Evo in rugged enviroment

I use my Evo in the warehouse where I work. It's a very dusty and crowded environment. I'm always bumping into or rubbing against things while looking for material. I am currently using the Seidio Rugged Case and it works well but I am still nervous because I've wiped out 2 Blackberry Curves with Otterbox cases on them in the past. I have insurance on the Evo, but I find myself babying it. I'm curious about how others use and take care of their Evo in a rugged environment. If you broke your Evo in a rough environment, how you did it and if your current case is up to the task at hand. Thanks

i use the rugged and evo combo offshore inthe oilfield...im a blaster painter so im around all the elements including sand/paint/chemicals/saltwalter etc..and so far..so good..currently i live on a supply boat...and with 10 ft seas..i've dropped the evo numerous times on deck and still havent phased the case nor the phone. i use the holster that was included ..and my only gripe is that u need a 2 1/2 inch to 3 inch belt for it to not move around, but i just clip it to the inside of my pants and its all good..

pipe welder, naked evo, dont baby it at all, no problems yet though i'm sure i'll break it sometime, of course then i get another shiny one...

I have an active case on mine... thats all. I don't treat it like an newborn baby, and its dropped 4-5 times daily, if that says anything. Nothing aside from a knicks on the top edge above the speaker.

Cell tower and highrise electrician... no case on my evo. one broke, but that was a couple hundred feet. but otherwise, it works great. I also do new construction, so there is more dust than i probably should be breathing in. no problems.

auto technician and no case. been 3 months and so far so good. i just leave it in my pocket and lean over fenders, door sills and trunks. the evo is heavy enough i can feel how its sitting in my pocket and just pay attention. i use it with dirty hands all the time and just clean it off, oh i have the zagg shield on it.

my worst fear is lifting tires as i roll them onto my left thigh and then bumb up with my leg. i've been thinking of switching mu evo to my right pocket, but man that is hard as phones have been in my left for over a decade..lol

you might want to consider a leather case to keep it in if its getting rough. like a full zip one for a gps unit. like a travel case or something. tho that may suck to work with, but could be good for storing when not in use.

A good thick rubber case and a screen protector. That should cover it for just about anything except running it over in a truck or dropping it 20' or so. That's where the insurance comes into play. You pay $30+ for case, $10+ for screen protector, and $7-$10/mo for insurance so you don't have to worry.

Like the OP, I use the Seidio rugged case (got the combo pack, which covers all of my case needs). My job is contract industrial maintenance, so I see all types of nasty environments. My EVO is either in my shirt pocket or clipped to my belt or safety harness. The rugged case does a great job of protecting the phone, and the port covers keep the crud out of the ports. Can't use the kickstand in the rugged case, but since I'm at work that's not an issue. So far, no dings or scratches; even the screen protector (which I bought from Sprint the day I got my phone) is pretty much pristine after almost three months of use. I don't exactly baby my phone, but so far I've been lucky enough not to drop it (crosses fingers).

I am am hard on my phone, but I have only dropped it once. It was a 3 foot fall. The Innocase II cracked but the phone was fine. I just wish the Innocase was a little more durable. Also, while hiking, I got pumas rock in the pocket that I carry the phone in. The screen protector did its job and kept the scratches away from the screen.

I weld, sandblast, run overhead cranes and run a laser at times and have no issues yet! I feel like the EVO gave me OCD cause I'm constantly cleaning the thing lol.. its such a awesome fun :)

I work in a rough environment, when I first bought my phone I had it in a case, but i got tired of it. Now its bare minus a screen protector. It is perfectly fine, no problems at all.

Do you wear it on your hip using the supplied holster?

I stopped using the holster, and put the Seidio Rugged case into my pocket...with phone face pointing towards my leg.

If you must wear it outiside on your belt, perhaps a leather style carrying case would be approporate. It would at least provide another level of protection...

I am looking for such a thing myself, but so far, none of the stores make one LARGE enough for an Evo wearing a Seidio Rugged case.

I don't have much faith in the Seidio Rugged holster personally.

Hello All,

Thank you for your comments! We have just introduced a Rugged Holster for people that would like a Regular Belt Clip instead of an enlarged one. Here is a link to it:

Innocase Rugged Holster for use with HTC EVO 4G

This is designed for people who need a smaller belt clip to fit it on their non-utility or duty belts.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments!
