Help Evo Rebooting on its own

there is another thread running about the phone flat turning off and its relation to a loose battery, possiblity of an issue with that?
maybe the battery disconnects temporarily then reconnects causing a reboot instead of just a turn off.

This problem seems to have something to do with signal strength and/or cell data use.

This is exactly what is causing the reboots people. When your phone is in weak coverage area it attempts to pull in a better signal resulting in a much higher battery draw. In turn the battery and phone temperature increases eventually resulting in a reboot. It's a built in safety feature. The reboots are from phone/battery temperature threshold being met.

I have done test after test and narrowed it down to phone temperature in which that was due to the phone constantly trying to pull in a signal in a weak coverage situation such as inside home, buildings etc.

Using gps, web browsing, and streaming online videos during a low signal situation wil make your phone/battery get warm and reboot. I don't see an easy fix for this but it is a built in safety switch so to speak. Cooling down the phone and battery will stop the rebooting until the temperature reaches its threshold again.

The phone is working properly but i agree this is very annoying. Solution? Limit your data, gps, usage when in low signal areas and keep the phone as cool as possible.

Try testing your EVO's with this info in mind and report your results.

Compare the batteries and report back, please.

I'll see her in few days and will compare batteries.

I'm with tx_dbs_tx, I think it is overheating batteries. She began using a new heavier and more snug case around the same time which would diffuse heat less, probably causing the phone to heat up quicker I however have the same case and no rebooting, making me think there could be different batteries going around out there. I also live in an area with good signal strength and she is in a very poor signal area.

Is there anyone having the reboot problem who is using an aftermarket battery?? It seems like everyone with this problem is on a stock battery, maybe?

I am on stock battery and I get reboots when my phone heats up. It's possible that the stock battery is the cause of this BUT I truly believe the reboots are triggered by the heat build up which in turn is caused by the phone working harder to pull in a signal in weak coverage situations. Heat is the trigger from all my tests.

When doing your tests please do it in good signal areas then test again in poor signal areas and compare. Do heavy data usage during these tests and you will see that a weak signal will cause the EVO to generate more heat. This leads to the rebooting and will stop as soon as you cool the phone down with ac vent etc. Watch and see.

The theory makes sense but my experience doesn't completely add up. My phone does not get particularly warm when it reboots. In fact, during my experiment last night it did not heat up at all.

Also, I have only had this rebooting problem for the past three weeks or so. I got my phone on launch day and never had a problem with rebooting until after the latest update. I put quite a bit of stress on it over the months as far as data is concerned. I house sat for a friend (who had no internet access) and used my phone with wireless tethering and 2 bars of service for an entire weekend. The phone got quite warm but never rebooted. That was back in July.

Something changed between then and now. It is ridiculous to conclude that the phone is working properly. In the real world, signal strength is rarely ideal and when I need my phone most, like when I'm using the GPS navigation in an unknown area, it is not acceptable to have it turning itself off.

my friends finally went into the white screen of death, as she called it.
sprint has taken it back and will get her a replacement....

What a @#$@#@ing joke. I sent my phone off to HTC on Thursday the 14th. They received it on Saturday the 16th. I get it back today supposedly fixed. So I go and get it activated and with in an hour the new fixed phone does the same reboot crap GRRRR. So I called them an they want me to send the phone back again. HTC needs to get it together My phone isn't not fixed

You and I have the same issue.... I have pinpointed it to the interaction of GPS with the Mobile Network. As I stated it seems both GPS and mobile networks needs to be on for Google Maps and Sprint Navigation to work properly, if activate the Navigate I get the instant reboot with in usually 5 minutes to, times vary. I have also tested without the mobile network, GPS on, and no issue. Last, but not least, if I shut off the GPS, I seem to have the same issue with rebooting if and only if I have the Mobile Networks checked on. I could be using the phone with no issue and then all of a sudden it goes into reboot mode. If I can get into the settings and uncheck Mobile Networks, it quits rebooting, sometimes I can't get it to do it and have to pull the battery.

This is where I go:
Menu>Settings>Wireless & networks and then uncheck mobile networks.

I can shut mobile networks off and use my wi-fi at home with absolutely no issue.

Now, for the last note, I heard back from HTC today and was asked if anyone contacted me about replacing my phone, to which I responded no, not yet. He informed me that they have enough phones and have pinpointed the issue and will be sending an update OTA. I first misunderstood him and he repeated that an OTA would be sent and it was a prioirty. I then said to him, so it is a software issue and he confirmed that it seems to be the interaction between the GPS and Mobile Networks and how the phone handles it, he compared it to a computer shutting down when too many things are running at once (thing is, I could get it to happen after a fresh wipe to factory too). Unfortunately I did not confirm if it was the HTS software or Froyo, but just happy that enough of us called and complained that finally we may have the fix. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

If you have this issue... PLEASE continue to call, we need this OTA fast!!!

YES.. this is the exact issue i was having. I did a lot of testing to verify this. I hard reset my phone, then tested over and over. The phone only reboots when you use GPS in conjunction with cellular data (3g) I got reboots usually every 5 minutes when using an app that utilizes both features. I downloaded a gps app that does not require mobile data and i can run that without fail. I called HTC they said it was a known issue. Then called sprint and they agreed. I picked up my replacement phone yesterday. So far no problems with rebooting. If you are having problems with GPS apps, please try disabling your mobile data option to test.

I noticed the excessive rebooting after the flash update, now wheneverim on a site that's flash heavy I can count down from 10 seconds after the page is loaded to when it will reboot, once I watched it reboot 4 times over and over again. Sprint sent a replacement and for the first time today it reboots on me.

I noticed the rebooting issue started after updating the google Voice search and installing Vlingo with the InCar feature.

Since I use a bluetooth earpiece while in my car, the phone reboots everytime I disconnect it from the car cradle and turn the bluetooth off.

I have an update regarding my issue. I took my phone to a Sprint store that had a tech and explained my issue. She said they had not seen this issue before and that I would have to do a hard reset at the store so they could log it in their system that it was done. I told her I did not want to do it then because I had not backed everything up. I left with nothing accomplished.

Fast forward two days to Wednesday. My phone went into a reboot loop like I have never seen before. I was driving and streaming audio from a website. The phone was NOT hot, just barely warm. It rebooted and didn't stop rebooting, even after removing the battery. It would get to the unlock screen and after 2-5 seconds it would reboot again. I wanted to take the phone into the Sprint store and show them first hand. I was on the clock and on my way to a customers house so I just let it keep rebooting. It continued for the hour and a half or so that it took me to finish up and head to the same Sprint store I was at a couple days earlier. It probably rebooted 30 times or more.

When I walked in and showed them what was going on they immediately ordered me a new phone. I received the phone yesterday and I have not been able to make it reboot. So for now my issue is fixed. The new phone also boots significantly faster (1 minute vs 5).

I just did a hard reset on my old phone and while I cannot test for the reboot problem since I've already activated the new phone and have no data connection I can say that it still boots super slow. Something definitely isn't right with it. I can also note that my old phone is hardware version 2 and the new one is version 3.

i had this issue on my phone...would reboot here and there. started to do it more often as of late. my phone is rooted, so i reflashed some roms...did a ton of troubleshooting, then ended up just unrooting and going to a stock rom for a few days to see if it would fix the issue. was good for about 4 days...then rebooted itself again.

i ended up getting a BRAND NEW replacement the other day....was good for a few days...and rebooted 3 times last night in the matter of minutes.

I am curious why this happens to some phones but not others.

I had a brief reboot problem, but that was due to one particular app. And none of the people I know or have talked to with Evo's are having the problem.

I am curious why this happens to some phones but not others.

Without more specifics posted here we have no way of determining that. Anecdotal evidence that the phone reboots doesn't tell us why.

If people would be so kind as to post their hardware version number and the particulars of their firmware and other notable features we might be able to narrow down which phones reboot and which ones don't. I'm sure Sprint has a handle on this, but I'm even more sure that they aint talking about it.

it was happening to both evo's ive had so far. first phone was hardware version 002...the new one is 003 and still having the rebooting issue. Just got the new phone last week.

happened when rooted and not rooted. happened on a stock rom not rooted and also rooted with both fresh and damage roms.

ive had the issue with minimal apps installed. tried hard resets, different roms, clearing cache and dalvik.

so at this point i honestly have no clue. i did start getting errors about the SD card saying that there may be errors and to scan it when plugging it into my pc, however the SD card would still work when ignored. i did have another SD card that came with the new phone, so i ended up swapping them and formatted the new one and transferred files over. Did this early this morning.

since then i haven't had it reboot...however there have been times where it doesn't'reboot for a few days.

I'll report back towards the end of the week if it doesn't reboot itself....but obviously will report sooner if it reboots again.

Update: In my first post I stated that "heat" was the trigger of my reboots due to the phone being in a weak coverage area and working harder to pull in a signal. Well since my last post I have consistently gotten reboots when using the stock web browser on flash web sites. Streaming videos from aetv.com, fancast.com, etc while my phone has a very weak signal will make my EVO reboot. I have found that my phone or battery was NOT warm or hot when the reboots occurred. Yes sometimes I have some heat buildup and it reboots when I'm on a flash heavy website streaming videos. BUT I have had reboots without any heat from the phone or battery also. Therefore heat is NOT the cause of the reboots.

Another thing, I never have GPS turned on and I get the reboots. My EVO has rebooted only when using the web browser and streaming videos while having a weak signal. My hardware version is 0003. Stock rom 2.2. no GPS running while using the data because my GPS stays turned off. GPS is not the cause of my reboots. I feel its either weak signal or Adobe Flash because these two thing are always in the equation with the rebooting... at least with my phone.

anyone seen this yet;

mine will usually reboot when its not hot at all.

one time it rebooted was just when i got an email......i got an email, and as soon as i clicked on the gmail icon, the phone rebooted.

basically it will reboot when i click on random app icons.

since i swapped and formatted SD cards yesterday morning, them phone is yet to reboot...but as i mentioned before...ive gone days without a reboot, but it would eventually do it.

ill continue to update throughout the week.

I can also note that my old phone is hardware version 2 and the new one is version 3.

I have version 3 and also having the same problem. I bought the phone on launch day and never had such a problem until 3 weeks ago. And yes, it mostly happens when the phone gets hot. I have an application from the market now to monitor the battery temp and mostly when it goes past 108 degrees, it reboots because I have not seen it past that temp before. I have done everything, including soft reset, hard reset 3 times already, formatted the sd card and now ready to throw in the towel and go to a sprint store.

It is really annoying.
