Root EVO rooted, but can't flash ROM

BMDenver

Newbie
So, I've had my EVO rooted (Unrevoked) for a while, happily running Wireless Tether and other apps. I've never been too interested in installing a new ROM, since they all seemed to be missing little things I wanted.

But now Gingerbread is out, and I'm still running Froyo. I avoided the OTA update, and waited for a Gingerbread-for-root version. Now that it's out, I tried to install, but it's not working. I'm worried I'm in a little over my head.

Using ROM Manager, I flashed ClockworkMod recovery. It says I have ClockworkMod Recovery 3.0.0.5.

The instructions I read said the next step was to use ROM Manager to Backup Current ROM. The instructions say to just let it do it's thing, but when I click Backup Current ROM, it just reboots into recovery, and waits for me to input something. I click "reboot", but it just reboots like normal. I checked the files on the SD card, and there is no backup there. Once I decided this wasn't working correctly, I was reluctant to go any further and risk screwing it up.

Basically, the instructions seem really straightforward, but the phone isn't doing what the instructions say it should do. If I'm already screwing up the backup part, I really don't want to skip to the new ROM part.

HBOOT 2.10.0001
what other software info is important?

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I've looked at a lot of threads, but can't find anyone describing this issue.

rom mananger tends to be very buggy. i would recommend that you do everything manually. through your recovery.

1.so go to the rom/kernel sticky and grab the odexed 4.24 ota rom and download it. 2.transfer it to your sd card.
3.go to recovery (power off then press and hold power+vol down)
4.select backup and restore and then backup to make a nandroid backup
5.wipe dalvik cache(found in advanced), wipe cache partitions
6.select "install zip from sd card" and then find your file and select it
7.reboot and be patient as the first boot may take a bit longer then normal as dalvik cache needs to be built up.
and now you have the new ota!!!!!
hope that helps.

Not sure how to do a screenshot of this screen. So, I'll just type it:

yeah you can't screen shot that.
ok so no recovery. lets get you a new one:
1.download this file:PC36IMG_RA_2.3.zip. this is amon ra2.3. a much better then recovery. if you want clockwork mod then you can get it here;http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/259446-clockwork-amon-ra-pc36img-files.html
2.rename the file by erasing the "_RA_2.3" part of the name so that it is PC36IMG. just add no .zip to the name.
3.move the file to the root of the sd card(no folder)
4.go into hboot again(power+vol down)
5.hboot will automatically scan for the file, select yes to update.
6.select no to not reboot. you want to stay in recovery and make a nandroid backup.
7 select restore and backup and make a nandroid backup
now you can reboot and you are good to go.

ok, let's try this:
