Root EVO Root problems on both Windows and MAC

Ok I have tried both the guides for Windows and for Mac and still have the same problem. I download all the necessary files, unzip the SDK and I plug in my Evo and set it to charge. Neither my Windows 7 or MacBook Pro can decipher the "adb" command. On the Windows computer I ran the terminal as an Administrator. On the Mac I have even used the "sudo" command. On the Mac I have also updated the bash profile and added the sdk/tools folder to the path. I also changed the environment variable on the Windows machine for the same. Neither can recognize the "adb" command. Can anyone help? I really want to root this phone to get the setcpu app for the battery life.

Why don't you just use unrevoked? It will save you boatloads of time. Check out the rooting for dummies sticky.

he may have the new hboot

I would suggest reading around over on xda for more detailed info on rooting by the method you are trying

if you don't have the new hboot, stop making things more difficult and just use unrevoked :P
