Help Evo Rebooting on its own

Thanks, I did not know how to find that.
The build number is 3.70.651.1

The place that I can "make" it reboot is about 7 miles North of a State border, and I was told by Sprint (with a previous phone" is where the phones swtich from one states towers to the other states towers. It is a "medium" coverage area (according to Sprint's maps) but not a "low" coverage area.

I dropped calls there before, but never more than that (with the old BB).

They're just babbling at you, imo.

GPS is part of the same chip that the CDMA transceiver's in - see step 13 at - HTC Evo 4G Teardown - Page 2 - iFixit

And those functions are being managed by your main processor, despite priority handoffs.

I'd recommend at least trying this - http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-support-troubleshooting/141369-how-fix-froyo.html

I could be wrong, but I'd say it's totally worth a shot. It's not unusual in our collective experience that a new phone still needs that - for all we know, they yanked it from the box and updated it before handing it to you.

are you using data at that area where it reboots your phone? i've come to the conclusion where my phone will reboot within 5 min whenever i access 3g data at my house, it won't do it with wifi so i use wifi when i can. what's weird is that it doesn't reboot when i'm using 3g at other areas. so i'm going to start trying using 3g and pay attention to reboot issues at areas other than my house from now on.

i just gave my phone to sprint to look at. apparently it will take two hours and if it is a hardware problem, which i'm pretty sure it is, they told me i have to contact htc and work everything out on my own. the sprint rep also told me that even if they say the hardware is the problem, htc has to do their own assesment of it and there's no garuntee that they'll replace it. and for doing all this they're charging me a 35 dollar fee. so essentially, i have to pay $35 dollars for them to tell me what i already know (that i have a broken phone), they hand it back to me and tell me good luck. verizon is looking nice right now :(

It's called "the finger-pointing game". Ma Bell perfected that decades ago, but the new telephone companies are learning quickly.

"It's the software."

"No, it's the firmware."

"No, no, it's the hardware."

Round and round it goes.

well sprint said that i have contradicting apps and that i'm trying to use the phone on the edge of the network area. so i did a reset on the phone and didn't download any additional apps. only what came on the phone. played a youtube video for 3min and it reset. did the gps fix and 5 minutes of youtube and it reset.

Thanks tracerit,
I am using only the Google Maps Nav (and whatever data it uses, and that would be 3G?) and the phone. If I talk on the phone (only) in the same place, it does not (yet) reboot.

so my phone will be sent off to htc today. they told me that they don't do replacements, only repairs. i can't imagine that. i'm really hoping to get a whole new (or refurbished) unit.

I will say since the update a few days ago, I havent experienced any reboots, and I was averaging 3-5 reboots daily! so far its good, wish me luck.. Rebooting phone is a pain and had me very frustrated. Im on my 7th EVO because sprint gives you refurbed phones.. but if its a multiple device, the multiple devices department can give you a brand new one.. I think normally after 4 or 5

Can I take the update if I am rooted?

Can I take the update if I am rooted?

You can do the update, just don't do the OTA update.

Check the rom list at our root subforum, thread = Rooting for Dummies + Extras. There's also a nice Sprint-lovers stock rooted rom linked in my post on page 13 or so - around post 613 or so.

Do not update your HBOOT, so don't go for the whole package - just the rom and radios should do. Ask in that thread if any questions, but the radio links are in the main XDA rom link in post #1 of that thread.

I will check thanks, first I need to do the reset to default fix because I am rebooting like crazy...

so instead of going through htc and waiting weeks for my phone to come back, i decided to give sprint a shot.

Day 1: i go in wait about 10 minutes, tell the customer rep what was going on. she said that they were particularly busy that day and it would be two hours to check out my phone. i come back two hours later and i was told that it was a software problem not a hardware problem. the tech said that i have numerous conflicting apps (messaging and handcent, stock browser and dolphin, market place and uninstaller pro). he says that he could never get the phone to reboot. he also told me that this confuses my phone and that that is the reason for the restarts. i know this to be wrong but go home.

while at home i do a full factory reset and left nothing on the phone but the apps that came on the phone. i get on youtube. 3 min in....reboot loop.

day 3: i go in. wait about 15 minutes. talk to a rep. this time the wait is only an hour. i leave my phone, go have lunch and come back. once again the tech explains to me that it is a software problem. he also said that he watched 9 minutes of video on youtube and couldn't get the phone to restart. he explains that after my factory reset i did not install 2 software updates and that these updates should fix the problem. he installed them for me and i left, obviously unsatisfied.

i get onto youtube, find a video, start it, and begin my drive home. after about 5 minutes the phone reboots again.

tomorrow i plan on going in and telling them that i'm leaving with a new phone or without a contract. this is crazy. i'm tired of the finger pointing and lack of responsibility. i'm asking for them to do this out of the manufacturer's warranty as well! not even the sprint insurance. this is no skin off of thier back!!! they actually gain money out of the deal with the $35 dollar restocking fee.

i love the evo to death when it's working. i honestly think it's THE best phone out there and after the HTC new sense update i think it will be the best. but if i can't even get on the internet for more than 10 minutes, or youtube for more than 5 without it restarting, then verizon will be getting a new customer.

The Evo's a great phone - but it's just a thing and sometimes when they make things they make lemons.

Absolutely good on you to demand your consumer rights. Keep on them. I think I speak for many here, we're pulling for you.

I just remembered - once upon a time, we used to have a number of Sprint store managers and reps posting on here, being Evo lovers themselves. I vaguely recall them detailing some differences or something between corporate or franchised stores - I just can't recall.

My point is - maybe search and if unsuccessful, ask in this forum if there are any Sprint folks - or other customers - that can give advice:

Sprint - Android Forums

I'm not suggesting this is an adult puzzle or that you're doing anything wrong whatsoever.

I am, however, wondering if it's a true or false memory that there's advice to be had on the words to use so you're not lumped in with the crooked types with perfectly good phones looking for a freebie.

What I'm saying is - we've all had those products that never hurt for the doctor (I'm thinking of one of my cars!) - but in your case, how is that possible?

Maybe they didn't really look at it, thinking you're just "one of those" - and that's not ok.

In any service organization, there's always escalation. My experience when the reps and the stores couldn't get it together for me, was to use Sprint's web form and web-mail them my complaint. I and others taking this advice find that being clear, simple, to the point - X, Y, Z and no one is really helping me and I need immediate attention because in effect, I have no phone - that - will tend to get you 2 things.

1. A tracking number, with total accountability, in writing of the problem. Corporate cannot ignore that.

2. That typically gets you to Tier 3 Support - those are the overworked guys that make decisions and get the tough jobs handled. Those guys have solved for me in a few hours - literally - what 8 days of calling and store visits couldn't.

Final advice if you're interested:
* remember to put your email and cell phone number inside the web message, account number if you have it, and alternate (working) phone number if you have one
* don't threaten leaving or anything about contracts - that's not their department, they'll move on and prolly write you off as lost because of someone else's mess - remember - they're overworked at tier 3, I don't know how to explain it, but you must have those people where you work - the ones that get it done
* stress this one simple point - I have no phone service because my phone won't work right, no one I've tried to work with is understanding that fact, can anyone help me? I am available anytime except xx-xx o'clock for anyone willing to please help me.

I know they have US offices, and I'm not sure, but I think they have overseas offices - so - maybe not a bad idea to even drop that letter tonight if you're so inclined.

Stores are supposed to help - but they make money moving iron, replacements cuts into stock (just my opinions). Not my opinion: I know that tier 3 support does not like hearing about people with no phone service.

Anyway, maybe that, or the Sprint forum, or something - many good lucks, again, keep us posted.

day 5: went in complained, and their first reaction right out the gate was to get me a new phone. so i got a new, or refurbished i'm not sure, phone. still hardware 0003 which makes me nervous but so far so good :)

It is definitely an overheating problem. On a 23 hour ride from Cali to Texas My phone rebooted 7 times. I checked battery temp and it was around 108 by the time it started up again. I will be letting the HTC engineers know about this on Monday

It is not tied to the hardware version, there are many 0003's that have no problems at all, mine for one. Maybe this will be your lucky number.

Hey guys, just got on here for the first time to figure out why my EVO is rebooting itself. Obviously it's not just me. A few things to contribute my two cents here:
1. I DO have the data update checked, I use an extended battery so the drain isn't such an issue for me.
2. I have not used Google Nav, Goggles or Pandora. Don't currently have Pandora.
3. I do have facebook synced, but I don't use the HTC facebook widget.
4. I'm also getting the occassional "SMS Error/ other general problem" when trying to send texts from my home, where 3G is spotty.
5. My EVO is NOT rooted. (yet)

Honestly, the reboot is annoying, but not as much as all the SMS error messages. Then again, I haven't had a phone call interrupted by the reboot yet, it seems to happen when the phone is sitting and not in use.

(knock on wood) but...since the newest update(updated fresh's latest rom) im yet to have the reboot issue. its been about 3 weeks now since the update, and the phone would have rebooted by then.

ill update if it ends up rebooting again, but so far so good.

Welcome to the forums!

Have you tried http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-support-troubleshooting/141369-how-fix-froyo.html

And also - recommend checking the phone temperature from time to time - a good app that shows all sorts of things including that would be System Panel Lite, free in the Market.

SMS is strictly a 2G service - you should be able to send those with 3G off - if you're able to phone, you ought be able to sms.

Ok guys, I have found a way to make it stop. This is not a troll, just put your phone in the freezer. If it is rebooting over and over, it will finish the current reboot and not reboot again. This isn't a permanent solution, but it does make it stop so you can use it right now.

for those asking why I even did this:
I was thinking of things that could be causing this and I was like hey what if something in it is getting too hot so it shuts off. It had just turned off so then I put it in the freezer and stood out side the freezer waiting for the sound it plays when it turns on. I stood there for a few minutes and it only made it once! If I leave it in there for about 30 seconds it will reboot pretty soon, but if I leave it in there for a few minutes it will not reboot anymore that day!
It is possible it is a fluke and that every time I have tried this my phone was on the last reboot already. Try this and see what you get. Your results my vary.

Sounds like you have a heat-compromised device that partially heals from the forced contraction of the damaged / compromised materials.

Makes sense, actually.

I agree with your solution. In the early days mine would only reboot when using the GPS and phone at the same time. Recently it has begun to reboot sometimes to the point of being useless and it is happening now without the GPS or using the phone. It often will reboot on a reboot. It also only happens while I am driving but I have had the heat blasting in my vehicle with the colder weather.

I have tried a similar test by just leaving the phone outside in the bed of my truck while at a scheduled stop, usually about 12 to 15 minutes and it works fine for another hour or so. I am convinced my problem is heat related also.

I guess its time for a replacement. I just hate the thought of going through another root process and restoration of apps and settings.

As a last ditch effort for a dead/dying hard drive it works...I've seen it, I've used it. However, I must caution anyone thinking of doing this to their phone even if only for a few seconds. Freezer= ice crystals= condensation= water damage! Those phones heat up FAST and there just isn't enough time for ANY moisture to dissipate before causing damage.

<forehead slap>rangergrrl is absolutely correct.

(and it's an urban myth that LCDs are liquid and therefore freeze and crack)

So - going from theory to practical - yep, a lot of concern for freezing the whole device.

A main component subject to heat damage is the battery. Might try replacing that first.
