Another thing I've noticed is how redicoulosly bright pictures taken at night turn out because of Evo's double flash. It makes every pic look like there is some sort of ghostly white silhouette around the main object of focus. What really irks me about all of this is that the most basic quality assurance testing would have instantly picked this up. I think HTC's game is to slap a crappy camera lens with a high megapixel count on a camera and hope that nobody notices. I say this because before the EVO I had the HTC hero and though it was a "5 megapixel" camera it always took awful pictures. My buddies 3.2 MP blackberry bold took better pictures than my old hero.

In my opinion, these are the pros of both phones.

Epic
_____
Beautiful high resolution screen
amazing camera phone (evo's doesn't come close)
Swype (revolutionary way to type, currently only available on Samsung phones)

Evo
_____
Big screen. Once you get used to the size you really notice what a nice feature it is
No physical keyboard (I consider this a plus)
Heavy development work (If you're into installing custom roms and things like that then you have to go with HTC over Samsung)

So, if you are into taking beautiful pictures with your smartphone then get the Epic, you will be amazed. If that is not that important to you and you are ok with taking pictures that range from mediocre to good then look into the EVO. Maybe download a program like SlideIt which tries to duplicate what Swype does on the Samsung but isn't as intelligent.

Oh, another thing that may sway your decision is if you have a difficult time with spelling words correctly. If that's the case then a physical keyboard might work better for you.

after a week with it..... then let us know.. if it was a mistake or not.

FYI you can get Swype on Evo very easily, it just doesn't come stock.

:)

I had a version of Swype but it eventually stopped working. After a long period of use I started getting a message along the lines of "your trial period has ended...". I forgot what the exact message was. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling some other apk's of swype that I found on the web but couldn't get any of them to work. Let me know if you have a version of swype that works.

I signed up for the beta on their website and got an email with a link to the newest version of it. Hit up their website, I'm sure they'll take care of it.
